Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>FOMO is now the subject of psychological studies.<\/strong> Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because urban dictionary definition aside, the results of FOMO are real and include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">high levels of stress<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a>, and even<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\"> depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>So what can you do if you have &#8220;FOMO syndrome&#8221;?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>6 Ways to fight the FOMO<\/h2>\n<p><strong>FOMO is connected to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity issues<\/a>, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> (read all about this in our connected article,\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-missing-out-fomo.htm\">Is Fear of Missing Out Overrated<\/a>?&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<p>With such heavy credentials, you can&#8217;t stop FOMO overnight. Work on your self identity. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>FOMO is actually normal when we are a teenager. <\/strong>It&#8217;s the development stage when we are forming our sense of self &#8212; deciding what our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values<\/a> are, and what we want our life to look like.<\/p>\n<p>And there is nothing wrong with being an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jung-personality-types.htm\">extrovert<\/a> with changing interests who likes to be out there experiencing new things.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">But if you are well into\u00a0 your late twenties or thirties, frantically rushing from one event to the next no matter<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\"> how tired you are<\/a>, and stalking others you admire on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">social media<\/a> to make sure you are &#8216;in the know&#8217;? It&#8217;s time to ask yourself if your constant\u00a0patching together of an &#8216;approved&#8217; exterior is actually\u00a0 a way of compensating for your lack of interior development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sometimes it is simply neglectful or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/helicopter-parenting.htm\">manipulative parenting<\/a> that leaves us in a constant identity free fall as an adult. If you had to be &#8216;good&#8217; and &#8216;happy&#8217; to receive love as a child, you would have quickly learned to hide any other parts of yourself that were &#8216;unacceptable&#8217;. And practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">listening to your thoughts and feelings<\/a> instead of brushing them aside. Useful tools here include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">journaling<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindfulness<\/a>, and working with a counsellor.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Find new friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>FOMO can be a big red flag that you don&#8217;t have<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\"> healthy relationships<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">friendships.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you fear that not being somewhere will leave you excluded, or that people will talk about you behind your back, then perhaps it&#8217;s time to look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">what sorts of friends you&#8217;ve chosen<\/a> and why.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">Solid friendships<\/a> don&#8217;t falter if you miss a night out. And<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\"> healthy romantic relationships<\/a> don&#8217;t suffer from time apart but often instead grow stronger.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Learn what connection even is.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Of course if you don&#8217;t actually know what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">proper connection<\/a> is then you won&#8217;t know how to choose better friendships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connection involves being around others with whom you can comfortably be yourself, <\/strong>and whose behaviour, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">beliefs and values<\/a> you can accept.\u00a0Read our articles on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">Connecting With People &#8211; Why You Find it Hard&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">Authentic Relationships<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Think connection sounds hokey, or can&#8217;t be such a big deal? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntu.ac.uk\/about-us\/news\/news-articles\/2018\/06\/fear-of-missing-out-driving-social-media-addiction,-study-suggests\">Research at the University of Nottingham<\/a> found that FOMO is often the result of &#8216;a deficit in psychological need, such as social connection.&#8221; And the researchers concluded that, &#8220;For this reason, living a socially fulfilling life where psychological needs toward social connections can be met may also help overcome anxiety associated with FOMO.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Address your intimacy issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Read about connection, but there&#8217;s just no way you are going there? <\/strong>You might have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\">fear of intimacy<\/a>. Try self-compassion.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-missing-out-fomo.htm\">Fear of missing out<\/a> is often connected to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-not-good-enough.htm\"> low self-worth<\/a>.\u00a0We think that if we are at the right places with the right people, then we will have value. Applied the standards you had for them to yourself?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Try it right now. <\/strong>Write a letter to that person about how you feel about them then read it aloud, but change the name to your own.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/paideia\/a\/ZMPtByrtdY9N8m5jPzwdnck\/?lang=en\">what research shows<\/a> &#8211; self-compassion, the art of being nice to yourself, raises your self-esteem with far less effort.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Get mindful.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>FOMO exists in the past (what we missed) and the future (What we might miss). <\/strong>The one place it isn&#8217;t is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">present momen<\/a>t.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a> is an amazingly easy technique that pulls your right into the here and now. With practice and consistency it also lowers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">anxiety and stress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">helps you focus<\/a>.
