And there are even<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">different kinds of depression<\/a>. It&#8217;s free!]<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How to know if you are depressed &#8211; 9 questions to ask<\/h2>\n<p>So what is it you need to ask?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. How long have you been feeling low?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Is it only recently you&#8217;ve not felt yourself? Like in the last few weeks? And is this unusual for you, or are you constantly having ups and downs?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2028If you&#8217;ve only felt blue for a few weeks or more, it could be<\/strong> a bout of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-warning-signs-acute-stress-reaction-emotional-shock.htm\">emotional shock<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depression comes when we&#8217;ve not felt ourselves for<\/strong> around six weeks, or up to a lot longer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look at the big picture here if you tend to have ups and downs.\u00a0 <\/strong>If you have two or three weeks of feeling low each month, and it&#8217;s been going on for half the year, then you are really looking at a six-month period. <a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">It&#8217;s time to reach out for help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">[Know you are depressed, but scared to go to a therapist&#8217;s office? You are more likely just processing some sadness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depression actually affects our capacity to want to do things we usually like.<\/strong> Everything seems too much effort to be bothered.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Do you know what&#8217;s behind your moods?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Did you have a bad experience a few weeks ago, like a<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\"> redundancy<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">break up<\/a>, or a presentation gone wrong? You might be suffering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\">severe stress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The good thing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\">stress, unlike depression<\/a>, is that we can identify the issue and therefore take<\/strong> steps to fix it. We can get help with a new CV, spend time with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friends<\/a>, or take a course in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/performance-anxiety-help-guide.htm\">public speaking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">Depression<\/a>, on the other hand, can descend like a blinding fog. There were many things going on, and then suddenly we were just &#8216;in it&#8217;. We<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\"> feel helpless<\/a> against depression because we can rarely pinpoint the exact cause. So we don&#8217;t know where to start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-life-fast.htm\">making changes<\/a> (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/help-a-teen-with-depression.htm\">depression<\/a> robs us of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/no-motivation.htm\">motivation<\/a> to even try).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Note that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\">stress can, however, become depression<\/a> if we don&#8217;t deal with the stressor.<\/strong> So do seek support to make a plan forward.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. What tense is your mind living in?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>How to know if you are depressed? Note if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">your thoughts<\/a> are about the past,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> present<\/a>, or future.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you obsessed with something in the future, and unable to stop thinking about all the <\/strong>things that might go wrong? You are more likely to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">suffering anxiety than depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depression can blot out any hope for a future. Instead we obsess on the<\/strong> past. All the things that went wrong in our life, that we missed out on, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-fear-of-failure.htm\">all the ways we failed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Again, that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a>, a fear-based condition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depression is more likely to drown you in<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shame<\/a>. Shame can manifest as waves of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilt<\/a>, sadness, and even blasts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-anger.htm\">anger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Note that sometimes, with depression, you can find you are unable to feel at all, lost in what many depression sufferers refer to as &#8217;emotional numbness&#8217;.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. What are your physical symptoms?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">Muscle tension<\/a>, churning stomach, sweaty palms, heart palpitations? These are symptoms of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\"> stress or anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">So exhausted<\/a> everything seems a giant effort? Does your body feel made of sand or lead? Or do you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">feel flu-y all the time<\/a>, run down? Or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">disconnected from your body<\/a> entirely?\u00a0 These can be the physical symptoms of depression.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. And how is your sleep?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Are you sleeping so heavily you can&#8217;t get up when the alarm clock goes, and are suddenly prone to sleeping away your weekends? Or, are you sleeping in fits and starts, having bad dreams, waking up tired? Or unable to fall asleep at all? Depression tends to cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxiety also affects sleep. Either you can&#8217;t<\/strong> sleep at all as your mind is racing, or you wake up several times with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-at-night.htm\">night anxiety<\/a>, which feels like a half-asleep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic attack<\/a> in the dark.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. And your appetite?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Depression can mean we under or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">overeat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">9. It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\">stress<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you replaying a certain situation again and again, <\/strong>trying to get the facts right but feeling emotional?\u00a0Might just be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness<\/a> and a bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">emotional shock<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If your thoughts are all doom and gloom, <\/strong>then you might have depression.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">Negative thinking<\/a> is always present with depression, as are &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">cognitive distortions<\/a>&#8216;, where we make things worse than reality. Who are you thinking about?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Are you thinking about what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-deal-with-difficult-boss.htm\">your boss<\/a> thinks of you, and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleagues<\/a>, and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">family<\/a>? Wondering how they will react to what you do next? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">Anxiety<\/a>, always looking outward, has a hold on you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Do you think about yourself mostly, about all the things you do wrong, and the terrible things that you experienced? If you are thinking about others, is it about how you let them down, and how they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nobody-understands-me.htm\">can&#8217;t understand you<\/a>? This could be depression talking, an inward-looking condition.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">11. How&#8217;s your focus?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>When you try to work, does your <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">mind feel foggy<\/a>, blank, far away? Is it hard to get simple tasks done, partly as you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\"> can&#8217;t focus,<\/a> partly as you can&#8217;t find the desire to be bothered to focus?\u00a0Sounds like depression.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">Stress and anxiety<\/a>, on the other and, put us into the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">fight and flight mode<\/a>. Our cortisol levels surge and we can find that we are sharply over-focused, as if we are seeing in 3D.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">12. Do you feel understood?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Do you feel inclined to share the way you are feeling and thinking with friends and loved ones? Even find yourself over-explaining it?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">Anxiety can make us babble<\/a>. And we are more likely to share it, as we live in a society where anxiety and stress are fairly acceptable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depression can have to opposite effect. It goes back to the fact that<\/strong> depression is driven by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\"> shame<\/a>. And when we have shame, our instinct is to hide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even if we do gather our courage and share how bad we are feeling with a loved one, shame can cause us to be on the lookout for <\/strong>the tiniest glimmer of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-private-hell-of-rejection-why-does-it-keep-happening-to-you.htm\">rejection<\/a>. No matter how hard the other person tries, if we are depressed, we are likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nobody-understands-me.htm\">feel misunderstood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Will my depression just go away?<\/h2>\n<p>Depression doesn&#8217;t tend to vanish, even if we have a sudden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">change of life circumstance<\/a> for the positive. This is because depression is driven by unresolved past experiences that affect our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconscious<\/a> and colour our ability to enjoy good things.
