Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes life can feel entirely stuck. <strong>And then someone \u2013 a friend, a colleague, or a therapist \u2013 asks us a certain question and just like that, a light turns on<\/strong>. Suddenly, everything seems possible again.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">How can that be? What about the right questions at the right time can can suddenly cause such a breakthrough?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Questions come in different forms<\/h2>\n<p>While all questions have the power to make us think, and they all have their place in life? <strong>If we are desperate to move forward or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reach a goal<\/span><\/a> that is important to us, there are good questions to ask <\/strong>that can be more helpful than others.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Learning to ask yourself better questions can see you finding your untapped wisdom you didn&#8217;t even realise you had. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The &#8216;why&#8217; spiral<\/h2>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Why&#8217; questions can be useful if you are soul searching or trying to understand yourself and life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But think about the last time someone asked you &#8216;why&#8217;. For example, a friend asking, &#8220;But why did you decide to take that career path?\u201d Or someone asking you something like, &#8220;Why do you always talk so much?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Did you have an instant answer? Or did you instead find yourself bluffing through a quick response then spending all night or several days going through many parts of your life, dissecting your personality, and <strong>perhaps feeling overwhelmed with all the thoughts and angles that come up? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why questions can leave us spinning, which is <strong>not great if you are feeling stuck or trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">get closer to a goal that is important to you.<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11401\" style=\"width: 442px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11401\" class=\"wp-image-11401 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6698208975_2e9d5c8344-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"good questions to ask\" width=\"432\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6698208975_2e9d5c8344-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6698208975_2e9d5c8344.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/editor\/6698208975\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">Bart Everson<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The other problem with &#8216;why&#8217; questions is that if we are asking them of ourselves<strong> they tend to be the very questions that our inner critic has a field day with<\/strong>. <strong>Most questions that involve judgement start with Why.<\/strong> \u201cWhy did you go do that again\u201d, \u201cwhy did you not think of that\u201d, \u201cwhy did not you not call him sooner\u201d, and on the list goes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In summary, Why questions tend to be:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reflective<\/li>\n<li>feeling and perspective over factual<\/li>\n<li>backwards looking<\/li>\n<li>can be negative if you aren&#8217;t careful<\/li>\n<li>powerful for self exploration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>&#8216;What&#8217; and &#8216;How&#8217; &#8211; The questions with kick<\/h2>\n<p>Some questions are faster acting. And they tend to begin with &#8216;What&#8217; and &#8216;How&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These questions have a kick because they require us to look at facts and ideas over feelings and judgements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could you do to improve today?\u201d \u201cHow could you get through this work faster?\u201d. Can you see how different these questions are to, \u201cWhy are you having yet another awful day?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, any question can be used negatively and to criticise. For example, asking &#8216;what is wrong with me&#8217; or &#8216;how can I be so stupid&#8217; is rarely helpful. <strong>Work to keep your questions forward moving and future looking.<\/strong> Ask instead, &#8216;what can I do to feel better about myself&#8217; and &#8216;how can I make better choices in life&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In summary, What and How questions tend to be:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>forward moving<\/li>\n<li>factual over feeling<\/li>\n<li>future looking<\/li>\n<li>often optimistic<\/li>\n<li>powerful for finding solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Turning whys into whats and hows<\/h2>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t stop asking yourself a &#8216;why&#8217; question and it&#8217;s haunting your days, give yourself some relief by turning your question into &#8216;hows&#8217; and &#8216;whats&#8217; and perhaps finding a foot forward. For example:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5005146417_4bd2529b9e_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5005146417_4bd2529b9e_z-265x199.jpg\" alt=\"Good questions to ask\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Why did I ruin that relationship?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>can become<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What about that relationship didn&#8217;t work for me<\/li>\n<li>What sort of thing can I do now to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dynamic-interpersonal-therapy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">make sure my relationships are better in the future<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>How can I choose a relationship that suits me better next time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Why did I mess up that presentation?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>can become<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What went right in that presentation<\/li>\n<li>How can I take what I learned from my mistakes to make the next presentation better<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Why did I eat three pieces of cake?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>can become<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/seven-things-stop-excercising-overcome.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What exercise can I do<\/span> <\/a>tomorrow to feel healthy again<\/li>\n<li>How can I work to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">make healthy eating choices<\/span> <\/a>in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Good questions to ask if you feel stuck in life<\/h2>\n<p>If you are trying to reach a goal but feel it will never happen, or feel like life won&#8217;t kick into gear, try bigger What and How questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can ask WHAT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0is it that I really want in this part of my life that I am not admitting to?<\/li>\n<li>am I afraid of losing out on that is keeping me stuck?<\/li>\n<li>is the worst thing that could happen if I achieved this goal?<\/li>\n<li>is actually going right that I am not acknowledging?<\/li>\n<li>could I make what I am doing easier on myself?<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And then ask HOW:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3108162671_a844189d31_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10815\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3108162671_a844189d31_z-235x199.jpg\" alt=\"Good questions to ask\" width=\"400\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>could I find more support in reaching this goal?<\/li>\n<li>can I find other choices that I have missed?<\/li>\n<li>could I\u00a0 create more space in my life to commit to this goal?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How not to upset others with questions<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Do you often find that when you are debating with others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ten-tips-for-anger-management-in-relationships.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">things end up in conflict<\/span><\/a>?<\/strong> It might be that you are making others feel judged with too many &#8216;why&#8217; questions.<\/p>\n<p>As discussed above, why is an easy way to beat yourself up. Likewise,<strong> even if you don&#8217;t intend to imply anything negative, why questions are the ones that most often trigger the inner critic of others, leaving them defensive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Questions like &#8216;why did you do that&#8217;, &#8216;and &#8216;why don&#8217;t you do this instead&#8217; <strong>can also leave the other person feeling judged.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So next time you are curious about someone else&#8217;s actions, try some what or how questions instead. \u201cWhat was it that inspired you to take that action&#8221;, or &#8220;How else might you want to do this?\u201d might illicit better responses.<\/p>\n<h2>So all you need to know about good questions is&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p><strong>&#8216;How&#8217; and &#8216;What&#8217; questions are great questions to move forward<\/strong> and help us take action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Why&#8217; questions are very important when we need to understand ourselves<\/strong> and allow us to dive deeply into our thoughts and feelings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And &#8216;Who&#8217; questions can be some of the most powerful of all<\/strong>.
