It means<\/strong> the air is cleared in a way that doesn\u2019t leave you or the relationship damaged. Instead, things can be left at a better level than before.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Unfortunately, most of us tend to engage in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manipulative-behaviour-are-you-guilty.htm\">unhealthy and damaging behaviours<\/a> when we fight. Fighting can be cultural.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Not all cultures have the same view on \u2018fighting\u2019. What one culture might view as a terrible fight might be<\/strong> not a big deal to someone from another, more passionate culture.<\/p>\n<p><em>An English family, for example, might watch a scene in an Italian movie of a family shouting and screaming with a lot of aggressive gestures. It might seem a terrifying fight for them. Should they turn on the subtitles it might turn out that it\u2019s a fight about politics that the family has all the time, and is more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">a way of connecting<\/a> to them then fighting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is important because if a couple come from different backgrounds, <\/strong>one partner might think they are fighting.\u00a0 The other partner could feel they are just having a fiery and even enjoyable discussion.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Our regular way of talking heats up. We fight over if we are taking the car or not to a party, or if we should go visit relatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unhealthy fighting tends to be less about a pressing issue and more about one of the partners him or herself.<\/strong> It often signals a deeper unresolved issue in the relationship. This generally involves an attack on one partner\u2019s \u2018unacceptable\u2019 behaviours.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Power dynamics signify the healthiness of your couple fighting.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>A healthy fight tends to see both people being seen as equals.<\/strong> These fights tend to be more objective. For example, if you are fighting over one partner\u2019s inability to show up to events on time, the fight stays about whether being on time is important or not.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Unhealthy arguments veer into power dynamics that diminish one partner while glorifying the other. Or they see one partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">vying for control<\/a> of the other.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So if that argument about the value of timekeeping were to become unhealthy? It would mean one partner implied they were more grown up than the other, more responsible. That the always late partner should be grateful they stay with them, or that from now on the tardy partner will receive alerts in the hours leading up to a meeting have to respond to. Can you smell the power tripping and control?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. It can become unhealthy fighting if <\/strong>it becomes about the fighting itself inserted of seeking resolution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This often looks like<\/strong> endless, sniping arguments about some small thing like loading the dishwasher. It becomes more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\">unloading stress<\/a> on each other than about ever sorting out the issue. Over time this sort of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">repetitive fighting<\/a> can be extremely damaging.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. If there is an abusive component to the fighting then the answer is <em>never<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>If your fights with a partner involve<\/strong> physical abuse of any shape or form (grabbing you, for example, can still be physical abuse)? Or you are being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/honesty-criticism-or-verbal-abuse.htm\">psychologically abused<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manipulative-behaviour-are-you-guilty.htm\">manipulated<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\">emotionally abused<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Then there is NO healthy level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These types of relationships are really hard to exit. If you know you are in one, don\u2019t<\/strong> beat yourself up that you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leave-unhappy-relationship.htm\">finding it hard to walk away<\/a>. Just seek support.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it possible you aren&#8217;t fighting ENOUGH?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Being with someone and never fighting because you <\/strong>share communication styles so resolve things quickly is one thing. Lucky you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But look at your intentions behind never fighting. And look at your<\/strong> private thoughts about your partner and your relationship. Do you have any hidden resentment or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bitterness.htm\">bitterness<\/a>? Is there a list in your head of all the things you don&#8217;t like about your partner and relationship?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">If you never engage in relationship conflict because you are afraid of conflict or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/codependency-symptoms-modern-times.htm\">are so codependent<\/a> you feel you have to please your partner over upset them? Then some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ten-tips-for-anger-management-in-relationships.htm\">healthy conflict<\/a> could actually be good for your relationship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>So what&#8217;s the final answer? Look to how you feel<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Healthy levels of fighting? They leave you feeling, well&#8230;. healthy. This includes physically, emotionally, and mentally.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If your couple fighting means you sometimes are frustrated, but in general within your relationship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">feel connected<\/a>? Challenged, energised, and like are growing as a person? Then you are fine. You have a healthy level of healthy conflict.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the conflict in your relationship means you feeling diminished,<\/strong> anxious, and exhausted, then it&#8217;s a red flag that either the couple fighting is out of control, or that you have a serious problem with honest communication and conflict. Sometimes conflict isn&#8217;t unhealthy but triggers our unresolved past trauma.
