We feel frustrated, and can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-anger.htm\">angry<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Everyday anxiety\u2019 is often really a form of stress.<\/strong> Something has happened in life that has us worried all the time. This might be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\"> losing our job<\/a>, a big presentation, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">life change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxiety, however, is more vague in its cause. We suddenly feel<\/strong> scared about our future, and our thoughts become increasingly illogic. If we think what we think we are anxious about, we then just feel anxious about something else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Once we are in a state of anxiety, we can<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">overreact to everything<\/a>. We start off upset about something in particular, but then we find we are worried about everything, and not just frustrated but fearful. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_136068\" style=\"width: 372px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136068\" class=\" wp-image-136068\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-5542968-1-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"signs of anxiety\" width=\"362\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-5542968-1-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-5542968-1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-5542968-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-5542968-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-136068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Rodnae production for Pexels<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>This can happen if we are faced with too many stressors at once.<\/strong> For example, if we<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\"> lose a loved one<\/a> and have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/lwren-scott-debt-depression.htm\">financial crisis<\/a> at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But in general, this happens because we were already prone to anxiety.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Signs of anxiety and anxiety disorder<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The symptoms of anxiety and anxiety disorder are the same. The difference is in <\/strong>how long you experience the symptoms, and in their severity. And many of these symptoms also are seen in cases of severe stress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxiety symptoms can be divided into categories:<\/strong> mental symptoms, emotional symptoms, and physical symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental symptoms can include things like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>obsessive and increasingly illogic thinking<\/li>\n<li>a feeling like your mind is on overdrive, troubleshooting everything<\/li>\n<li>always thinking of the future and how you can control it<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking:<\/a>\u00a0exaggerated, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">black and white<\/a>, doom and gloom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Emotional symptoms can include things like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>mood swings, such as sadness and anger<\/li>\n<li>feeling on edge all the time<\/li>\n<li>overreacting to things.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Physical signs of anxiety can include things like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>jumpiness<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">changes to eating patterns<\/a><\/li>\n<li>panic attack that cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">racing heart, sweatiness, dizziness<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">muscle tension<\/a>, headaches, stomach upset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more about anxiety symptoms, read our &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/generalised-anxiety-panic-disorder-help-guide.htm\">Guide to Generalised Anxiety and Panic Disorders<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<h2>The roots of anxiety and anxiety disorder<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_107950\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9466335988_3b787f4f99-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107950\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-107950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9466335988_3b787f4f99-1-268x400.jpg\" alt=\"signs of anxiety\" width=\"268\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9466335988_3b787f4f99-1-268x400.jpg 268w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/9466335988_3b787f4f99-1.jpg 335w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-107950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/afsusa\/9466335988\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">AFS-USA Intercultural Programs<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Again, anxiety can happen if the stress in your present day life <\/strong>becomes so out of control it\u2019s beyond the realm of human coping.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And anxiety can be a symptom of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">PTSD<\/a> triggered by a devastating experience. <\/strong>This includes things like your house burning down, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\">watching someone you love die<\/a>, being the victim of crime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-as-a-result-of-natural-disasters.htm\">living through natural disaster<\/a>\u00a0or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-terrorism-on-society.htm\"> terrorism<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But in most cases, anxiety doesn\u2019t just descend out of nowhere. It tends to be a mix of environmental and genetic factors that leave us anxious adults.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Childhood causes for anxiety and anxiety disorder<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Childhood is a key factor behind most cases of anxiety.<\/strong> It could be that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> left you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">believing the world is a dangerous place<\/a> and living with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">complex PTSD<\/a>, with anxiety as a key symptom. Or you might have experienced unstable environments as a child, like poverty, or a sick parent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometimes it\u2019s the way we were parented that left us with an anxious personality.<\/strong> It could be that you had an anxious parent and learned to respond to stress by overthinking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We might not have received enough<\/strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">attachment<\/a>\u2019, meaning there was not an adult we could trust to be a safe, loving and reliable go-to. We end up with \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\">anxious attachment disorder<\/a>\u2019, meaning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-relationships-and-love.htm\">relationships cause us great stress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, some people do seem to be born more prone to anxiety than others<\/strong>. We can have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-oversensitive.htm\">sensitive personality<\/a>. And some research shows anxiety might be genetic.<\/p>\n<h2>Anxiety or signs of anxiety disorder?<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">So when does anxiety become a disorder? When anxiety is controlling your life, and has been doing so for at least a few months.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Most people whose anxiety is based on<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\"> unresolved childhood issues<\/a> will have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/generalised-anxiety-panic-disorder-help-guide.htm\">generalised anxiety disorder<\/a>. Life will be affected on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">daily basis by anxiety<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/decision-making-skills-mental-health.htm\">Decision making<\/a> is driven by trying to avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">feelings of fear<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If we have done <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\">therapy for our anxiety<\/a>, however, and know how to control it when it gets triggered?<\/strong> Then we can start to experience anxiety in a way that is no longer a disorder as it is not controlling us. We are controlling our anxiety.<\/p>\n<h2>The different types of anxiety disorder<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Anxiety disorder can manifest differently for different people<\/strong>. There are many types of anxiety disorder, with the most common ones being:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/generalised-anxiety-panic-disorder-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Generalised anxiety disorder<\/span><\/a>:<\/strong> you are anxious all the time, you make decisions based around your anxious thoughts and fear, and it\u2019s been going on for several months or a lot longer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Social anxiety disorder<\/span><\/a>:<\/strong> Your anxiety triggers when you have to interact with others. The more anxious you are, the less you go out of the house.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Obsessive compulsive disorder<\/span><\/a>:<\/strong> Your anxiety leads you to compulsions and repeat behaviours.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/span><\/a>:<\/strong> this is really a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-does-a-traumatic-experience-do-to-your-body-and-brain.htm\"> trauma<\/a> disorder, where you have experienced one or several overwhelming experiences. But anxiety is a main symptom.<\/p>\n<h2>When is it time to seek help?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">Life throws curve balls<\/a>. So we all at some point feel overwhelmed and anxious.
