So\u00a0 should you actually be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worried<\/a> if &#8216;fear of missing out&#8217; has you in its grip? And is it actually a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a> concern, or overrated?<\/p>\n<h3>What is FOMO, exactly?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>FOMO, or fear of missing out, is not actually a term that arose from psychology\u00a0<\/strong>but from marketing, but has been adopted as a psychological topic.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Fear of missing out, or FOMO, refers to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worry <\/a><span style=\"color: #800080;\">created when we think that missing out on an event or experience will negatively affect our lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Why does it matter?<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs11031-018-9683-5\"> Research<\/a> shows that FOMO stresses us out. Trying to keep up and not miss out leads to<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">fatigue<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\"> sleep problems<\/a>, higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress levels<\/a>, and even physical symptoms, like ongoing colds and flu (too many parties, not enough sleep?).<\/p>\n<h3>Why FOMO is nothing new<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Although it\u2019s now connected to social media, FOMO is nothing new.\u00a0<\/strong>Psychology has long identified that as humans we are motivated by things outside of ourselves<strong>. <\/strong>&#8216;Self determination&#8217; theory has been around since the 1980s, and believes that one of our three core needs as humans is &#8216;relatedness&#8217;, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>While &#8216;intrinsic motivation&#8217;, such as our<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">values and beliefs<\/a>, are healthy motivators to meet our needs, we are also influenced by &#8216;extrinsic motivation&#8217;, things outside of ourselves that give us a feeling of reward. Such as, say, approval by other people on social media for being at the &#8216;right&#8217; events and getaways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From an evolutionary psychology point of view, FOMO could be even be seen as a type of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">survival skill.<\/a> Knowing what was going on in your tribe and with tribes around us probably meant you&#8217;d know where a food source was, or where wild animals to be avoided were. And you are panicking you won\u2019t get a ticket, or have the night off, and will never get over the missed opportunity?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Entirely normal.\u00a0 Worry about whether we will or will not <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/new-year-goals.htm\">attain a goal<\/a><\/span> or dream happens because we want to avoid <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-let-down.htm\">being disappointed<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>But if your FOMO is consistently connected to missing random social events &#8211;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\"> parties<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">drinks out<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/holiday-romance-mental-health.htm\">weekends away<\/a> &#8211; usually with the same group of people? This is where fear of missing out can take a dark turn.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">When you are worried you won\u2019t be \u2018in the know\u2019, that other are having fun without you? Fear of missing out is actually about your <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-sense-of-self-who-am-i.htm\">identity<\/a><\/span>. You mistake who you really are with what you do, and how you appear to others &#8211; your \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-self-concept.htm\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">self concept<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2019. And this could be a reason\u00a0<span style=\"color: #808080;\"><a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">social media<\/a><\/span> creates so much FOMO. It&#8217;s all about self concept, the way we present ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>he more you focus on your self concept, your <em>idea<\/em> of who you <em>should<\/em> be, the further you can float from the real you<\/strong> &#8211; your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values<\/a>, your sense of purpose, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-goals.htm\"> goals that match these values<\/a>. And the more you float away from this<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-self-actualization.htm\"> &#8216;actualised\u2019 self<\/a>, the more unsettled you feel.<\/p>\n<h3>When FOMO is actually normal<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_101289\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4238365597_294d028d43.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101289\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4238365597_294d028d43-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"fear of missing out\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4238365597_294d028d43-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4238365597_294d028d43.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-101289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pedrobelleza\/4238365597\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Pedro Belleza<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>There is a point in time it could be argued FOMO is actually normal \u2014 adolescence.<\/strong> Erick Erickson was a psychologist famous for writing about human development. He defined eight different stages to our \u2018psychosocial development\u2019 that we need to master to become contributing members of society.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between ages 12 to 18, we go through a stage he called \u201cIdentity vs. Role Confusion\u201d. Our main job here is to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">develop a sense of self<\/a> and answer questions like, &#8220;Who am I?\u201d, \u201cWhat am I here for?\u201d, \u201cWhat am I going to do with the rest of my life?\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">So it\u2019s perfectly normal as a<span style=\"color: #808080;\"><a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\"> teenager<\/a><\/span> to \u2018try\u2019 on\u2019 different personalities and identities. This can of course create a feeling that you need to try everything, or you might miss out on finding yourself.\u00a0But the more you realise what truly matters to you <span style=\"color: #808080;\">(<a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">your values<\/a>)<\/span>, the more you realise that you are you, and a party is just a party.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>In your twenties, and feel like you are still \u2018trying on\u2019 who you are? Don\u2019t panic. Some psychologists feel<\/strong> that development markers are moving. We are taking longer to figure out who we are, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/helicopter-parenting.htm\">living at home with our parents longer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Given that most research studies to date done on FOMO were carried out on university students<\/strong>, it does stand to question if FOMO is indeed an inflated issue.<\/p>\n<h3>What makes one person more susceptible to FOMO than another?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Some people try to connect FOMO to extroversion<\/strong>. It&#8217;s true that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jung-personality-types.htm\">extroverts<\/a> are naturally outward-looking &#8212; they\u00a0 seek answers from people and environments outside themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But extroversion alone doesn\u2019t cause FOMO<\/strong>, nor is it an essential ingredient (in fact <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs11031-018-9683-5\">a Canadian study<\/a> found that FOMO didn&#8217;t directly correlate to extraversion at all, but was felt by everyone).<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are well out of your twenties and suffer constant FOMO, then\u00a0<\/strong>it&#8217;s more likely connected to one or several of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity issues<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">lack of real connection in your life<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/codependency-symptoms-modern-times.htm\">codependency<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How would we end up with these issues? Often we didn\u2019t get enough<\/strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">attachment\u2019 as a child<\/a>, either through inconsistent parenting or because or capacity to attach in healthy ways was damaged by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Healthy attachment means we had at least one caregiver we could rely on to be a consistent, stable, and safe source of love, regardless of our own behaviour. Without that we end up with \u2018<a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\">anxious attachment<\/a>\u2019, meaning we worry if others like us or not, crave attention and approval, and fear rejection. Which, as you can imagine, makes us a perfect FOMO candidate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">[Ready to deal with your fear of missing out for once and for all? Or a psychological condition?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>FOMO every Friday when you scan social media for how others are<\/strong> spending the weekend, or when you cruise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">Facebook<\/a> and see pictures of your other friends on vacation together? That&#8217;s one thing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But if your &#8216;fear of missing out&#8217; is a daily or constant occurence, and directly affects your daily life and your coping skills? It&#8217;s probably more than just FOMO.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at the main FOMO contenders.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>If your mind doesn&#8217;t just worry about missing out on an event, but also how that might then lead to the end of all your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friendships<\/a>, then maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leaving-a-relationship.htm\">your partner will break up with you<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-deal-with-difficult-boss.htm\">your boss<\/a> will hate you, and suddenly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\">you are all alone<\/a> and homeless and&#8230;. well, you get the point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Irrational whirring thoughts laced with doom and gloom are not just FOMO, but anxiety<\/strong>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">Talk to a counsellor<\/a> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a> before it rolls into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\">anxiety disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Depression\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Do you feel so terrible and left out if you miss out on something you then don&#8217;t want to talk to anyone at all?<\/strong>\u00a0Are you then plagued with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\"> negative thoughts<\/a>, full of doom and gloom, or do you feel like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\">life is not worth living<\/a> after a case of FOMO? This is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Borderline personality disorder\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Do you feel absolutely frantic if others go out without you, and actually feel<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/abandonment-issues.htm\">abandoned<\/a>? Then get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\">really emotional<\/a> about it or have fiery arguments? Do you sometimes do little things to get revenge on people who don&#8217;t invite you, or have dark thoughts? Then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rise-in-self-harming.htm\">self-harm<\/a> to calm down? Have you ever abruptly cut people out of your life for leaving you out? Do others tell you you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\"> overreact<\/a> or are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\"> dramatic<\/a>?
