It&#8217;s that you find the words you need to explain what you are going through, so you can get <a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">the help you need to feel better<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Clinical depression<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Here in the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/clinical-depression\/overview\/\">the NHS uses<\/a><strong>\u00a0just one general diagnosis for all forms of depression<\/strong>, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">clinical depression<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor or mental health professional dealing with you will then rank your depression as either <em><strong>mild, moderate, or severe.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The general symptoms of depression include<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">low moods<\/a>, taking less pleasure in things than usual, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">feeling without energy<\/a>. Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness, depression<\/a> is persistent and lasts for several weeks, months, or, yes, years. This can include your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">work life<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/family-gathering-tips.htm\">family life<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">social life<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">physical health<\/a>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">troubles with sleep<\/a>. You might have occasional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\">thoughts that life isn\u2019t worth living<\/a>. Those close to you see the difference.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Severe depression <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Severe depression means that your moods are negatively affected each and every day.<\/strong> You are no longer able to keep up with life. Others around you are able to tell that you are struggling. You often have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\">suicidal thinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some people with severe depression have<\/strong> <strong>psychotic episodes, but that is not a requirement to<\/strong> be diagnosed as &#8216;severe&#8217;. Nobody seems to realise how much you secretly suffer. Read our article on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-walking-depression.htm\">Walking Depression<\/a>&#8221; for more.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Major depressive disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>This is an American diagnosis from <\/strong>their mental health &#8216;bible&#8217;, the\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-dsm.htm\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM)<\/a>. Major depressive disorder equates with a diagnosis of severe clinical depression in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the DSM most UK practitioners refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/cg90\">depression guidelines of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)<\/a>. Nice guidelines do take into account DSM recommendations, but also those of the World Health Organisation (WHO) who put out a diagnostic manual called<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-icd-10.htm\"> the &#8220;ICD-10&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Dysthymia <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Both major diagnostic guides, the DSM-IV and ICD-10, use this category to describe very mild depression that goes on for a long time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">You might not have quite enough symptoms to qualify for a depression diagnosis, or you just qualify for mild depression. Either way, you have low moods for so long that doctors recognise it&#8217;s a real problem. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this way dysthymia could be seen as the &#8216;official&#8217; term for &#8216;walking depression&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That said, dysthymia is not a recommended term here in the UK.<\/strong> The NICE guidelines suggest there isn&#8217;t enough research to show that it is any different than mild depression expect that it it lasts longer. <strong>So here in the UK it would instead be called &#8216; &#8216;persistent sub threshold depressive symptoms&#8217;.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Seasonal affective disorder<\/h2>\n<p>There are actually<strong> two forms of seasonal depression<\/strong>\u00a0to know about, even if only one gets the attention.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Seasonal affective disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/cg90\">Do your moods plummet at the same time each year? Namely, the onset of fall and winter when the days get shorter and there is less sun?<\/a> Do you then feel better when spring comes? You might want to look into a diagnosis of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/seasonal-affective-disorder.htm\"> seasonal affective disorder, or &#8216;SAD&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Reverse seasonal affective disorder\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>About ten per cent of those with seasonal depression actually find it&#8217;s the sun and long days that depress them.<\/strong> If you you have found yourself depressed when summer hits for two or more years, if you want to stay indoors and avoid the bright light? So when our hormones suddenly change, we are more susceptible to depression.<\/strong> This can include:<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Post-natal depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/postnatal-depression-symptoms-treatments.htm\">baby blues<\/a>&#8216; are one thing. And it&#8217;s actually common to feel a bit glum after birth. After all, your entire life and identity are being rearranged.<\/p>\n<p>But if you aren&#8217;t feeling yourself for six weeks or more, or if you start to experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/postnatal-depression-case-study.htm\">low moods a few weeks or months after birth<\/a>, then you might have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/postnatal-depression-symptoms-treatments.htm\">post-natal depression (PND).<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Pre-natal depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/body-image-pregnancy-birth.htm\">Pregnancy is often an emotional time<\/a>. But for some women, it&#8217;s more than just being sensitive and moody. They start to experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\">very dark thoughts<\/a> and feel unable to manage. While not an official diagnosis yet in the UK, it&#8217;s still important to talk to your GP if you think you might have this sort of depression, also referred to as &#8216;antenatal depression&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Pre-menstrual tension is one thing, and can see us moody. But some women are far more than just low or grumpy. Each month they have suicidal thoughts or rages that like clockwork stop when their period begins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previously seen as endocrine disorder,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-pmdd.htm\">premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)<\/a> is finally getting the attention it deserves as a mood disorder. Unfortunately, though, it&#8217;s only a official diagnosis at this point in America and not yet in the UK.<\/p>\n<h2>Other related diagnosis<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Bipolar disorder\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>This was at one point referred to as &#8216;manic depression&#8217;. But &#8216;bipolar&#8217; is a much more accurate description, because it&#8217;s not just about depression.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\">Bipolar disorder<\/a> involves periods of of mania, for some people more than periods of depression. Mania involves a state of buzzy, &#8216;high&#8217; energy that sees you lose touch with realistic and acceptable limits of behaviour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When manic you tend to do do things you later regret, such as<\/strong>\u00a0partying for days on end, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexual-partners-double-standard.htm\">casual sex<\/a> with the wrong person, a shopping spree that puts you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\"> in debt,<\/a> or getting others involved in a big idea you have to later admit is beyond you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Do any of these types of depression sound like you?
