(Or practise with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friends<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">family,<\/a> or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">difficult colleagues<\/a>). <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">Be fully present<\/a>.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t think this is a communication skill?<\/strong> It\u2019s one of the best.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">If we are in our heads all the time, worried about what to say next, we can seem so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">distracted<\/a> the other person assumes we aren&#8217;t interested.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When we work to be fully present, other people feel it. They are more likely to want to connect as you will suddenly feel &#8216;available&#8217;. As for what to say next, it comes more naturally when you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">in the present moment<\/a> because you are paying attention.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TRY THIS<\/strong>: If you feel nerves causing you to drift off or get caught up in thought, start noticing the things around you. Try to notice one visual detail (the colour of his\/her top), one smell (the food cooking in the restaurant), and one noise. Or get present using your body. So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\">listening skills<\/a> become a better<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\"> communication<\/a> skill than talking sometimes.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>TRY THIS<\/strong>: Put all your focus on what the other person is saying, repeating it in your head as they talk. Do not worry about what you will say next, do not think about what you will do next, or allow your mind to project into the future about what your kids would look like! Just simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">stay focused<\/a> and listen, then try the next step.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Reflect back.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Nervous and not sure what to say? Then just reflect back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reflecting back means you take what the person just said, rephrase it, and repeat it back to them. For example,<\/strong> they say, \u2018I really<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\"> love sport<\/a>, particularly climbing.\u2019 You say, \u2018Oh, you like climbing more than other sports\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It might sound simple or even obvious, yet you\u2019ll be surprised to find that nobody will notice that you are simply<\/strong> repeating what they are saying. Instead, they feel heard.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TRY THIS:<\/strong> Turn your reflecting into a question. &#8220;Ah, you really love climbing?&#8221; The other person will feel you are even more interested, and excitedly tell you about the new climbing centre they found.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">Ask good questions<\/a>.<\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_101554\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6835060992_de52d24f52.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101554\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101554\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6835060992_de52d24f52-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"communication skills\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6835060992_de52d24f52-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6835060992_de52d24f52.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-101554\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bilal-kamoon\/6835060992\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Bilal Kamoon<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Take a tip from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">life coaching<\/a>, and aim to ask \u2018how\u2019 or \u2018what\u2019 questions over \u2018why\u2019 ones.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Why&#8217; questions can come across as too intense or accusatory, particularly if you don\u2019t know the other person too well yet. It can also lead to him or her going down a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative rabbit hole<\/a>\u2026 why DO they want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">do well in their career<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;How&#8217; and &#8216;what&#8217; questions are forward looking. They are more likely to lead to new ideas and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/benefits-of-positive-thinking.htm\">positive thoughts<\/a>. &#8220;What will life look like then, if you do well in your career?&#8221; Suddenly the other person is realising more about what they want from life, and attributing it to your wisdom, when all you did was ask a good question.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TIP:<\/strong> If you just met the person, ask questions depending on what the other person is already sharing, or you risk leaving the other person feeling interrogated. And if it&#8217;s a first date, leave questions about their dating history or future plans for\u00a0 kids and family for another time.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Use the power of the pause.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Instead of filling every moment with nervous babbling, allow a pause. It\u2019s a moment to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connect<\/a> in ways other than words, like with glances and smiles. Plus it allows the other person move the conversation in a way that they might have been waiting to.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TRY THIS:<\/strong> when you pause, use the moment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">relax your shoulders<\/a> and breathe. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\">confidence<\/a> to pause in a relaxed over anxious way can help the other person suddenly feel more relaxed, too.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Stop immediately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nobody wants to date a mirror. <\/strong>And a little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">disagreement<\/a> can actually cause attraction, anyway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plus, blind agreement is dishonest. Even if it<\/strong> leads to short-term gain, it\u2019s going to lead to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\"> heartache<\/a> later when he or she realises you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manipulative-behaviour-are-you-guilty.htm\"> manipulated<\/a> them.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TRY THIS: <\/strong>Appreciate the other person&#8217;s point before disagreeing. \u201cI see your point, but I see it this way\u2026\u201d. This helps the other person feel heard instead of competed with or attacked. You might also want to try the phrase \u201cI could be wrong\u201d. It shows that you are open to learning more. \u201cI see your point, and I could be wrong, but I feel this way about it\u2026\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Use open body language.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>No amount of good listening, good questions, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\">being present<\/a> is going to work to attract the other person if you are sitting with your arms crossed, your shoulders crunched up, and wearing a big frown.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open your arms and keep reminding yourself to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">relax your shoulders and your jaw<\/a>. You will come across as far less closed off. And a light smile always helps.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TRY THIS:<\/strong> Give \u2018mirroring\u2019 a go. Studies show that people feel that they have something in common with someone if the other person mirrors their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-power-of-body-language.htm\">body language<\/a>. If they cross their legs, cross yours. If they lean in, you lean in a little too. Although if they are crossing their arms, leaning back, and angling their body away, you might not want to mirror &#8211; it\u2019s the body language of not being interested!<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. Drop the advice.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Second only to a monologue about yourself as a key way to turn people off is <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/giving-advice-in-relationships.htm\">giving advice.<\/a> Even if you mean to be helpful, you\u2019ll come across as bossy and leave the other person feeling unheard.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TRY THIS:<\/strong> Only offer advice if the other person directly asks. If you aren\u2019t sure, then ask first. \u201cI do have experience with that myself, but I won\u2019t offer you advice unless you want it!&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">9. Show appreciation.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Flattery, offering compliments just to win approval, is neither honest nor attractive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Appreciation, on the other hand<\/strong>, means sharing something you genuinely like about the other person.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TRY THIS:<\/strong> Appreciation about looks can be misinterpreted. Try showing appreciation for a behaviour or trait instead. \u201cI really appreciate how nice you were to that waiter, it made me smile\u2019. \u201cI love what a good listener you are, thank you for that\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>What if I just can&#8217;t communicate well?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Do you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social anxiety<\/a>? Freeze every time you talk? Or always say things you don&#8217;t mean?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you really can&#8217;t be yourself around other people, and find<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connecting to others<\/a> overwhelming? It might be that you have past issues that are controlling your present behaviours. Perhaps the way you were parented meant you could never speak up and be yourself. Or maybe it was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\"> childhood trauma<\/a> that left you with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> and a belief you are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-does-nobody-like-me.htm\"> unlikeable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometimes we need support to learn how to share our thoughts and feelings, or to process the things that hold us back<\/strong>.
