Or are you considering IVF, and wondering how you can prepare in advance for the emotional and mental challenges ahead?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Anxiety and stress &#8211; key factors in why IVF cycles don&#8217;t take? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Research is actually on the fence over whether emotional distress physically lowers<\/strong> pregnancy success rates from IVF.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are many small scale studies that connect stress to negative results with IVF, such as<\/strong> an<span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3662783\/\">\u00a0American study<\/a> which measured stress and anxiety at five different points of the IVF cycle. It concluded that \u201cwomen with lower stress and anxiety levels on the day prior to oocyte retrieval had a higher pregnancy rate&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">And yet a <\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/342\/bmj.d223\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2011 large-scale meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><\/span> <\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">looked at 14 different studies that together involved 3583 women undergoing a cycle of fertility treatment and concluded that the affect of stress on pregnancy outcome is overrated. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It states that, \u201cemotional distress caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/fertility-counselling-london.htm\">fertility problems<\/a> or other life events co-occurring with treatment will not<\/strong> compromise the chance of becoming pregnant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">[Feeling so low and lonely you don&#8217;t know where to turn? Reach out to a <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">Online therapist<\/a><\/span> and get the support you need without leaving the house.]<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The REAL reason stress ruins IVF?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The problem with saying that stress and anxiety don&#8217;t really affect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ivf-pregnancy.htm\">IVF pregnancy<\/a> results is that it overlooks something crucial.<\/strong> Just because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress and anxiety<\/a> don&#8217;t make the<em> body<\/em> less successful doesn&#8217;t mean the <em>mind<\/em> is going to cope.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">Anxiety and stress lead to many couples feeling so overwhelmed, they quit before they finish the cycles they signed up for. And you can&#8217;t win if you aren&#8217;t in the game. <\/span><span style=\"color: #666699;\">A<\/span><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fertstert.org\/article\/S0015-0282(03)02860-7\/fulltext\"> Swedish study<\/a><span style=\"color: #666699;\"> found that of 450 participating couples, a shocking 26% quit IVF because of the psychological stress it presented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why is IVF so darned stressful? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-108455\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/online-marketing-758535-unsplash-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"stress and ivf\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/online-marketing-758535-unsplash-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/online-marketing-758535-unsplash-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/online-marketing-758535-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>t\u2019s physically demanding, for starters<\/strong>.<strong> And when we are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">suffering physically<\/a>, our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\"> thoughts can become negative<\/a> and our moods erratic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And it&#8217;s tough on relationships. The IVF process shines a light on any<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">unresolved conflict<\/a> between you and your partner, or any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">unhealthy ways of <\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">communicating you\u2019ve let slide for far too long. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It can also put stress on your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">relationships with family<\/a>, and other parents who might not understand what you\u2019re going through. Suddenly you feel frustrated, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nobody-understands-me.htm\">misunderstood<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\"> alone<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And then there is financial stress.<\/strong> <strong>You might disagree with your partner on how many rounds you can<\/strong> afford (money is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/common-issues-in-couples-therapy.htm\">common relationship conflict<\/a>). Even if you have the money, you might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">suffer guilt<\/a> about spending so much on a process with a limited success rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, IVF can be a trigger for any mental health issues you already had. <\/strong>It&#8217;s not always just the IVF process itself, but that we already are prone to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> stress and depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s1\">7 Ways to navigate the stress of IVF <\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Don\u2019t tell the wrong people. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When we are already stressed, the last thing we need is to have other people make us feel even more<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\"> worried.<\/a> If it\u2019s not already too late, have a chat with your partner about who you want to tell and who you would rather leave out of it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Yes, a gossipy mother-in-law might be insulted to learn in the future she was not told, but if that is the difference between<\/strong> making it through IVF without daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-an-anxiety-attack.htm\">anxiety attacks<\/a>, it\u2019s something you can deal with later.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. But do talk to the ones who actually get it.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Many people who went through IVF recommend this as a key essential &#8211; talking to and reaching out to <\/strong>others who have gone through IVF or are in process, not just doctors and nurses who know the scientific side.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t know anyone, look for support groups, blogs, and online forums.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Now is the time to learn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s important you and your partner or whoever else is involved<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">set strong boundaries<\/a> as soon as possible, and have scheduled meetings to go over them using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">positive communication<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Be honest about what is and isn\u2019t working for you, what you don\u2019t want said to you, when you want help, and when you want to be left alone. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You might want to also consider \u2018stop words\u2019 you can use if you are<\/strong> in a conversation that is crossing your boundary and about to send you into anxiety. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Schedule wellbeing in pen.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yes, we all know we need to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\"> do exercise<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/food-and-mood.htm\">eat well<\/a>, and de-stress if we are to create an ideal environment for fertility. And we decide we\u2019ll do all that&#8230; then life steps in and it all gets pushed or cancelled. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Stop pencilling in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing.<\/a> Make it as important as a doctor\u2019s appointment and as non-negotiable.<\/strong> If your Friday yoga class makes you feel better, and someone says you have to go to a friend\u2019s launch, say you\u2019ve got an appointment you can\u2019t miss. You don\u2019t owe a further explanation, but you do owe yourself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">self-care<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Practise Mindfulness. Daily. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This is an easy, free tool (or really, power tool) that helps you stop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/catastrophizing-always-assuming-the-worse-heres-why-you-should-stop.htm\">constantly thinking about worst possible outcomes<\/a>. And<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\"> mindfulness is proven by research<\/a> to help with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">anxiety and stress<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Twenty minutes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\">mindfulness<\/a> a day can become the difference between a day riddled with <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">anxiety,<\/a> or a day where you feel you can cope. So what are you waiting for? Go and read our free &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">Guide to Mindfulness<\/a>&#8221; and get the habit started. You can even use<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/5-mindfulness-apps.htm\"> mindfulness apps<\/a> if that&#8217;s your thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Drop all comparisons.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just about not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">comparing yourself to others<\/a>, it&#8217;s about not comparing today to yesterday, or this year to last year. It&#8217;s important to take life one day at a time when going through the IVF process.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Seek outside support. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">Friends<\/a> are great, <strong>but sometimes the most precious thing can be someone outside of everything who we can freely vent to without repercussion<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\"> counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a> might be an additional cost, yes. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression, anxiety<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ten-tips-for-anger-management-in-relationships.htm\">constant conflict<\/a> with your partner all take a tremendous amount of time.
