A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.co.uk\/press-room\/press-releases\/One-in-three-UK-employees-are-working-with-anxiety-depression-or-stress-according-to-new-PwC-research.html\">recent survey by PwC<\/a> found <strong>over a third of British employees now report<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">stress<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression, and anxiety<\/a> at work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Is it time you took your mental health at work seriously?\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mental health in the workplace &#8211; why does it matter? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The average UK employee spends over<\/strong> 1,700 hours a year at work. I<\/span><span class=\"s1\">f we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\">unhappy in the workplace<\/a>, it tends to then affect our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">family life<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">social life<\/a>, and even our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\"> physical health<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>At worse, it can lead to a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-nervous-breakdown.htm\">nervous breakdown<\/a>. But saying yes to <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">your colleague<\/a> who always wants you to cover for them, yes to the office moaner who fills up your breaks with gossip, or yes to endless <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">after work drinks<\/a> when you actually want to get home and rest? Not so great. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Knowing how to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">set and stick to boundaries<\/a> means we gain<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/need-more-time.htm\"> time<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">energy<\/a>, and, ultimately, other people&#8217;s respect. If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">find saying no hard<\/a>, see it as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">goal to work towards<\/a> in steps, keeping a record of your wins to inspire you. Each time you say no to someone else, you say yes to yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Drop perfectionism.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Aim for some<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"> perspective<\/a> here. Everyone makes mistakes, and sometimes it&#8217;s better to get things done on time than to let<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-a-perfectionist.htm\"> perfectionism<\/a> ruin things.<\/p>\n<p>If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/perfectionism-helping-or-harming.htm\">struggle with perfectionism<\/a>, it can be a sign of bigger issues. Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">talking to a coach<\/a> to see what drives your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-fear-of-failure.htm\"> fear of making mistakes.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. It actually leads to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/procrastination-big-deal.htm\">better productivity<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-case-study.htm\">more focussed<\/a> work. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">And enforcing your legal rights to breaks and holidays lets colleagues and bosses know that you value yourself and <span style=\"color: #333399;\">practise self-care.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>They are less likely to then turn to you to clean up<\/strong> their messes, or be the one who stays late to do overtime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Another tip here is to take hourly \u2018mental breaks\u2019 b<\/strong>y<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\"> practising mindfulness<\/a>.<\/span> It\u2019s shown by research to do wonders for <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress<\/a>.<\/span> Even just<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-de-stress-mindfulness-relaxation-break.htm\"> a few minutes of deep breathing<\/a> <\/span>and<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> now-moment awareness<\/a> <\/span>each hour can <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-an-anxiety-attack.htm\">reduce anxiety<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. It&#8217;s now proven that<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">exercise improves your moods.<\/a> As does time spent in nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>No matter how lazy you feel, pushing yourself to leave the office at lunch, walking<\/strong> the long way to the cafe, and sitting in a park to eat your sandwich? Or walking around the block on your break? It will have a <\/span><span class=\"s1\">positive knock-on affect for the second half of your workday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Have a life outside the office, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Maintaining interests, hobbies, and <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">good relationships<\/a><\/span> outside of work means that when <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">workplace stress<\/a><\/span> hits we don&#8217;t lose ourselves to it. And when retirement comes we don&#8217;t <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">have a crisis<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If your job is taking up so much time you feel it&#8217;s not possible to have any sort of life otherwise?<\/strong> Then it&#8217;s time to look at your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-balance-tips-have-you-tried-this.htm\">work-life balance<\/a> and make a long-term plan.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Don\u2019t keep it to yourself. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Pretending we are managing when we aren\u2019t tends to backfire. We end up<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/performance-anxiety-help-guide.htm\">doing a poor job of a presentation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-issues-signs.htm\">exploding on another colleague<\/a>, or walking out of a meeting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The thing to be cautious of here is <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/handling-depression-stigma.htm\">sharing our stress and anxiety with the wrong people.<\/a> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleague<\/a> who gossips can make things worse. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friendship-and-love.htm\">A\u00a0friend<\/a> outside the workplace is a better bet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Also be wary of expecting one other person to always be your &#8216;go to&#8217; when you are upset. It is a lot to<\/strong> ask of someone and can seriously<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\"> strain relationships<\/a>. If you don\u2019t have a circle of support, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">counselling<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">If too much is being asked of you in the workplace, speak up to the appropriate channels. Using <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">calm, non-violent communication<\/a><\/span>, explain to your manager or HR why you feel overwhelmed or how you feel your job description has been overstepped, and outline what you think would be helpful solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Stop workplace bullying in its tracks.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It doesn\u2019t matter if it is another colleague or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-my-boss-a-sociopath.htm\">your boss<\/a>. <strong>If you are in any way being belittled, harassed, or tormented, speak to<\/strong> human resources. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-bullying.htm\">Workplace bullying<\/a> is a serious issue and needs to be treated as such.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">8. Learn the steps to wellbeing and apply them.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Wellbeing is not just a buzz word, it\u2019s an art form and a science proven to help. Psychologists have even created a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\">wellbeing test<\/a> you can take. Use the mental health services your workplace offers.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Ignored the free courses on<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\"> mindfulness<\/a> offered by HR? Not bothered with the mental health check each employee is entitled to at your workplace?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Mental health is as important as physical health, and a bit of prevention goes a long way. Just like you exercise and take vitamins for health, see mental health services as time well spent for the long-run.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">10. Be honest if it really is your workplace that is the issue. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Complaining about the workplace is socially acceptable. Far more socially acceptable, sadly, then admitting<\/strong> our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leave-unhappy-relationship.htm\"> marriage is a shambles<\/a>, we are worried we are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindful-parenting.htm\">bad parent<\/a>, or that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\"> debt problems<\/a> are keeping us up at night. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So it\u2019s actually common that endlessly complaining about our jobs can be a way to hide the real issues in our lives<\/strong>. But if there are other issues, no amount of promotions or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\"> career change<\/a> is going to make you feel better. You need to face up to what is really bothering you, and seek the support you need to find a working solution. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">11. Get proper support. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Most workplaces provide insurance for<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">counselling and psychotherapy<\/a>, which can do wonders for workplace stress.
