Darcy<\/p>\n<p>Domestic violence has taken a back seat lately to topics like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rise-in-self-harming.htm\">self harm<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexual-assault-long-term-psychological-effects-survivors-need-know.htm\">the #metoo movement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But don&#8217;t mistake that for implying the situation is improving &#8211; quite the opposite.<\/strong>\u00a0 Police in the UK have recently seen a 23% increase in reports of domestic violence. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/crimeandjustice\/bulletins\/domesticabuseinenglandandwales\/yearendingmarch2018\">Office of National Statistics&#8217; 2018 report on domestic abuse<\/a> estimates 2 million adults were victims in the past year.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0And there are still many myths about domestic violence we need to keep talking about.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">[Want to try talking to a counsellor you can trust about what you are going through? <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">Book one of our online therapists now<\/a><\/span> from wherever you are in the world.]<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Myths about domestic violence<\/h2>\n<p>What are the myths that need to be exposed?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Domestic violence is awful, but not as bad as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexual-assault-long-term-psychological-effects-survivors-need-know.htm\">sexual assault<\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">Abuse<\/a> is all awful and prioritising one<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">trauma<\/a> over the other is not a helpful game.<\/p>\n<p>This said, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/live-life-like-victim-12-ways-tell.htm\">victim<\/a> of domestic abuse runs a much higher risk of being murdered than in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexual-assault-long-term-psychological-effects-survivors-need-know.htm\"> cases of sexual assault<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Two women die every week in the United Kingdom as a result of domestic violence. Yes, that&#8217;s right, every week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Domestic violence means you are physically hurt.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While many cases of domestic violence do involve physical abuse, it is not a given.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Domestic violence also includes<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">sexual abuse<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\">\u00a0emotional abuse<\/a>, and\u00a0psychological abuse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another form of abuse now coming to attention that is often part of domestic violence is<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-economic-abuse.htm\">economic abuse<\/a>. This happens when a partner controls, intimidates, and traps you using finances. They might steal your resources, or refuse to let you access any so that you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dependent-personality-disorder.htm\">dependent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. The biggest rising demographic for domestic violence is the 16-24 age range.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Domestic violence happens to women and not men.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Around six per cent of domestic violence cases in the UK are abused men. Of the estimated 2 million cases in the last year, 695,000 are male attributed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it&#8217;s highly likely numbers are much higher<\/strong>, given men are much less likely to report abuse for fears of being seen as &#8216;unmanly&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Most cases of domestic violence begin during unhappy times when a couple is fighting.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Wrong. Domestic violence can start at any point in the relationship, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-healthy-destructive-relationship\">after a few dates<\/a>, after a great day together, or on a honeymoon.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The most common time for domestic abuse to start is actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/body-image-pregnancy-birth.htm\">during pregnancy<\/a>. The NHS shares that a shocking 30 percent of domestic cases are found to have started when the woman gets pregnant.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Domestic violence is more common in some cultures than others.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Possibly. But there is no culture that is untouched by domestic violence.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Domestic violence respects no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-domestic-violence.htm\">boundary<\/a>. It can happen to you regardless your class, background, education, economic bracket, culture, gender, or religion.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. If you are a victim of domestic violence you have to go straight to the police.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The myth stops many victims from seeking help. The idea of walking into a police office is too intimidating, so the victim does nothing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can actually reach out to many other sorts of helpers if you are not comfortable talking to the police. You could talk to<\/strong> your GP, a nurse in A&amp;E, health service staff, a midwife, or you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-helpline.htm\">call a help line<\/a>. They will then put you in touch with charities and NHS workers who then help you and support you if you need to file a complaint with the police.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. But nowadays, while the system in the UK is not perfect, there are far more cases of perpetrators being jailed.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The Office of National Statistics states that, &#8220;in the year ending March 2018, 76% of prosecutions resulted in a conviction.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If you are really worried that reporting domestic violence will backfire then talk to a domestic abuse charity. <\/strong>They can put you in touch with a solicitor. He or she can actually give you the facts about what might happen given what you&#8217;ve experienced.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">9. If the violence isn\u2019t physical but just emotional or mental you should be strong and stay for the children.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Absolutely not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Domestic violence of any kind is very <\/strong>d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">amaging for children<\/a>, who learn their ways of thinking and behaving from he environments they are in. The strongest thing you can do for your children is reach out for support and get out of the situation.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">10. Nobody will believe me and nobody can really help me.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/family-gathering-tips.htm\"> family members<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friends<\/a> have not believed you when you tried to talk, then you can start to feel this way. But this is just a sad case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/handling-depression-stigma.htm\">turning to the wrong people<\/a>. There are absolutely people out there who will believe you, not judge you, and listen to everything you have to say.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">11. It\u2019s best to seek support for domestic violence when you feel ready.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Domestic violence is insidious and manipulative.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">If you are suffering at the hands of an abuser your <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">self-esteem<\/a><\/span> will be so low, that the truth is you will never feel \u2018ready\u2019 to get help.
