Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The NHS estimates that 8% of us will have a phobia at some point in our lives.<\/strong> <em>But what is a phobia, exactly? And when it comes to fears and phobias, what is the difference? <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is a fear? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Fear might start in the mind.<\/strong> We don\u2019t like something. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But our experience of fear is largely physical<\/strong>. Our heart starts to pound wildly, our mouth goes dry, and adrenaline courses through us as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">\u2018fight, flight, or freeze\u2019 response<\/a> triggers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes a fear is pretty logic, sometimes not so much.<\/strong> Someone threatens us and our very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a> is at stake, that makes sense. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">to\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">fear a spider we are a thousand times bigger than, or a rat running away from us? Not so much.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>And modern day life causes all sorts of illogic fears.<\/strong> We are afraid to talk to strangers, to go on a date, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/performance-anxiety-help-guide.htm\">talk in public<\/a>, to try something new. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">But no matter whether our fear makes sense or not, we recognise it for what it is. The moment of fear arises, we experience it, and then it\u2019s over. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sure, we might tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">our friends<\/a> about it<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\"> over a drink<\/a> that night. And we might experience the same fear again the very next day, if it\u2019s around something ongoing like a work presentation. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">But fear is not in charge of our lives. We are in charge of our fear.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is a phobia? <\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Phobia is fear gone wild. Your fear becomes unmanageable. You might think about the thing you fear nonstop. And if you are ever faced with your phobia, the thing behind your terror? Your fear is<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Suddenly you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/decision-making-skills-mental-health.htm\">making decisions <\/a>based around your phobia. Your life is directly and negatively affected. You are going to great lengths to avoid the thing you are afraid of, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">feeling unable to cope<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #666699;\">[Is fear running your life? Did you know that you can stay at home and still get help? <a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">Book online therapist now<\/a> and they can help you with your phobia over the internet.]\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fear vs phobia <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So to recap, what generalisations can we make about differences?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">FEAR vs <em>PHOBIA<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>can be illogical and we are aware of it it <strong>vs.<\/strong> <em>can be very unrealistic, totally out of proportion to the danger, but doesn&#8217;t feel that way as the terror feels all too real<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">momentary and comes and goes <strong>vs.<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>haunting, we&#8217;ve suffered more than six months, and can seem to be constantly in our minds<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">manageable <strong>vs.<\/strong> <em>feels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">out of control <\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">doesn\u2019t affect our personality <strong>vs.<\/strong> <em>can make us so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-an-anxiety-attack.htm\">anxious<\/a> and paranoid we seem different<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">rarely has long term consequences<strong> vs.<\/strong> <em>can mean you make decisions that negatively affect your life. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fear, phobias, and anxiety <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Anxiety means we suffer from fear-based thinking. <\/strong>A phobia also sees our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">thoughts controlled by fear<\/a>. So often people with a phobia will<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\"> suffer anxiety<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">In fact anxiety and phobias produce the same physical symptoms, like:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> dizziness and lightheadedness<\/span><\/li>\n<li>sweating<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">heart palpitations<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\"><span class=\"s1\"> muscle tension<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">stomach issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In some situations a phobia can also be seen as<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/performance-anxiety-help-guide.htm\">an anxiety disorder<\/a>, particularly if it is a &#8216;complex phobia&#8217; (see below).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The different kinds of phobias<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_101845\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/32588800827_10d7d45420.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101845\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101845\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/32588800827_10d7d45420-400x270.jpg\" alt=\"fears and phobias\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/32588800827_10d7d45420-400x270.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/32588800827_10d7d45420.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-101845\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/fand_photography\/32588800827\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Fan D<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Phobias tend to be talked about as \u2018specific\u2019 or \u2018complex\u2019.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Specific phobias\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A specific phobia sees you terrified of one particular thing <\/strong>(it&#8217;s also sometimes called having a &#8216;simple phobia&#8217;.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0These types of phobias tend to come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">childhood<\/a> and can become less overwhelming with age. <\/strong>And you might not have to face your phobia often, so it might not be a huge part of your life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Specific phobias include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Animals<\/strong>: fear of rats, mice, spiders<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Situations:<\/strong> being afraid of the dentist, being on an airplane, or in an elevator<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Environments<\/strong>: fear of germs, fear of heights, fear of being immersed in water<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Bodily phobias:<\/strong> fear of things to do with your body, like having needles, vomiting, seeing your own blood, childbirth<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sexual:<\/strong> afraid of sex, of certain forms of sex, of sex with the lights on<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Other phobias:<\/strong> of fruit, or clowns, or a certain noise, really it can be anything.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Complex phobias\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Complex phobias develop when we are adults, and they tend to involve daily life and be far more debilitating.<\/strong> The two most known complex phobias are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">social phobia, also called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social anxiety disorder<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">agoraphobia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How do know if I need help for a phobia?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Worried you have a phobia, but not sure if that means you need help?<\/strong> Ask yourself some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">good questions<\/a>, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>am I aware I&#8217;m being irrational but I can&#8217;t stop feeling afraid?<\/li>\n<li>have I suffered this phobia for six months or longer?<\/li>\n<li>is it impacting my everyday life?<\/li>\n<li>am I avoiding doing certain things? Not being my usual self?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The good news about fears and phobias<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Phobias are actually highly treatable.
