Tried <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/benefits-of-positive-thinking.htm\">positive thinking<\/a> and pushing yourself to try new things, but still have low self worth?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The mistake we make when it comes to inner worth<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The biggest mistake we make about self worth is we think it is just a <i>thought. <\/i><\/strong>That if we just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">change our thoughts<\/a> that we are not worthy, we\u2019ll be better. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">Negative thoughts<\/a> are actually a symptom of low self worth, not a cause. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When we are sure we can \u2018think\u2019 ourselves into<\/strong> having esteem, we are mistaking self worth for low self confidence. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Low self-confidence vs low self-worth<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Low confidence comes from present day challenges,<\/strong> like a job we don\u2019t have the full skillset for, or something we have actually messed up in the past and are worried we will mess up again, like a presentation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Our low confidence is rational. And we can then<\/strong> find rational ways to navigate it &#8211; get help on the speech from a colleague, or find a mentor. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Low self-worth is not rational. We can have the best job going, good health, tons of money, and still feel worthless. We feel ashamed of who we are and what we experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The real triggers for low self worth<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The experiences that lead to having no self-esteem are: <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Childhood abuse. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the most common reasons for low self worth is experiencing physical or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">sexual abuse as a child<\/a>. In an attempt to understand what is happening, a child blames him or herself. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Other childhood trauma.<\/span> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This can look like a parent or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/children-and-grief.htm\">sibling dying<\/a>, a parent leaving suddenly, losing your home, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/child-being-bullied.htm\">being bullied<\/a>, or anything that deeply affected your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-sense-of-self-who-am-i.htm\">sense of self<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">sense of safety<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">ACE&#8217;s. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are a psychological term for very difficult things children live through that might not always qualify as \u2018trauma\u2019. This can include things like neglect, growing up in poverty, an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\"> alcoholic<\/a> or sick parent, one parent being violent to the other, a family member going to jail, and your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-effects-of-divorce-on-children.htm\"> parents divorcing<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Poor parenting.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Blaming all our misery on our parents is not the best tactic.<\/strong> Often parents did the best they can, but didn&#8217;t have the right information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But it is true that <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindful-parenting.htm\">poor parenting<\/a>&#8212; frequent punishments and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/honesty-criticism-or-verbal-abuse.htm\">criticism<\/a>, harsh standards, not being shown enough affection &#8212; is connected to low self-esteem.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The Joesph Rowntree Foundation, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrf.org.uk\/file\/35769\/download?token=9NjS_vzk&amp;filetype=findings\">report on low self-esteem<\/a>, states that, &#8220;the strongest influences upon self-esteem are the individual\u2019s parents. Parenting style, physical and particularly sexual abuse play a significant role.&#8221; <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Poor attachment. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">Attachment theory<\/a> believe that in order to grow up to be an adult who can have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-healthy-destructive-relationship\">healthy, trusting relationships<\/a>, you need a caregiver in your early years who you can trust to always be there for you and accept you. Without this, we grow up not only with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">problems connecting to others<\/a>, but with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\"> low self-esteem<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Negative core beliefs.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Again, a lack of inner worth is driven by a set of beliefs that we are no good, all created by experiences like the above. Negative core beliefs sound like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">everyone else is better than me<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-so-unloveable.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">I am unlovable<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">if anyone knew the real me nobody would want to know me<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">something inside of me is broken beyond repair. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">But I have only had low self-worth since recently<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_108672\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/28512360073_f17f80f386-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108672\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-108672\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/28512360073_f17f80f386-1-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"low self esteem\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/28512360073_f17f80f386-1-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/28512360073_f17f80f386-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-108672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kumarsedit\/28512360073\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Kumar&#8217;s Edit<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manage-anger-after-breakup.htm\">breakup<\/a>, and now you have no self worth.<\/strong> &#8220;I was very confident until that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-narcissist.htm\">narcissist<\/a> ruined my life,&#8221; you tell yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This way of thinking is actually typical in people with <\/strong>low self worth. Creating a false history, constantly re-writing events, playing the victim and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\"> blaming others<\/a> is a way to avoid facing our long history of inner pain. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Facing up to the fact that we\u2019ve been struggling to feel good most of our lives and deep down don\u2019t like ourselves takes a lot of courage. This cycle of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/denial-in-psychology.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">denial <\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">and blame can be easier. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But it leads to more pain in the long run. Until we<\/strong> deal head-on with our past, we will always be running from our very selves, and creating the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-schema-therapy.htm\">difficult pattern<\/a> again and again.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0146167218802837?journalCode=pspc\">2018 study<\/a> showed that in fact people with low self-esteem actually sabotage relationships with their poor skills at asking for support. Backhanded methods like whining, acting sad, and sulking lead to negative responses from partners. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What does low self-worth lead to?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Common red flags of low self worth are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\">difficulty with intimacy<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\"> relationships <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/defence-mechanisms.htm\">defensiveness<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-projecting-feelings.htm\">blaming others <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\"> lack of life purpose<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">poor personal boundaries <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">treading water with your career <\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">addictions &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">alcohol abuse<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">party drugs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">overeating <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-new-eating-disorders.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">eating disorders<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">secret self-harm<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\">suicidal thinking<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/live-life-like-victim-12-ways-tell.htm\">victim mentality<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What can actually help me like and value myself?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For starters let\u2019s look at what WON\u2019T help.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/positive-psychology-movement-myths.htm\">Positive thinking<\/a>, pushing yourself harder, pretending you feel better about yourself than you do, ignoring how you feel and hoping it will just go away. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Low self-worth has deep roots, and deep roots require committed digging.<\/strong> There are methods you can start working with yourself as soon as today.
