That the brain creates <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">our emotions. And the therefore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/marijauna-paranoia-depression.htm\">drugs can affect our moods<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Even licensed &#8216;medicine&#8217; can have a marked negative effect on your mental health.<\/strong> A large-scale study of prescription drugs found that certain drugs, especially in combination, make you far more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">experience depression<\/a> (read all about this on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/news\/medication\/many-commonly-prescribed-drugs-linked-depression\/\">NHS page about drugs and depression<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><span class=\"s1\">But why do party drugs cause<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guilt-and-depression.htm\"> depression<\/a> or<a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\"> anxiety<\/a> when you don&#8217;t take them daily like meds? <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Yes, there is the inevitable &#8216;come down&#8217; that feels bad. How do party drugs affect your emotions long after you&#8217;ve taken them?<\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Party drugs and depression <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The nerve cells in your brain, or \u2018neurons\u2019, communicate with each other by giving off chemicals called \u2018neurotransmitters\u2019. It\u2019s the chemical that comes out to play whenever we do something that feels good, like hugging or eating chocolate. After the moment of pleasure, the dopamine is cycled back to\u00a0 the cell that sent it out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Drugs like cocaine come along and block this recycling process.<\/strong> The dopamine instead remains in the brain until it builds up to a point it gives you a rush, or a \u2018high\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">But here\u2019s the problem. If you block the natural recycling of dopamine back to its source enough, then the system effectively goes on the blink. Your natural dopamine is no longer being triggered. Suddenly, those<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\"><span class=\"s1\"> everyday things that always made you happy<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">? They no longer do. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>You feel numb instead of good. Worse, you develop<\/strong> dopamine tolerance, meaning you need more and more drugs to feel good. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And altering the mood chemicals isn&#8217;t the only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-to-do-if-you-feel-depressed.htm\">reason you feel depressed<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Drugs create other situations, too, that put you more at risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">depression<\/a> &#8211; let&#8217;s look at how this works.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">High then real <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">People use drugs to feel amazing. To throw themselves into such states that they forget about things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">bills<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-deal-with-difficult-boss.htm\">work problems<\/a>, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">physical pain<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">But real life is not bliss. It involves <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-at-dealing-with-conflict.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">conflict<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\"> and challenges. And the contrast between a drug high and reality can start making reality seem worse and worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_100725\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8020203285_6df8145dbb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100725\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-100725\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8020203285_6df8145dbb-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"party drugs\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8020203285_6df8145dbb-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8020203285_6df8145dbb.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8020203285_6df8145dbb-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-100725\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: torbakhopper<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Meaning we get depressed, or the <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">depression we started taking party drugs to avoid becomes worse. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Party drugs and sleep <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">Poor sleep<\/a> is often a trigger for depression.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And of course party drugs also mean<\/strong> we skip sleep, riding out the night on a high. Yes, maybe you spend all Sunday sleeping. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But it\u2019s not proper sleep when you have been using drugs. For example,\u00a0<\/strong>things like opiates, morphine and methadone mean your brain is often switching into lighter phases of sleep (see research about this in the British Sleep Society&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepsociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Recreational_Drugs_and_Sleep.pdf\">Guide to Recreational Drugs and Sleep<\/a>&#8220;.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><strong><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0So poor sleep is yet another factor why party drugs be killing your capacity to feel anything beyond miserable.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Foggy head and poor organisation <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Always being tired also has a knock on affect on your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">clarity of mind<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/procrastination-big-deal.htm\">organisational skills<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It lead to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/changing-workplace.htm\"> issues at work<\/a>, missing important appointments, messing up things like paying rent on time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Suddenly life is far more stressful, and your<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\"> self-esteem<\/a> can plummet when you realise you are not coping. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-help-a-partner-with-depression-anxiety-trauma.htm\">Anxiety and depression<\/a> are hugely connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Drugs, drama, and loneliness\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Drugs make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-end-my-relationship.htm\">relationships complicated<\/a>.<\/strong> Perhaps your partner disapproves. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Or perhaps drugs are what you have in common with a partner or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8216;friends<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8216;. But secretly you wonder, when you aren\u2019t high together, if you even get along. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">Do they even really know or like you<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> If drugs are the real basis of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">connection<\/a> to your friends you might secretly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\">feel very lonely<\/a> &#8211; a leading factor in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\"> cases of severe depression<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This is especially true is your drug use has caused you to lose touch with<\/strong> older friends who knew you well but aren\u2019t into drugs. Or if you are not connecting with your family as much as you know they\u2019d be disappointed in you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>But party drugs keep me going&#8230;<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Party drugs can seem like they are helping you. But it&#8217;s a short-term gain with a long-term cost<\/strong>, including on your mental wellbeing.
