Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is information overload, exactly?<\/strong> It means we have so much data coming at us that our brain does its best imitation of blowing a fuse.<\/p>\n<p><em>We suddenly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">can\u2019t think straight<\/a>, and can even forget what we were doing. Sound familiar?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Information overload in the digital age<\/h2>\n<p><em>How much overload are we talking when it comes to today\u2019s digital world? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to the Real Time Statistics Project, as of January this year, there are close to two <em>billion<\/em> websites on the internet. <\/strong>And we are also facing\u00a0175 million tweets every day, and 30 billion pieces of content shared monthly on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\"> Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you wanted to process all the digital data that exists? It would be like watching 200 billion movies. In HD.<\/strong> Oh wait. That was a statistic from seven years ago, so add some more films to the list\u2026 feeling overwhelmed yet?<\/p>\n<h2>Information overload in the workplace<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sure, it&#8217;s our choice to spend our evenings<\/strong> <strong>cruising the internet<\/strong> pretending we are looking for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/food-and-mood.htm\">healthy recipe<\/a> as we read the latest gossip on the Daily Mail, listen to a podcast, and answer texts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But we don&#8217;t have a choice if <\/strong>the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/impact-of-technology-in-the-workplace.htm\">modern workplace<\/a> puts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\">unrealistic expectations<\/a> on us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/multitasking-can-it-work.htm\">multitask<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/2014\/05\/20\/defyingdigitaldistr\/\">UK-based report by Microsoft<\/a> found that 55 per cent of British workers felt that information overload was an issue. They reported<span style=\"color: #666699;\"> <a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">feeling stressed<\/a><\/span>, and felt it was affecting their<span style=\"color: #666699;\"> <a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">[Feel your workplace is pushing you too hard? Check<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">social media<\/a> just once, then decide to glance ever so briefly a cute cat video? Until suddenly it&#8217;s five o&#8217;clock, and your day has passed yet again in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-case-study.htm\">haze of distraction<\/a>?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The primitive part of our brain responds not just to threats, but also to opportunities. So each time we respond to a modern day &#8216;opportunity&#8217; like, say, a text? It rewards us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Each time you change activities your brain responds with a<\/strong> feel-good dopamine hit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So yes, you could argue that information overloading can improve your moods. Except for the minor fact that it&#8217;s addictive.<\/strong> Each stimulating distraction adds dopamine, until you are on the addictive &#8216;dopamine loop&#8217;. The true danger of cat videos\u2026.<\/p>\n<h2>The negative effects of information overload<\/h2>\n<p>A reality check is needed when it comes to our addiction to information. What&#8217;s the real cost of information overload?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Cue memory loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anthony Wagner, professor of psychology at Stanford University, headed up a report that summarised over a decade of findings around media multitasking and cognition.<\/strong> One of his biggest conclusions? Those who often use many kinds of media at the same time achieved significantly poorer results on easy memory tasks.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">And Wagner drives the point home in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.internetlivestats.com\/total-number-of-websites\/\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"> an interview for &#8216;The Stanford Report<\/span><\/a>&#8216;<em>, <\/em>saying that, &#8216;There&#8217;s not a single published paper that shows shows a significan<em>t positive<\/em> relationship between working memory capacity and multitasking&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2. You become LESS efficient.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_101736\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4220648321_030122a994.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101736\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101736\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4220648321_030122a994-400x235.jpg\" alt=\"information overload and mental health\" width=\"400\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4220648321_030122a994-400x235.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4220648321_030122a994.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-101736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/barkbud\/4220648321\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">bark<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Psychology has long been fascinated by the effects of multitasking on the brain, with studies going as far back as the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the conclusion is always the same . We pay a price for multi-tasking, called the &#8216;switching cost&#8217;.\u00a0 And that price is time. <\/strong>The time to change attention and refocus, but also the time to correct mistakes, which we make more of when multi-tasking.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/research\/action\/multitask\">American Psychological Association (APA)<\/a> point out that, &#8220;Although switch costs may be relatively small, sometimes just a few tenths of a second per switch, they add up to large amounts when people switch repeatedly back and forth between tasks&#8230;.. as much as 40 per cent of someone&#8217;s productive time.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. You make bad decisions about important things.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Daniel J. Levitin, neuroscientist and author of the book, &#8220;The Organised Mind: Thinking Straight in the Age of Information Overload&#8221;,<\/strong> explains in his book that multitasking involves a lot of fast, little decisions. We decide if we are going to ignore or answer a text or email, what tone we&#8217;ll use in our response, if we&#8217;ll let ourselves be distracted by a silly video.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And these little decisions take a toll. &#8220;Decision making is hard on your neural resources, and little decisions appear to take up as much energy as big ones,&#8221; Levitin explains.&#8221;After making a lot of insignificant decisions, we can end up making truly bad decisions about something important.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Can information overload cause mental health issues?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\">Stress <\/a>is the obvious one.<\/strong> If you are already dealing with life stressors such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-after-divorce.htm\">divorce<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">debt<\/a>, the stress of information overload in the workplace might push you from just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">being stressed to having anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\">prone to anxiety<\/a>? Information overload can make things worse.<\/strong> Anxiety involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">distorted thinking<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/information-overload-mental-health.htm\">sees danger everywhere<\/a>, constantly triggering our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">&#8216;fight or flight&#8217; mode<\/a> and leaving us on the &#8216;cortisol rollercoaster&#8217; of highs and lows. Information overload has also been found to trigger cortisol, making any anxiety you already have that much worse.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">Self-esteem<\/a> can also be affected.<\/strong> Feel like everyone around you at work is so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">focussed<\/a> and capable, and you are the only one who can&#8217;t seem to cope? It&#8217;s bound to leave you feeling a little &#8216;less than&#8217;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">And if what you are overloading on in your spare time is social media, then you won&#8217;t be helping things. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">Studies show that the self-comparison that social media leads to<\/a>, even if we know better, directly affects our confidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Navigating info overload can particularly kill your confidence if <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">have adult ADHD.<\/a> The modern workplace can leave you feeling that your natural talents, say, brainstorming, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creativity<\/a>, and lateral thinking, are being drowned out in a need for data upkeep your brain isn&#8217;t designed to meet.<\/p>\n<p>All these things &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">anxiety, stress,<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\"> low self-esteem<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-case-study.htm\">adult ADHD<\/a> &#8212; can be contributing factors to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">case of depression<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/burnout-symptoms-treatment-tips.htm\">burnout<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">depression<\/a> and information overload can become a symbiotic relationship, if not a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/benefits-of-positive-thinking.htm\">positive<\/a> one. We overload on info as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">distraction<\/a> from depression, which can then leave us feeling worse instead of better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>How to handle information overload?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Aside from the obvious, if highly unpopular, idea of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/screen-time-recommendations.htm\">monitoring your screen time?<\/a> Or the logic notion of doing one thing at a time?
