Who are you, really?<\/p>\n<h2>How to Discover Yourself<\/h2>\n<p><em>If you are looking for a quick solution to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity crisis<\/a>, it\u2019s important to take some things into consideration.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1.If you are a teenager, cut yourself some slack.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\">brain is actually still growing when you are a teen<\/a>. And, according to models of healthy human development, you are <em>supposed<\/em> to be questioning your identity. Psychologist Erick Erickson, famed for his &#8216;Stages of Psychosocial Development&#8217;, called our teen years the &#8220;Identity vs Role Confusion&#8221; stage.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2 A totally solid, never changing identity is not the right goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The idea that you will figure out who you are and never change might seem like the answer to all your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a>. But a healthy human is always learning. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">Values<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personality-disorder-vs-personality-trait.htm\">personality traits<\/a> remain the same. But sometimes we change our minds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">expand our perspectives<\/a>, and, hopefully, become better people.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Some of us are naturally more flexible with our identity than others.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some people just seem born with a simpler personality then others. Your clothes, music tastes, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/characteristics-of-aspergers.htm\">social circles<\/a> might be a side product of your identity, <em>but they can&#8217;t actually determine who you are.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Identify your personal values.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If there was ONE thing that is the key to identity, it would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values.<\/a>These are the things that are so intrinsically important to us, we prioritise them without realising.<\/p>\n<p>When<strong> we take the time to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">identify our own values<\/a> and choose a life in line with them, we feel ourselves at last.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The trouble comes if we try instead to live out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/family-gathering-tips.htm\">our parents<\/a>&#8216; value system, or those of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">our peer group<\/a>. We suddenly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">feel tired<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">confused<\/a>, and lost.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A classic example here<\/strong> <strong>is the<\/strong> banker from a big family who packs it all in to work for a charity and suddenly finds happiness. But it could also be the reverse. If your family values charity above all else but deep down you value success, taking a job in banking might feel a relief.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Find the feel good.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">One way to get closer to your real identity is to get honest about what actually brings you a satisfied, good feeling in life &#8211; your &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing activities<\/a>&#8216;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you \u2018think\u2019 you are supposed to like shopping and travelling, because your friends do, and it looks good on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">social media<\/a>? But deep down you feel happiest at home with a cup of tea reading about science and philosophy? What would it feel like to start doing that instead?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Meet people on purpose.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sometimes we are struggling to be ourselves as we are under the illusion we have to stay best friends with the same people our entire lives.<\/strong> This is unrealistic. People change with age, and sometimes we need to \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">let go and grow<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Simply letting ourselves be around different people who don\u2019t have a \u2018history book\u2019 of all the things we have ever done can liberate us to realise who we now are. And it means we can <span style=\"color: #800080;\">choose new friends<\/span> we share values with, around whom we can be ourselves more easily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Miller<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Ever wondered if your real self was being controlled somehow? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">Core beliefs<\/a> are the assumptions we make growing up that we then mistake as fact. They hide out in our unconscious and tend to drive every decision we make.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, if something happened to you as a child you had<\/strong> no control over and that terrified you? You can have the core belief &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">the world is a dangerous place&#8217;<\/a> &#8212; even if you live in a safe, wealthy country and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">never witness violence<\/a>. This fear-driven belief can stop you from interacting with the people and opportunities that could let your real self shine.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Learn balanced thinking.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Is your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">thinking very black and white<\/a>? And you are always imaging the worse? These kinds of thinking are called \u2018cognitive distortions\u2019 in psychology, because they warp reality.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And if we are addicted to <span style=\"color: #800080;\">negative thinking<\/span> it can control our choices and actions, meaning we are not being ourselves.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy<\/a> (CBT) is a popular form of therapy that focuses on helping you identify and change this kind of unhelpful thinking. Try advanced journalling.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yes, as children a journal is where we record daily events.
