Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A feeling of fear is normal if we are faced with a real danger.<\/strong> If someone is threatening our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-hurt-the-ones-we-love.htm\">those we love<\/a>, it\u2019s normal to be afraid. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>But if your feeling of fear is triggered by day-to-day life, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-relationships-and-love.htm\">relationships<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress<\/a>? And ever since have had fear flood over you when reminded of it? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/a> is not limited to veterans. It can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-as-a-result-of-natural-disasters.htm\">overwhelming event<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">Symptoms of PTSD<\/a> include feeling on edge, moody, and anti-social, avoiding anything that reminds you of the event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">sleeplessness<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-new-eating-disorders.htm\"> changes to eating patterns<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\"> substance misuse<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Read more in our article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">&#8216;Emotional Shock vs PTSD<\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Childhood trauma <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Do you feel intensely fearful over strange things that you never tell anyone about? A stranger staring at you on public transport, someone asking you on a date, strangers trying to hug you?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">Childhood trauma<\/a>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-think-i-was-abused-as-a-child.htm\">child sexual abuse<\/a>, can leave you with a deep-rooted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">core belief<\/a> that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\"> the world is a dangerous place<\/a>. Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconscious mind<\/a> will constantly be on the lookout for danger in its effort to protect you from further<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trauma-therapy-what-works.htm\"> trauma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Anxious attachment disorder <\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_101694\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/35557485792_b8d1e7ced9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101694\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101694\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/35557485792_b8d1e7ced9-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"feeling of fear\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/35557485792_b8d1e7ced9-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/35557485792_b8d1e7ced9.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/35557485792_b8d1e7ced9-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-101694\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rankingfuuta\/35557485792\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Aaron Stidwell<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Do you not suffer from feelings of fear\u2026. until you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-anxiety.htm\">try to be in a relationship<\/a>? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And then suddenly, you are so anxious you can\u2019t sleep at night? <\/strong>You are biting your nails again, endlessly thinking about how perhaps you messed something up the last time you saw him or her? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Or you have serious<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">feelings of panic<\/a> if you don\u2019t know where they are? <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">Attachment theory<\/a><\/span> believes that to grow up into confident adults we need to have at least one caregiver as a child we can fully trust to be there for us, and love us no matter what. If for any reason that was compromised for you, you can end up with an attachment disorder, the most common of which is <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\">anxious attachment<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Phobias <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>Is your feeling of fear limited to a certain object or animal? A certain place, a situation itself that you are afraid of? Or even a feeling you don\u2019t want to ever have or you panic?<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Even if people tell you you are being silly about it, do you go out of your way to avoid that thing? <\/strong>And when you think about it, do you feel not just fearful, but terrified? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/phobias\/overview\/\">Phobias<\/a> are actually a kind of<\/strong> anxiety disorder. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">Social anxiety<\/a>, for example, is a kind of phobia &#8211; we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\">afraid of connection and intimacy<\/a>. We can learn phobias from our caregivers growing up, or they can be your unique way of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trauma-therapy-what-works.htm\">handling a past trauma<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>However we ended up with phobias, they are serious and can be increasingly debilitating<\/strong> if we don\u2019t seek help. They do respond well to treatment though, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> and, sometimes, exposure therapy. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Paranoia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Do you have fears that other people or organisations are out to get you? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We all sometimes are suspicious or afraid other people. Perhaps they remind us of<\/strong> someone from childhood who treated us poorly. Or perhaps they really are someone to be scared of, and have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-antisocial-personality-disorder.htm\">antisocial personality disorder<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But if your fear and suspicions are so big they haunt your every waking hour and<\/strong> keep you up at night, if others think you are being illogic, and if these fears come after a bout of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety, depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">drug use<\/a>, or a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> highly stressful experience<\/a>? Then you might be suffering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-paranoia.htm\">paranoia<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Borderline personality disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Do you have an intense feeling of fear if you think<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-private-hell-of-rejection-why-does-it-keep-happening-to-you.htm\"> a partner is going to reject or leave you<\/a>? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>To the point you are so terrified your body shakes, or you feel physically ill, or you have to self-harm to feel in control again? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">Borderline personality disorder<\/a> rotates around a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-abandonment.htm\">fear of being abandoned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Other personality disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Does your constant feeling of fear come from the way you see other people and the world, and have you felt that way since you were a young adult?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">Personality disorders<\/a> mean that we simply live life from an entirely<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"> different perspective<\/a> than other people tend to. The personality disorders that can have a feeling of fear as as symptom include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/avoidant-personality-disorder.htm\">avoidant personality disorder<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dependent-personality-disorder.htm\">dependent personality disorder<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-personality-disorder-2.htm\">obsessive compulsive personality disorder\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizotypal-personality-disorder.htm\">schizotypal personality disorder.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fear, or excitement? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">In a new job<\/a>, and feeling fearful all the time? You might be mistaking fear with excitement. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If we were raised in an environment where one of our caregivers was always saying they were \u2018afraid\u2019 of things, then we can take on this behaviour<\/strong>. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Instead of recognising that the rush of adrenaline before trying your first dance class, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-doubts.htm\">date with someone you like<\/a>, is just the excitement of pushing your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\"> boundaries<\/a> and trying something new? You decide you are afraid and back out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Of course some things, like bungee jumping or driving fast, do have a very real danger attached! So it becomes about asking<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\"> good questions<\/a>. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.susanjeffers.com\">Susan Jeffers&#8217; book, &#8220;Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway&#8221;<\/a>, is the classic to read here).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is the thing you are afraid of actually dangerous?
