Do you wish you could control your intrusive thoughts, but feel at a loss?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What are intrusive thoughts?<\/h2>\n<p>An intrusive thought is a thought, urge, or visual that flashes into your mind unbidden, and that you find upsetting and unwanted. But you can\u2019t seem to stop it coming or control it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intrusive thoughts are often outside of your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values<\/a> and morals, and can be angry, sexual, agressive, or even violent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We all have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shadow-self.htm\">shadow side<\/a>, and we all actually experience intrusive thoughts now and then.<\/strong> We are so furious we imagine someone else dead, visualise our workplace blowing up, or even have a terrible thought about hurting our own child. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">Guilt<\/a> hits, our rage subsides, and the thought stops.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But for some of us the thought doesn&#8217;t stop, it keeps coming\u00a0<\/strong>until we feel haunted. You might even start using compulsive behaviour, like counting, tapping, or hand washing, to try to control the thoughts. If your intrusive thinking is affecting your day-to-day life and capacity to cope? It can be a sign of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a> issue or disorder.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666699;\">[Worry your thoughts are out of control, really need someone to talk to? A thought is a thought, Again, we all have terrible, dark thoughts now and then. It\u2019s part of being human. Most of us never act on such thoughts.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If you are in a religion that has rigid ideas on what is right and wrong, you might<\/strong> suffer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guilt-and-depression.htm\">terrible guilt<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shame<\/a> over intrusive thoughts. Unfortunately, guilt tends to make the intrusive thoughts stronger, and you feel worse. If we are talking psychological definitions, yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intrusive thoughts are ones we hear loud and clear.<\/strong> They can feel like the voice of someone else running through our head, saying things we are not ready to accept we can feel, if we are still in denial of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shadow-self.htm\"> our shadow<\/a>. And intrusive thoughts tend to be exaggerated &#8212; really cruel, agressive,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexual-partners-double-standard.htm\"> sexual<\/a>, or even violent.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">Negative thoughts<\/a>, on the other hand, tend to hum along in the background like a radio we don\u2019t <\/strong>realise we left on. It\u2019s only when we decide to tune in that we realise we are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\"> constantly putting ourselves down<\/a> or thinking in black and white, dramatic ways. If we were raised with negative parents, or were always put down by a caregiver, we might not even realise our thoughts are negative, we are so used to pessimism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What intrusive and negative thoughts have in common is that they are both just thoughts and both can be changed with therapy<\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\"> Cognitive behavioural therapy<\/a>, a short-term psychotherapy, focuses just on helping you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\"> gain control of your thinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What psychological issues are connected to intrusive thoughts?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-counselling-london-ocd.htm\">Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) <\/a>is most commonly connected to intrusive thoughts. In an effort to control unwanted thoughts you start to practice compulsive behaviours like hand washing or counting.<\/p>\n<p>But there are several other mental health issues that involve intrusive thinking, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">ADHD<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-anger.htm\">anger issues<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anxiety-counselling-london.htm\">anxiety disorder<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/grass-is-greener-syndrome.htm\">body dysmorphic disorder<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">depression<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/eating-disorder-counselling-london.htm\">eating disorders<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-counselling-london.htm\">post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How can I manage intrusive thoughts?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_101307\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/43337236315_af722e3616.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101307\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/43337236315_af722e3616-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"what are intrusive thoughts\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/43337236315_af722e3616-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/43337236315_af722e3616.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/43337236315_af722e3616-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-101307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/143106192@N03\/43337236315\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Mike Cohen<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Again, blaming yourself for intrusive thoughts or judging yourself for having them just makes them worse. What things can you do instead?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Acceptance. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Remind yourself that you are not your thoughts, and that everyone has intrusive thoughts now and then.<\/p>\n<p>You might find certain phrases useful to repeat, such as, \u2018I am not my thoughts and I choose my actions\u2019, or \u2018I am a valuable person despite any thought I might have\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Journalling.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>What\u2019s important here is to promise yourself you\u2019ll rip up what you write. This creates a safe space for your mind to unload. Write out everything, don\u2019t worry about penmanship or legibility, and say whatever horrible thing you have in your head on the page. Then enjoy destroying the paper.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Mindfulness.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a> means you sit still and let your thoughts come and go without identifying with them. They lose power and become not much more than passing clouds. Despite what your thoughts try to tell you , you are NOT alone in this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Wellbeing activities. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Instead of just socialising, why not try a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\">wellbeing activity<\/a> with a friend? These are activities you have identified as the ones that always give you a positive lift. Read our article on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">The Steps to Wellbeing<\/a>&#8221; for more.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Get physical.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For many people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise<\/a> is a wellbeing activity that works, chiefly as it pulls us out of thoughts and into our bodies. Even a quick walk around the block or dancing around your living room to some of your favorite songs helps. Or take a hot bath.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Cognitive behavioural therapy. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Again, CBT therapy actually focuses on helping you gain control of your thoughts, not just for now but for the rest of your life. Your thinking starts to become more and more balanced, and with time even positive. It\u2019s an evidence-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anxiety-counselling-london.htm\">treatment for anxiety<\/a>, depression, PTSD, and OCD.<\/p>\n<h2>When should I worry about intrusive thoughts?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Again, thoughts are just thoughts, and are not dangerous unless we act on them.<\/strong> It becomes about managing the thoughts so that they do not control you or mean you find daily life difficult.<\/p>\n<p>If your thoughts are self-destructive, you might find our article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\">How to Handle Suicidal Thoughts&#8221;<\/a> helpful.
