In the days leading up to your period you feel totally out of control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Think of it like PMT on overdrive. If PMT is like a storm passing, PMDD is like a tsunami. And it can certainly feel that way, as it tends to <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">wreck your relationships<\/a> <\/span>and life each month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">PMDD vs PMT<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">PMDD is different than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety or depression<\/a> because <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">it happens at around the same time each month (before your period). When you start menstruating, your symptoms stop and you feel yourself again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And it\u2019s not just PMT, which just makes you<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-be-less-sensitive.htm\">more sensitive<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spending-time-alone.htm\">moody<\/a> but means you can carry on as usual. PMDD really affects your life. You snap out of it to find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leaving-a-relationship.htm\">you\u2019ve ruined a relationship<\/a>, skipped a day of work, missed something important. You can start to feel like Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, spending half the month cleaning up for the other half when you are out of control.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But my doctor said I just have PMT and depression <\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_100304\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14678932979_9ca6074b05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100304\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-100304\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14678932979_9ca6074b05-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"what is pmdd\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14678932979_9ca6074b05-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14678932979_9ca6074b05.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14678932979_9ca6074b05-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-100304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/hnt6581\/14678932979\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">hnt6581<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Post menstrual dysphoric disorder is a recognised diagnosis in America. <\/strong>It\u00a0is now even found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-dsm.htm\">the DSM-5<\/a>, the diagnostic manual all mental health practitioners in the USA use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Unfortunately, here in the United Kingdom, it\u2019s not yet an official diagnosis.<\/strong> Some doctors might not be as willing to take you seriously. It can be helpful to track your moods for several months, so your doctor can see that the moment you begin menstruating you go back to normal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Even in America, where PMDD is diagnosed, it is still often seen as an<\/strong> endocrine disorder.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is helpful as it recognises it\u2019s a hormone-related condition, but undermines how very serious this condition is when it comes to moods. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">At its very worse, cases of PMDD have been found to lead to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\">suicidal thinking<\/a><\/span> and even psychosis, complete with <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/flashback-vs-hallucination-vs-delusion.htm\">hallucinations<\/a><\/span>. So it is time that doctors take it seriously. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Symptoms of PMDD<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Emotional and mental symptoms<\/strong> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">mood swings and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">overreacting <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">depression <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">listlessness and not wanting to do your usual activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">wanting to be alone <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">bouts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/deal-with-anger-management-techniques.htm\">rage<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\">crying <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling tense and edgy <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">picking fights with people <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\">suicidal thinking<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Physical symptoms<\/strong> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">PMT signs like breast tenderness and bloating <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">headaches <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">changes in appetite <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">fatigue<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">foggy thinking<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/generalised-anxiety-panic-disorder-help-guide.htm\">anxiety symptoms<\/a> &#8211; racing heart, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">sleeplessness<\/a>, sweating, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">tension<\/a>, stomach upset.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why do I have PMDD?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_100305\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/263019967_23f1975255.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100305\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-100305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/263019967_23f1975255-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"what is pmdd\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/263019967_23f1975255-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/263019967_23f1975255.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-100305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gnarlsmonkey\/263019967\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Surija \/ &#8220;Sray&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s not fully known what exact causes are. But it\u2019s thought to be<\/strong> a mix of genetics and possibly environment. So you can be born more sensitive to hormones, and perhaps a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">traumatic past event<\/a> then triggered your PMDD. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What treatment helps PMDD?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">There is controversial advice when it comes to PMDD, and it can be a case of trial and error until you find what works for you. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Talk therapy can help.<\/strong> It can be a great relief to talk to someone who doesn\u2019t judge you and understands. It can particularly help if there is any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">past trauma<\/a> in your life that might be making your PMDD worse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Some doctors will suggest anti-depressant medication, and\/or oral or injected contraception.<\/strong> Although it\u2019s not really proven that contraception does help with PMDD, with some women reporting that it made their PMDD worse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>At the very extreme end some women opt to<\/strong> have a hysterectomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-care-a-help-guide.htm\">Self care<\/a> is important.<\/strong> Track your periods, so you start to get an idea of when your worse days are and can be prepared, such as planning for early nights to get more rest.
