Things which might not upset others will trigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">our body\u2019s memory of trauma<\/a>, leaving us a mess. So trauma therapy needs to take this into account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instead of assuming regular t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/trauma-counselling-london.htm\">herapy will work for your complex trauma<\/a> or PTSD? Consider the following types of therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"> You can avoid being so triggered by therapy you feel worse than when you started.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR)<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This type of therapy works best when you have <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">had one strong traumatic event<\/a> that has given you post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/flashback-vs-hallucination-vs-delusion.htm\">flashbacks<\/a>. It might work for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-counselling-london.htm\">complex PTSD<\/a>, made of consistent trauma over time, but it depends on the individual. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The process of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/emdr-therapy.htm\">EMDR<\/a> can sound odd. You talk about your traumatic experiences as the therapist gets your eyes to make rapid movements. <\/strong>This can involve flashing a light in your eyes or asking you to follow a pencil with your eyes. Yes, it might sound strange, but it&#8217;s proven by research to be very effective, and approved by the necessary<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/registered-therapists-quality-standards-uk.htm\"> therapy associations<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Why is CBT recommended for trauma?<\/strong> For starters, it\u2019s not about talking endlessly about your past. While that might help a person with general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety or depression<\/a>, talking about past trauma can re-traumatise someone with complex PTSD. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">CBT therapy is better as it focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">your life right now<\/a>. And trauma tends to make your brain think in just these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">dramatic extremes<\/a> (the world is dangerous, I can\u2019t do anything right) that CBT excels at neutralising. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A cognitive behavioural therapist can also help you start to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-behavioral-interventions.htm\">take control of your behaviours<\/a>, so you are not always hiding from life or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\">sabotaging yourself<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Some therapists even offer a type of CBT geared just for trauma, called &#8220;trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy&#8221; (TF-CBT).\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Note that CBT is a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/short-term-therapy-vs-long-term-therapy.htm\">short-term therapy<\/a>. You and the therapist will commit in the first few sessions to how long you\u2019ll work together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Schema Therapy <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-schema-therapy.htm\">Schema therapy<\/a> focuses on helping you recognise and change behavioural patterns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>More importantly, for those who suffered childhood trauma, it shows you how to have<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\"> trusting relationships<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If your trauma involved being neglected or<\/strong> abused by a parent or caregiver you are unlikely to have had trusting relationships since. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">The loneliness not being able to trust others brings can lead to depression and anxiety. This means they are very supportive and understanding, like a parent figure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Schema therapy is particularly recommended for those who<\/strong> suffered sexual abuse as a child and now have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-counselling-london.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Dialectical behaviour therapy <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This is another form of therapy that helps those who suffered<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">sexual abuse<\/a>, and now have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">complex trauma<\/a>, and\/or borderline personality disorder. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The creator of this type of therapy suffered BPD herself. <\/strong>She wanted to create a therapy that could help those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">impulsivity<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\">emotional dysregulation<\/a> to create a life they felt good being in. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/dialectical-behaviour-therapy-london.htm\">DBT<\/a> combines things like mindfulness and behavioural interventions. It is often done using a combination of group work and then one-on-one sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Body-based psychotherapy <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Post-traumatic stress disorder is a highly physical experience. <\/strong>It can involve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">muscle tension<\/a>, jumpiness, constant colds and flus or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/medically-unexplained-symptoms.htm\">unexplained medical symptoms<\/a>, headaches, stomach upsets, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a>. Why is this?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For starters, if our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">stress response<\/a> is too easily triggered due to past trauma, then our body will be releasing stress hormones that can help cause such symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">But the other idea is that the body \u2018stores\u2019 trauma. This can particularly be true in cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/abuse-counselling-london.htm\">physical or sexual abuse<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Body psychotherapy is a licensed form of psychotherapy.<\/strong> It combines talking about and processing the past with listening to the body itself, and might use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-power-of-body-language.htm\">body movements<\/a> to release emotions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Some body psychotherapists use a tool called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-somatic-therapy.htm\">somatic therapy<\/a>&#8216; or &#8216;somatic processing&#8217;.<\/strong>\u00a0It is a technique designed just to help clients who have gone through traumatic experiences.
