But then someone close to you has suggested you actually have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anger-management-help-guide.htm\">anger issues<\/a>? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What are Anger Issues?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Anger issues do not necessarily mean you are always flying off the hook a<\/strong>nd <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stop-self-sabotaging-behaviour.htm\">sabotaging your life<\/a> with fits of rage.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Anger issues mean that we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-repressed-emotions.htm\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">not able to express our emotions<\/span><\/a>, opinions, and responses in a healthy way. You aren&#8217;t angry, you are just irritable. Often.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s easy to tell ourselves we aren\u2019t the angry sort if we never yell or even raise our voice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But if you are constantly speaking to others in an irritable way, or<\/strong>, worse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dangers-criticism-realise.htm\">criticising others<\/a> because of your irritability? Then you are probably sitting on a lot of unresolved anger that\u2019s killing off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">your compassion<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. You are never angry. In fact you never have many emotions at all. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Are you the apparently \u2018easy going\u2019 type? Who goes along with<\/strong> what others want to do, and when asked if you mind, just shrug and say, \u2018I\u2019m not fussed\u2019? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But then are you also the sort who, when asked how you feel, just feel a giant, well\u2026 blank?<\/strong> Do you not<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\"> feel sad<\/a>, but not that happy either? <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">If we grew up in a household where we<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\"> had to be a pleasing child<\/a><\/span> to get by, then we can be so used to not having feelings or showing opinions we mistake this \u2018laid\u2019 back version of ourselves for the real thing. Buried deep inside we hide a rage that we were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-so-unloveable.htm\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">never loved as we were<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. You never cry. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When we repress anger, we repress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\">sadness<\/a>. When you go to therapy you can find you first go through weeks of crying before you reach your anger. Alternately, with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-and-personality-disorders.htm\"> those who are quick to anger<\/a> and rage, therapy can see them go from anger to tears. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">The roots of what we are furious about &#8211; being belittled or <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">traumatised as a child<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">,<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-private-hell-of-rejection-why-does-it-keep-happening-to-you.htm\"> being rejected<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\"> or <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/abandonment-issues.htm\">abandoned<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">, or <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-not-good-enough.htm\">made to feel not good enough<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\"> &#8211; are also the roots of what we need to<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/losing-something-you-love.htm\"> mourn<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. On the rare occasions you are mad, it\u2019s big and embarrassing. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Are you known for an embarrassing once yearly blowout? <\/strong>But it\u2019s usually in private with someone close to you, so you maintain your \u2018nice person\u2019 persona? <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Think of a giant beach ball. And it\u2019s your job to keep it under water. It takes a lot of focus. Occasionally, despite best effort, the beach ball pops up. Repressed anger can be like that. Sure, it only pops above the surface for a second. But note that ball is big, not small. It\u2019s an issue, no matter how fast we hide it again. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-107988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/anger-facts-220x400.png\" alt=\"anger issues\" width=\"220\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/anger-facts-220x400.png 220w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/anger-facts-330x600.png 330w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/anger-facts.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>5. You are scattered and can never think straight.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Going back to that beach ball &#8211; think of all the concentration it takes to keep it under water.<\/strong> You can\u2019t look around. You have to keep your \u2018eye on the ball\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Keeping our emotions repressed is similar.<\/strong> <strong>It doesn\u2019t leave us with enough<\/strong> \u2018brain juice\u2019 to keep everything else organised. This is why unresolved trauma can be linked to, or wrongly diagnosed as, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">adult ADHD. <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. You feel numb often &#8211; friends say you are depressed. <\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Western society we\u2019ve created a strange system of making some emotions \u2018good\u2019 and others \u2018bad\u2019. It&#8217;s a false and unhelpful approach, creating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shame<\/a> that leads us to hide our so-called \u2018bad\u2019 emotions. The end result is often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">depression<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We are afraid if we let ourselves be angry our rage will overwhelm us. But if we learn to<\/strong> accept our emotions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/first-therapy-session-what-happens.htm\">the safe environment of the therapy room<\/a>, instead of rage we learn to express healthy anger and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\"> set boundaries<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. You\u2019ve been told more than once you overreact to things. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">You don\u2019t get angry per se but do get very \u2018upset\u2019 about things, like, a neighbour walking by you without saying hi, the bus being late\u2026. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When we repress emotions they can leak out via behaviours like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\"> constantly overreacting<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">8. You secretly have weird dreams or fantasies about killing people. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This does not mean you are a bad person. Thoughts are not actions, and most people who have such thoughts were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">victim of a trauma<\/a>. Violent fantasies are a way to process your repressed rage, and it&#8217;s more common than you think. But it does mean it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\">time to seek support<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">9. You are a super nice person. For some people it\u2019s actually<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\"> physical pain<\/a>, but for must of us, addictions are used to avoid emotional pain. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">The more we use, the less we feel. And when the high wears off, there\u2019s our rage, wanting to be heard. So we pour another glass\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">10. You are tired all the time, and doctors cant\u2019 find anything wrong. You might also have constant flus and colds. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Again, repressing emotions is a full-time job. And for some people it can translate as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-and-depression.htm\">physical fatigue<\/a>, which can wear down the immune system over time. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">11. You have muscle tension in your jaw and shoulders, and often have headaches<\/span>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These are common ways for repressed anger to manifest in the body.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s part of why, if we do get angry, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">feel so tired<\/a> and relaxed after &#8211; we\u2019ve actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">let our body tension go<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">12. You overeat, and have long had issues with your weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">Overeating<\/a> is an addiction, albeit one of the most socially acceptable ones. And it&#8217;s main purpose is to numb out our emotions, including, and often, anger.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">We can claim we overeat as we are &#8216;bored&#8217;, but what is boredom, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic<\/a> that if we have nothing to do, our true thoughts and feelings might break through?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This is why dieting often doesn&#8217;t work. It doesn&#8217;t address navigating the <\/strong>irritability that breaks through when we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-food.htm\">stop overeating<\/a>.
