Need someone to talk to, fast? <a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=harleytherapy.co.uk&amp;utm_content=Post%20End\">Book one of our online therapists<\/a> today, get help as soon a tomorrow.]<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is self identity, anyway? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Self identity, or \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-self-concept.htm\">self concept<\/a>\u2019 in psychology, refers to <strong>the ways you perceive, describe and evaluate yourself\u00a0<\/strong>in relation to others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">What do you see as your qualities, your defining characteristics and your responsibilities in the world? <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">It sounds very individual. And yet <strong>our sense of self is heavily influenced by others around us (our &#8216;social identity&#8217;) and also the environments we exist in and grew up in. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>For more, please read<\/strong> our article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-self-concept.htm\">What is Self Concept, and How Can It Help You?<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can my sense of self change? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It&#8217;s true that most of our self-identity is formed as children and teens.<\/strong> As children we imitate those around us, and then as teenagers we challenge all that we have been imitating until we find what identity works for us. Developmental psychologist Erik Erikson called this adolescent stage &#8216;identity vs role confusion&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But then life challenges arrive,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>and we learn<\/strong> new things about ourselves and the world that change us. So yes, our self-identity can fluctuate. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">It&#8217;s okay to not always be sure who you are, or to question yourself. As long as you are coping with daily life and are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\"><span class=\"s1\"> resilient<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\"> enough to handle challenges and navigate relationships, your sense of self is probably fine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If our sense of self is very low, and we aren&#8217;t coping, we might experience an &#8216;identity crisis&#8217;<\/strong>. Look to your relationships.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A poor sense of self can mean that in relationships others struggle to understand us.<\/strong> This can leave us<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\"> very lonely<\/a> and even<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-to-do-if-you-feel-depressed.htm\">\u00a0depressed<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Or we can make the mistake of trying to find an identity though our relationships<\/strong>, meaning we mistake <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/codependency-symptoms-modern-times.htm\">codependency<\/a> for love. We might even choose one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leave-unhappy-relationship.htm\">unhealthy relationship<\/a> after another.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why do I have a poor sense of self and identity? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Having a poor sense of self is often a product of a difficult childhood, where you experienced<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">emotional neglect<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Emotional neglect means that we didn\u2019t receive proper<\/strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">attachment<\/a>\u2019 as a child. This means you didn\u2019t have a caregiver you could rely on to love and accept you no matter what. You learned to adapt yourself in order to receive love, hiding your\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">true thoughts and feelings. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">The result is we grow up into adults who are so used to being what others want, we no longer know who we really are. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">Trauma<\/a>, on the other hand, damages our sense of self because it destroys our<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\"> capacity to trust<\/a> not just others, but our very selves. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Self identity and mental illness <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Having a changing sense of self can mean we aren\u2019t always able to function in society, or are even seen as<\/strong> \u201cmentally ill\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\">Mental health diagnoses<\/a> that involve a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">lack of self identity<\/a> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">schizophrenia <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-dissociative-disorder.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">dissociative disorder<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dependent-personality-disorder.htm\">dependent personality disorder<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-autism-spectrum-disorder.htm\">autism<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">Borderline personality disorder (BPD)<\/a> can also affect your sense of self. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\"> impulsivity<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">overreacting<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-relationships.htm\">BPD<\/a> leads to can mean you feel out of control of your self ,or even like you are a different person with each other person you know. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How can we improve our sense of self? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Our sense of self and our self-esteem are interconnected.\u00a0<\/strong>In fact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/benefits-of-therapy-carl-rogers.htm\">Carl Rogers<\/a>, the father of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-listener-person-centred-counselling.htm\">person-centred psychotherapy<\/a>, felt that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">self-esteem<\/a> was one of the main ingredients of self-identity, alongside our self image and our ideal self.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Routes to finding self-worth can be<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">identifying your personal values<\/a>, then starting to make choices that match your values instead of go against them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\">Working on your wellbeing<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">upping your self-care are<\/a> other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">routes to self-esteem<\/a>. Make a list of all the activities that make you feel good and start scheduling them into your diary like you would a work meeting. Isn&#8217;t feeling good that important?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then work on your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">self-compassion<\/a>, a shortcut to better self worth. How could you treat yourself more like you treat your valued friends?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The fastest way to a sense of self?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">If we experienced neglect or trauma as a child our sense of self can be so damaged we need support to find our way back to ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Working with a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a> is then highly recommended.
