Feel sorry for everything that goes wrong?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\">Is apologising too much sometimes normal?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In the UK we say sorry to every person we pass<\/strong> as we manoeuvre our way around a busy shop. It&#8217;s a harmless show of politesse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And yes, we all sometimes apologise profusely for practical reasons. <\/strong>Saying sorry to the bank manager you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">need a loan<\/a> from, even if you don\u2019t feel the mistake in question is yours, makes sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">It\u2019s when we apologise too much in our <strong><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">daily relationships<\/a> <\/strong>or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">intimate relationships<\/a><\/strong> that things become more serious. Learn the different reasons we apologise and what they can mean about you.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">You always say sorry to avoid conflict.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Dishonest apologising in the name of avoiding conflict generally means <\/strong>you have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\"> unresolved childhood issues.<\/a> Sometimes it&#8217;s a case of growing up around violence, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">parents that were always fighting.<\/a> or an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">alcoholic<\/a> parent who flew into rages. As adults we do what we can to never feel that inner fear again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Or perhaps your main caregiver punished or rejected you if you dared to<\/strong> not be a &#8216;good&#8217; child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Whatever it was that taught you to reject and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-repressed-signs.htm\">repress your true feelings<\/a> and thoughts, you will now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">suffer anxiety<\/a> if someone is upset with you. If we don&#8217;t find help to heal, we can move through our adult life <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-so-unloveable.htm\">feeling an unloved monster<\/a> who is to blame for everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Your partner is amazing, so obviously it&#8217;s your fault.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Apologising because your partner is &#8216;perfect&#8217; so you assume any issues are yours?<\/strong> This again relates to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> and poor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">core beliefs<\/a> about yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">Putting others on pedestals and refusing to see their flaws can also be about a fear of being let down or making mistakes. <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-a-perfectionist.htm\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Pretending things are perfect <\/span><\/a>means we avoid getting hurt, or feeling stupid. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It might be that you were let down badly as a child, or punished if you made mistakes, so you&#8217;ve learned to block out reality.<\/strong> The problem is that nobody is perfect, and the other person might feel stressed by your demands they be so, and eventually walk away.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Note that if you have a tendency to always think people are amazing, but a few months later decide they were actually a monster?<\/strong> This is a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a> which is usually caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">childhood abuse<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">You are apologising because your partner is right, you do everything wrong.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>In a relationship where you started confident, but now find you say sorry for anything and everything?<\/strong> And at first you weren&#8217;t sure that was fair, but your partner always finds a way to show you how you actually mess everything up? How flawed you are? And let you know how lucky you are to be with him or her?<\/p>\n<p>You are in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/honesty-criticism-or-verbal-abuse.htm\">psychologically abusive relationship<\/a>. Learn more in our article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\">&#8220;Ten Excuses That Hide Emotional Abuse&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">You don\u2019t want the other person feel bad. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Take the blame to keep your partner happy?<\/strong> W<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ant them to always like you, so you say sorry when you\u2019ve done nothing wrong? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">These are the red flags of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/codependency-symptoms-modern-times.htm\">codependency<\/a>, where we take our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-are-you-really.htm\">sense of self<\/a> from pleasing others instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boost-low-self-esteem-counsellor.htm\">developing self-esteem<\/a> within.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">You are always apologising because you are always freaking out and upsetting others.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Always blowing up? Going from happy to furious? And after the storm passes, constantly apologising to cover your tracks?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-issues-signs.htm\">anger management issues<\/a> related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">unresolved childhood issues<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> that have left you with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anger-management-help-guide.htm\">excess rage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Rapidly changing moods can also be a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-relationships.htm\">borderline personalty disorder<\/a>. When you have BPD you have what is called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\">emotional dysregulation<\/a>&#8216;. You can&#8217;t control how you feel, and can go from zero to 100 in a few seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">You always apologise so other people don&#8217;t abandon you.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you apologise for things you don&#8217;t actually feel you did, but you\u2019d rather do that than be left on your own?<\/strong> You have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-abandonment.htm\">abandonment issues<\/a> and possibly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\">anxious attachment<\/a>. These can stem from a childhood where you couldn\u2019t rely on<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>a parent to be there for you when you needed them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are so terrified of being abandoned you will manipulate the other person to stay &#8211; make up stories, pretend you are sick<\/strong>, or even threaten them &#8211; then it can again be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-disorder-treatment-therapy.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">You say sorry for everything because then life is easy. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Apologising to conserve energy could be seen as &#8216;being easy going&#8217;.<\/strong> But the refusal to engage that marks an &#8216;easy going personality&#8217; can hide <\/span><span class=\"s1\">a deep-rooted fury at the world. Somewhere along the way something happened you couldn\u2019t control, or that you were powerless to fight, so you gave up trying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Note that emotions don\u2019t disappear, they fester.
