Is this normal? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Many people who come to therapy don&#8217;t know what the problem is. <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">They just know that despite their best efforts, they feel a lingering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">anxiety<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>And a majority of these cases of ongoing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-walking-depression.htm\">mild depression<\/a> are linked to one or several of the following.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. You are ignoring your own values.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We each have a personal set of things that truly matter to us, our \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values<\/a>\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">If we go against these inner drives, because we want to be like our colleagues and friends, or because we feel we have to live up to the values of our parents instead? If we chase a life of stability when we believe in adventure, or of life in the public eye when we value privacy? It\u2019s like going against a current. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We feel more and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">more exhausted<\/a> and less and less ourselves. <\/strong>Not surprising, when we are betraying ourselves on a daily basis. In fact ignoring personal values is behind many a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">midlife crisis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-nervous-breakdown.htm\">nervous breakdown<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. It&#8217;s not about how perfect our partner seems. It is about how many people <\/strong><em>we are actually connecting with. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">Connection<\/a> means we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">able to be ourselves<\/a> around others, and to allow others to be themselves around us. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">Having friends and even a big family does not protect you from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\">feeling lonely<\/a>, if nobody actually sees and accepts the real you. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. You have past trauma that is surfacing.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Do you have a funny feeling that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">childhood experience<\/a> might have been worse than you have let yourself consider?<\/strong> Or is there a part of your childhood that has always been a bit hazy?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-memories-are-they-real.htm\">repressed memories<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-repressed-emotions.htm\">repressed emotions<\/a> are triggered, we can suddenly feel bad all the time. Your emotions will be unreasonable, you may start behaving oddly. You can even have\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">strange dreams or waking visuals.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It doesn\u2019t have to be something big that triggers <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>. Sometimes it\u2019s as simple as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-deal-with-difficult-boss.htm\">your boss yelling at you<\/a>, or a partner telling you they love you for the first time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Maybe you even had<\/strong> parents who never <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-effects-of-divorce-on-children.htm\">divorced<\/a>, a nice house, all the trappings of a \u2018happy family\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Except behind closed doors one or both of your parents were unable to give you the love and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-acceptance-and-commitment-therapy.htm\">unconditional acceptance<\/a> a child needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">We require a caregiver who not only takes care of us in practical ways, but whom we can rely on to be there for us when we need them emotionally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Without that, we end up<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">anxious<\/a> adults with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-styles.htm\">attachment issues<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\">\u00a0low self-esteem.<\/a>\u00a0Life never feels safe or certain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. You were never taught how to be happy. <\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">Many of us are not only not taught how to be content, we are carefully and methodically taught how to be miserable! <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This can take the form of parents with very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative beliefs<\/a> about others and the world. In their efforts to teach you to \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">stay safe<\/a>\u2019, they actually teach you to expect the worse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Or perhaps you grew up in a community or culture that was sadly <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/live-life-like-victim-12-ways-tell.htm\">victimised<\/a><strong>. <\/strong>This can mean that as an adult, you still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/victim-mentality.htm\">always feel a victim<\/a>. And who can feel happy if they feel the world is against them?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For some of us there was a sibling, parent, family member or even teacher that <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\">constantly criticised<\/a>\u00a0us. Their voice becomes your own inner voice, so that even surrounded by good things you tell yourself you don\u2019t deserve it. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What if I was just born this way? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Is it possible there is just \u2018something wrong with you\u2019? That you are destined, so to speak, to never feel happy, no matter how good life gets? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We\u2019d recommend you take a look at the above points above first.
