If you declutter your life, will you feel better?\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The psychology of decluttering<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Let\u2019s look at how a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-space-mental-health.htm\">living space<\/a> and life declutter might lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">better wellbeing<\/a> for you and those around you &#8212; and when it might backfire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">[Life such a mess you can hardly get through your day, let alone declutter? The Gratitude Boost.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/gratitude-tips.htm\">Gratitude<\/a> itself was once the trend, <\/strong>and became the subject of extensive research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The results were impressive, showing that gratitude not only\u00a0 improved moods, but led to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\"> better sleep<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">more energy<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">greater desire to exercise<\/a> and less trips to the doctor (read our article for more, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\">How Practicing Gratitude Changes Your Moods<\/a>&#8216;).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">The popular \u2018Konmari method\u2019 of tidying might be better than just a general declutter because creator Marie Kondo places a\u00a0 focus on \u2018thanking\u2019 each item you give away for the value it bought to your life. She even encourages &#8216;thanking your house&#8217; and &#8216;being grateful to your clothes as you fold them&#8217;. Such methods have been made fun of by detractors, but are all ways of showing gratitude.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Konmari method or no, decluttering allows us to more easily see and access what we actually have, meaning we can be more grateful than if we have no idea what is\u00a0stuffed at the back of closets or sheds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Declutter your life, dopamine high?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Dopamine, one of the &#8216;feel good&#8217; chemicals in the brain, was previously misunderstood to be just a &#8216;pleasure hit&#8217;. <\/strong>But then <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18320725\/\">research showed<\/a> it&#8217;s not released in <em>response<\/em> to something good, but\u00a0 when we merely <em>anticipate <\/em>something important is about to happen. Dopamine is released if we think we are about to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">achieve a goal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">New ways of decluttering\u00a0have become about &#8216;systems&#8217;<strong>,<\/strong> decluttering in clearly marked stages. <\/span>Each stage is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">another goal achieved<\/a>, which in itself is <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10902-007-9057-2\">shown to raise our sense of wellbeing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But it also means you create a &#8216;feedback system&#8217; of dopamine, where you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-to-do-if-you-feel-depressed.htm\"> feel better<\/a> and also more motivated to keep going.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Better efficiency?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/content\/doi\/10.1108\/MD-02-2013-0084\/full\/html\">small study<\/a> at the University of Navarra in Spain showed &#8216;conscientious&#8217; people did better in tidy environments than messy ones. But the study didn&#8217;t account enough for variables, and it might be that less conscientious people can excel just fine in mess!<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Raised self-esteem.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Do you believe you are &#8216;a mess&#8217;, that you never change, and are hopeless at organisation? <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative self-talk<\/a>, and <strong>shows how mess and disorganisation can become a tool for self-criticism.\u00a0<\/strong> We place &#8216;get organised&#8217; on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/5-reasons-your-new-years-resolutions-never-work.htm\">yearly list of resolutions<\/a>, it doesn&#8217;t get done, and we beat ourselves up again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> believes that sometimes a faster way to a mental breakthrough is to use enforced action, called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-behavioral-interventions.htm\">&#8216;behavioural intervention<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">So one could argue that perhaps asking some friends for support and pushing yourself to do a big life declutter once and for all could be a way to break through long-held<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\"> negative core beliefs<\/a> about yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Facing up to repressed feelings and experiences.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Objects have stories. And sometimes those stories are things we\u2019ve tried to forget or not process. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>An example is clothing of a loved one that has passed on. Giving away the clothing, even years after the<\/strong> original<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\"> bereavement<\/a>, can release a final wave of grief you&#8217;ve been avoiding, and help you fully process the experience. Not necessarily \u2018fun\u2019, but certainly valuable for your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\"> mental health<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Improved relationships.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Unless you live alone*, clutter is a shared experience. <\/strong>Each person will have their own feelings about living with a surplus of things, and it can cause<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\"> tension in your family<\/a> or partnership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of course the way we approach a declutter becomes important here. It is not a good idea to throw out someone else\u2019s things without their approval. It\u2019s deceitful and bound to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-at-dealing-with-conflict.htm\">cause conflict<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Deciding to do a big life declutter together, on the other hand, can become an occasion to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connect<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\"> communicate.<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>*Note that if you are living by yourself, it&#8217;s worth noticing if your declutter is a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/get-closer-intimacy-issues.htm\">avoid intimacy<\/a>. Do you tell yourself you can&#8217;t have friends over because of mess? What would it feel like to remove that block?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Space for new goals.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_101580\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101580\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1165710848_1511994184-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"declutter your life\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1165710848_1511994184-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1165710848_1511994184.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-101580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dasqfamily\/1165710848\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Qfamily<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A common<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\"> life coaching<\/a> question is, &#8220;What are you willing to give up in order to have this new thing you want in your life?\u2019\u2019<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"s1\">We have limited<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/need-more-time.htm\"> time<\/a>, energy, and space in our lives.\u00a0 The idea is that by deciding on the &#8216;payment&#8217; we more easily get to our goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Decluttering is like backwards <a href=\"\/life-coaching-london.htm\">life coaching<\/a> &#8211; you give stuff up first, then suddenly have space and more time for a new goal. \u00a0Your \u2018spillover room\u2019 can now turn into a yoga space, or you newly empty garage an office to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/changing-workplace.htm\">start a small business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When &#8216;declutter your life&#8217; goes wrong <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Like any good thing, tidying can backfire and make us feel worse instead of better.<\/strong> How does this happen?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve already discussed that it\u2019s not a good idea to declutter on someone else\u2019s behalf. This can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">rifts in your relationship<\/a>. It can also be quite upsetting for a child it a parent throws out something they love, so do include children in the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s also not a good idea to get rid of things to impress others. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/codependency-symptoms-modern-times.htm\">Codependency<\/a> and decluttering are not a good mix. If something makes you feel great, then hold onto it, even if your new partner or friends don\u2019t approve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Decluttering can also backfire if you are using it as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">distraction technique<\/a>. If you are hoping it will help you stop noticing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leave-unhappy-relationship.htm\">your marriage is on the rocks,<\/a> or if you are using it to distract from the pressing<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\"> financial need<\/a> to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\"> find new employment<\/a>? It might end up causing you more instead of less<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> stress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s also not the best idea to declutter if you simply are not ready for it. If your kids have recently left home and you are still in the throes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/empty-nest-syndrome-how-to-manage.htm\">empty nest syndrome<\/a>, asking them to come by and empty their bedrooms with you might need to wait.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Take that tidying slowly<\/h2>\n<p><strong>And finally, be vary wary of biting off more than you chew when it comes to decluttering.\u00a0<\/strong>Yes, achieving goals is a way to feel good. But making a goal that is too big and does not follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\">&#8220;SMART&#8221; goal guidelines<\/a> is a direct route to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feel-like-a-failure.htm\"> feeling like a failure<\/a> and a great way to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\"> self-sabotage<\/a>.
