But<\/strong> should you trust a psychiatrist suggesting medication? Who else can diagnose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adhd-in-children-should-you-be-concerned.htm\">ADD symptoms in children<\/a> here in the UK?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ADD Symptoms in Children <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">First, let\u2019s clear up some myths about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, or ADD) symptoms in children. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Your child does not have to be hyperactive all the time to receive an ADD diagnosis. This myth leads to many children, particularly girls, going undiagnosed. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There are now three main symptoms recognised as the markers of ADD. These are <\/strong>inattention,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\"> impulsivity<\/a>, and hyperactivity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If your child has even one of these symptoms, to the point they suffer at school and socially, they might be diagnosed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So while the classic example of an ADD\/ ADHD child is one who is<\/strong> disruptive (impulsivity), always fidgeting, and talking a lot (hyperactivity)? For adults, the recommended treatment pathway is indeed medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">But medication first is NOT the official guidance for child ADHD\/ADD in the UK. In fact it is advised that children under five are not given medication. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">Nor is just seeing a psychiatrist recommended (or a paediatrician, who can also prescribe mental health medication to children).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/ng87\">guidelines for child ADHD diagnosis and treatment put out by NICE<\/a>, the National Institute <\/strong>for Health and Care Excellence in the UK,\u00a0clearly advise that teams are involved in a child&#8217;s diagnosis. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">It states, \u201cMental health services for children, young people and adults, and child health services, should form multidisciplinary specialist ADHD teams and\/or clinics for children and young people, and separate teams and\/or clinics for adults.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So who can diagnose my child with ADHD symptoms? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So what sort of health professionals would be <\/strong>involved in a specialist ADHD team for children? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>As well as a child psychiatrist,<\/strong> it can include:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">paediatricians<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">GPs<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">social workers <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">SENCOs (special educational needs coordinator) <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-educational-psychologist.htm\">educational psychologists<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The process of assessment will involve<\/strong> screening questionnaires, a full history of your child\u2019s development, clinical observation and watching your child in the classroom (school observation).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_110412\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/42965823400_fd349b56f2-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110412\" class=\"wp-image-110412 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/42965823400_fd349b56f2-1-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"child psychologist for ADD symptoms in children\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/42965823400_fd349b56f2-1-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/42965823400_fd349b56f2-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/42965823400_fd349b56f2-1.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-110412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/unhcr_ukraine\/42965823400\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">UNHCR Ukraine<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The official diagnosis of child ADHD is made by the<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/child-and-adolescent-adhd-treatment.htm\">child psychiatrist<\/a> , paediatrician, or approved specialist ADHD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/nhs-voluntary-charity-services\/nhs-services\/children-young-people-mental-health-services-cypmhs\/\">CAMHS.<\/a> (This stands for &#8220;children and adolescent mental health services practitioner&#8221;, often an educational psychologist.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But the information gathered by your child&#8217;s team<\/strong> of practitioner&#8217;s helps decide the treatment pathway. For some children that might mean medication, but often it does not.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Are too many drugs prescribed to UK kids?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Unfortunately, with the cuts to public services in recent years<\/strong>, the United Kingdom has seen a rise in the \u201cAmerican way\u201d of treating children with ADHD. Just drugs are offered, without any psychological intervention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The Care Quality Commission reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-23674235\">a 50% rise in the prescription of drugs such as Ritalin<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0between 2007 and 2012 alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">In 2015 the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council stepped in. They<a href=\"https:\/\/assembly.coe.int\/nw\/xml\/XRef\/Xref-XML2HTML-en.asp?fileid=21557&amp;lang=en\"> put out a report<\/a> pushing for countries to \u201chave a comprehensive approach to ADHD treatment, give priority to behavioural interventions and academic support for children with ADHD, and ensure that psycho-stimulants are used as a measure of last resort, and always in combination with other treatments.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bps.org.uk\/news-and-policy\/rise-adhd-educational-psychology-perspective\">An article by the British Psychological Society (BPS),<\/a> written by former chair of the Division of Educational Psychology (DECP), points to a similar concern. It takes issue with \u201cthe number of children being identified as suffering from ADHD and prescribed medication, often without sufficient consideration for systemic factors&#8230;. too many are being places on drug treatment programmes without any form of psychological support\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The article goes on to point out that <strong>children living in adverse conditions often have ADHD behaviours as reactions to life stress <\/strong>rather than biology.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">The BPS also consulted <\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">136 education psychologists from 70 different local authorities. Their findings?\u00a0 Twenty-two per cent reported children under five being prescribed psycho stimulants against NICE advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How does an educational psychologist help?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-educational-psychologist.htm\">Educational psychologists<\/a> focus on looking at all the various factors that affect your child\u2019s learning and development. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">They don&#8217;t just assess ADD symptoms in children, they take a very comprehensive overview that includes looking at: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">emotional difficulties such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> stress<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety, and depression <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">your child\u2019s overall medical health such as hearing and sight<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">other developmental issues and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learning-disabilities-vs-learning-difficulties.htm\"> learning difficulties<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">developmental trauma and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\"> attachment difficulties<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">exposure to domestic violence, neglect,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\"> abuse<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">challenging living conditions and poverty<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/conflicting-parenting-styles.htm\">parenting issues affecting the child<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As well as diagnosing if your child has ADHD or other challenges, they then offer at treatment plan to help your child both at school and home.<\/strong> This can include anything from psychotherapy sessions, parenting support, and school support.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How do I get my child an ADHD assessment?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You can talk to a teacher or your GP, who can refer you to<\/strong> the NHS\u2019s child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Or you can book privately with a<\/strong> child psychiatrist and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/child-psychologist-london.htm\">educational psychologist<\/a>. Choose a highly trained expert in child ADHD with several years of experience who works with care teams. A good practitioner asks what other mental health care workers are involved with your child. He or she will make recommendations for other health care and medical professionals to be involved if necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Does your child need help?
