Which makes it next to impossible to feel good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">Identifying your personal values<\/a> &#8211; <\/strong>stability, freedom, adventure, charity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">wealth<\/a>, simplicity &#8211; then starting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/decision-making-skills-mental-health.htm\">make choices<\/a> that are in line with them? Suddenly things feel not only easier, but <i>good. <\/i>You feel excited about what you are doing, instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/burnout-symptoms-treatment-tips.htm\">burned out<\/a> by it. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. You are responsible for your life. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friends are important<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But if there are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\">people who put you down<\/a>, even jokingly, or simply feel your desire to change is \u2018silly\u2019 or \u2018not going to to happen\u2019? Cut them loose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Seek out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">people you feel good around<\/a>, and who share your values.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You&#8217;ll <\/strong><\/span><strong>benefit from what is now seen as a crucial ingredient of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">connection<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-overcome-loneliness.htm\">Loneliness<\/a> is a quagmire that holds us down.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\"> Feeling seen and accepted<\/a> sets us free.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Switch perspective. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">How would it feel to learn that life was a house, and you have locked yourself into one room? Convinced that was the whole building? This is actually how many people spend their whole lives. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They are so convinced the way they see things is all there is they don\u2019t even see the door in front of them. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">Take a problem you have lately, and try <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspective hopping<\/a><\/span>. How would your 85 year-old self see this \u2018giant problem\u2019? How would the Dalai Lama see it? A person living in severe poverty or in a war zone? The richest person in the world? You get the point. You are only seeing a limited angle.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Another way to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">open up your perspective<\/a> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/gratitude-tips.htm\">daily gratitude practice<\/a>. It shifts your perspective away from seeing what isn\u2019t working to seeing what is. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\">Daily gratitude is proven by research<\/a> to improve moods, energy, and even mean<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\"> less illness<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Find that, and all things will follow, right? Except that if we had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">difficult upbringing<\/a>, esteem can takes years to rebuild.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">Compassion<\/a> is the shortcut. It means<\/b>\u00a0we start treating ourselves like we would a best friend. We let ourselves off the hook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the more show ourselves kindness, the easier it becomes t<\/strong>o be nicer to others. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">relationships improve<\/a>. We feel better. And it&#8217;s found that self-esteem naturally grows if we start with compassion.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Seek proper, professional support. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Life can very much be a \u2018can\u2019t see the woods for the trees\u2019 situation. Often we have no idea what we are even doing wrong, and can spend years (or even decades) trying to find our way in the dark.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">Family<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friends<\/a> are useful to an extent, but can be too invested in situations to give unbiased support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you really want to change as fast as possible, consider a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a>.
