Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Have a voice inside your head always telling you what you did wrong?<\/strong> Or does every joke you make have you as the punchline? <em>Being hard on yourself isn\u2019t funny, and learning to stop the habit can be life changing.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Why are you so hard on yourself?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>That negative voice in your head isn\u2019t something you were born with. Somewhere along the way you<\/strong> learned to think like this. It might have been a parent who always criticised you, a teacher who<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\"> shamed you<\/a>, or even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-issues-in-childhood.htm\">sibling<\/a> who constantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/child-being-bullied.htm\">bullied you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Always being hard on yourself can also be the result of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)<\/a>. Is it true? Were you actually in the middle of putting yourself down?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or make a list of all the things you think about yourself, being as honest as you can.<\/strong> Do they sound compassionate, or are they tough?<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are brave enough, ask friends and family for their honest feedback. <\/strong>Or even to\u00a0point out to you (gently) when you are being hard on yourself.<\/p>\n<h2>7 Ways to Stop Being So Hard On Yourself<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Why does it matter? Being hard on yourself can lead to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression and anxiety<\/a>, and it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-anxiety.htm\">makes relationships hard<\/a>. Why not try these actionable steps?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Record your Wins.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>When we are truly hard on ourselves our mind glazes over any accomplishments or accolades, or even forgets them entirely.<\/strong> Writing them down can feel uncomfortable, or be something you try to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">sabotage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But it is more powerful than it sounds, because focusing on what we do right? It slowly but surely<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"> changes our perspective<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If you find it too hard to stick to, try piggybacking this new habit to an old habit. For example<\/strong>, make your nightly teeth-brushing time the moment you find five things to be proud of from the day. Try saying them out loud to the mirror for an extra boost.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Write it out of your head.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Our unconscious can be a tricky beast when it wants to be, and can be set up to protect us. So just \u2018<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">journalling<\/a><strong>\u2019<\/strong> might be helpful, but it&#8217;s unlikely you will allow yourself to really write out your dark secrets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trick your brain into a proper cathartic download by promising yourself to not<\/strong> read what you write and rip up the paper immediately afterwards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And then go for it &#8211; write out all your dark, scathing,<\/strong> self-flagellating thoughts, not worrying about penmanship or if you sound like an angry 5 year-old. Then enjoy the ripping. (Do however follow the protocol of not reading and destroying &#8211; the last thing you need is to turn this into yet another way to be torture yourself!).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Do a \u2018friend\u2019 detox.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We can hardly feel good about ourselves if we constantly surround ourselves with people who are unkind to us, or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bullying-in-the-workplace-case-study.htm\">bully us<\/a>. So we might need to re-educate ourselves about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">what a good friend actually is,<\/a>\u00a0then try to get out there and change up our social circle.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But before you go and get rid of real friends, note that sometimes we are actually pushing our friends to criticise us without realising it. Read our article, <span style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\">Are you Secretly Encouraging Criticism&#8221;<\/a>?<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">difficult colleagues<\/a> who are lacking in the nice department, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">learn about boundaries<\/a> and perhaps start setting some.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Start the self-compassion.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-101484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/katrina-1354592-unsplash-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"305\" \/>Forget about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/video-how-to-practice-self-love.htm\">self-love<\/a>, which is a big ask for the best of us. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">Try self-compassion<\/a> instead, the new way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\">raise your self -esteem<\/a> faster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Try this. Write a letter to<\/strong> your best friend. Tell him or her what you like about him or her, what you think about something they are struggling with lately. What advice do you have for him or her?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Now read the letter aloud but change the name to your name. How strange does it feel?\u00a0 And what would it feel like to talk to yourself like that all the time?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Kill the comparison.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">Comparing ourselves to others<\/a> is one of the easiest ways to keep ourselves feeling small. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">Social media<\/a> doesn&#8217;t help the habit. Remember that you are not actually comparing yourself to the other person, but to your perceived idea of them. You really have no idea what their private struggles are, and if you did, you might be glad to be you.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Seek support.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">Negative thinking<\/a> can be very addictive. So sometimes we need support to kick the habit. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> can be a powerful start. It focuses on helping you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">gain control of your thinking.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>From there, you might find a therapy that looks at your past helpful, such as<\/strong> one that comes under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychodynamic-approach.htm\">psychodynamic umbrella<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Again, being hard on yourself doesn\u2019t come from nowhere. It tends to come from<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">tough childhood experiences<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">parenting that didn\u2019t feed our very real need to be loved and supported<\/a> just as we were. These things can be quite overwhelming to unpack and process.
