And you are wondering if it\u2019s because of a learning difficulty? Or is it you yourself who is struggling? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is a learning difficulty?<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">A learning difficulty is neurological. Your brain takes in and processes information differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The ways of learning that are prioritised in our modern world don\u2019t match<\/strong> the way you yourself learn, and you end up struggling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Learning difficulties don\u2019t mean you have a low IQ. <\/strong>Most people with learning difficulties have normal or above normal IQ results and can do quite well in school, except for in one or two areas. They might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creative<\/a> and good at comprehension, finding ways to get by despite their challenges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Because of this, you can have learning difficulties and not even realise it<\/strong>, instead calling yourself &#8216;lazy&#8217; or &#8216;different&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>[Exhausted by your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/conflicting-parenting-styles.htm\">parenting struggles<\/a>? Feel like there is nobody who understands your frustrations? Consider<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\"> talking to an online therapist<\/a> <\/span>who gets it, and provides the support you need.]\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Learning difficulty vs learning disability<\/h2>\n<p><strong>In America, what is seen as a &#8216;learning difficulty&#8217; here in the UK, like, say, dyslexia,<\/strong> can still be called a &#8216;disability&#8217; or an &#8216;intellectual disability&#8217; instead.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Even in the UK you&#8217;ll find varying definitions. This is due to a growing understanding of learning challenges and to the politics around terminology. There is a move towards dropping the term &#8216;difficulty&#8217; altogether in favour of &#8216;differences&#8217;, and many educational psychotherapists here use the term, <strong>&#8216;specific learning difference&#8217;, or &#8216;SpLD&#8217;<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>But in general the difference between &#8216;disability&#8217; and &#8216;difficulty&#8217; is still seen as one of intellect and coping.<\/strong> If it&#8217;s a learning difficulty, you might struggle, but you can still cope and have an independent life. A learning disability affects intellect to the point you can&#8217;t manage independently but need support for your day-to-day life.<\/p>\n<p><em>**Note that the British Royal College of Psychiatrists, however, uses learning disabilities the same as above, but calls learning differences and difficulties &#8220;specific learning disabilities&#8217;.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Do only children have learning difficulties?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_108281\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108281\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-108281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2083211662_f16e44b30b-400x301.jpg\" alt=\"types of learning disability\" width=\"400\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2083211662_f16e44b30b-400x301.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2083211662_f16e44b30b.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-108281\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/komunews\/2083211662\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">KOMUnews<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Recognition and support for many learning disorders is modern, and for many just was not available when they were at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/back-to-school-blues-parents.htm\">school<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Were you seen as a &#8216;problem child&#8217;, or written off as &#8216;different&#8217; because of a &#8216;high IQ&#8217;? <\/strong>If you\u00a0 struggle with reading, writing, or maths as an adult, you might have an unrecognised learning difficulty and can still get tested.<\/p>\n<h2>Further signs of a learning difficulty<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Further signs of an adult with a learning difficulty can include <\/strong>that you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>see yourself as a bit stupid, not as good as others, flawed, or &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">just the creative type<\/a>&#8216;<\/li>\n<li>never study new things because you&#8217;ve decided learning is &#8216;boring&#8217;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">manage<\/span> to read and write but are clumsy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">not good at talking<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">are told you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">have potential but then you never seem to reach it<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feel like your mind lets you down sometimes and you have memory difficulties<\/span><\/li>\n<li>find staying organised impossible, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/need-more-time.htm\">you are always late<\/a><\/li>\n<li>have sensitive senses &#8211; you can&#8217;t block things out or get &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-oversensitive.htm\">sensory overwhelm<\/a>&#8216;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">struggle in the workplace<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">suffer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">anxiety and stress<\/a> when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">banking<\/a> or having to fill out forms\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/assumptions-in-relationships.htm\">issues in relationships<\/a> because you come across as &#8216;different&#8217; despite best efforts to fit in.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The different types of learning difficulties<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Note that you might feel you or your child match more than one of the following learning difficulties.<\/strong> It&#8217;s actually common to have several learning difficulties co-existing together.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Dyslexia. <\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_108284\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108284\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-108284\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/30637426472_4cd6a29e58-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"types of learning difficulties\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/30637426472_4cd6a29e58-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/30637426472_4cd6a29e58.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-108284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/londonmatt\/30637426472\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Matt Brown<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The most known learning difficulty, it&#8217;s also the most common. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningdisabilities.org.uk\/learning-disabilities\/a-to-z\/l\/learning-difficulties\">The UK&#8217;s Mental Health Foundation<\/a> estimates it affects 10% of the population. It tends to run in families.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">Dyslexia is not just about struggling with reading &#8211; it affects the speed at which you receive and store information. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>So yes, you might find words jumble on a page and you reverse letters, but you might also <\/strong>be bad at directions, and not be good at ordering your ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Note that dyslexia can be different for one person than another. For example<\/strong>, one person might find reading near impossible, but can memorise easily. Another might find they can guess their way through texts fairly well, but can\u2019t remember well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Dyscalculia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Do you struggle with maths, symbols,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">dealing with money<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/need-more-time.htm\">making sense of time<\/a> and scheduling? Did you have a hard time learning how to read time on analog clocks? Sometimes grouped under dyslexia, dyscalculia is also called &#8216;number blindness&#8217; as it means you struggle with anything to do with counting or quantities.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Dysgraphia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This learning difficulty affects the connection between language and motor skills. Sufferers find handwriting hard, might use odd spacing when they write, and might be poor spellers. Trying to think and write at the same time can cause overwhelm.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Closely related developmental disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Looking for a learning difficulty that isn&#8217;t on the list above? The following are often lumped in as &#8216;learning difficulties&#8217; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>but are actually, according to clinical definition, closely related developmental disorders.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Dyspraxia.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong> It tends to comes hand-in-hand with<\/strong> dyslexia, as well as being connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adhd-in-children-should-you-be-concerned.htm\">ADHD<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-aspergers-in-adults.htm\">Asperger&#8217;s syndrome<\/a>. And because it can make educational activities a challenge it&#8217;s mistaken as a learning difficulty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But dyspraxia is developmental disorder that affects<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">muscle control<\/a> &#8211; in fact its other name is &#8216;development co-ordination disorder&#8217; or DCD. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Children with dyspraxia have<\/strong> poor coordination and spatial awareness, including poor hand-eye coordination and troubles discerning left and right. They can sometimes even struggle with speaking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This can all translate into things like<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">concentration issues<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">emotional problems,<\/a> and struggles to plan things and be organised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">ADHD<\/a> is now understood to not always involve hyperactivity.<\/strong> While all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adhd-in-children-should-you-be-concerned.htm\">children with ADHD<\/a> struggle to control behaviour, have attention issues, and can be restless and unpredictable? In some children, particularly girls, hyperactivity is replaced by dreaminess and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">spacing out\u2019<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\"> adult ADHD<\/a> the strongest symptoms are<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">lack of focus<\/a> and an inability to commit to things and finish them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Autism. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because autism affects a child\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">communication<\/a> and behaviour skills, learning is often greatly impacted. And it often is found side-by-side other learning disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note that some children who aren&#8217;t talkative outside of the home<\/strong> could be misdiagnosed as being on the spectrum when really it&#8217;s an anxiety disorder called<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-selective-mutism.htm\"> selective mutism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning difficulties not officially diagnosed in the UK<\/h2>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Sure your child has a specific learning difficulty you&#8217;ve read about on the internet, but can&#8217;t find a place in the UK to get a diagnosis? Unfortunately the UK does not use the same diagnostic manual as America and diagnoses differently.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Auditory processing disorder.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>APD is not a hearing &#8216;impairment&#8217; as hearing is normal &#8211; it&#8217;s just that the brain interprets sound differently.<\/strong> A child with APD might struggle to hear differences in words, not seem to enjoy music like other kids, and be unable to concentrate if there is a lot of background noise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s1\">Here in the UK auditory processing disorder is classed by the NHS as a <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>&#8216;hearing problem&#8217;.\u00a0 Elsewhere you will see it referred to as a &#8216;processing difficulty&#8217; or &#8216;processing deficit&#8217;.<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"s1\">This said, it does mean your child is seen as having special educational needs and you will be able to access support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If auditory processing seems to only affect language, then it can also sometimes be referred to as &#8216;language processing disorder&#8217;.\u00a0 <\/strong>This can look like a child who struggles to understand what is read to them, gets frustrated trying to explain their ideas verbally, but can easily draw out what they want to describe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Non-verbal learning difficulties.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">&#8216;NVLD&#8217; still tends to be seen as a lesser known part of <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">the autism spectrum here in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong> Does your child get by in school as he or she is good at explaining things and at talking? But are there all sorts of other issues related to co-ordination?<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Is he or she clumsy, do they struggle with manual tasks like shoe tying and using scissors,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>or following a set of instructions? And do they not seem to be able to read other people\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-power-of-body-language.htm\"> body language<\/a>? They might have a non-verbal learning difficulty.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Suspect it&#8217;s a learning difficulty?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If you or your child have the signs of a learning difficulty then it&#8217;s best to seek the advice of a professional.<\/strong> You can start by speaking to your GP, or in the case of a child, his teacher or school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can also book a session with an<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-educational-psychologist.htm\">educational psychologist<\/a> privately.
