Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">We can spend our entire adult lives never really questioning if what we think we value comes from us, or is what we have been told to value by those around us. Tap in.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-psychotherapy.htm\">mindfulness meditation<\/a> are designed to pull you away from your racing thoughts about the past you can\u2019t change, and the future you can\u2019t control. You find yourself in the present. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">the more we are in the present<\/a>, the more we can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">hear our actual thoughts and feelings<\/a>. What do we think and feel about something without all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-judging-others.htm\"> judgement<\/a>? <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/easy-ways-to-be-mindful.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a> also helps you tap into your body\u2019s reactions to what is around you, which can be great when snap decisions are required<\/strong>. Then spill out every and all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative crazed though<\/a>t onto the page as fast as you can, not worrying about penmanship, or judging if it seems &#8216;crazy&#8217;. Not at all. It\u2019s integrated into some modern forms of therapy. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Visualisation can access our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconscious mind<\/a>, which can be more aware of what we want. It&#8217;s not clouded by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\"> anxiety<\/a> and judgement of our conscious thoughts. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Try visualising different options when next faced with a big decision<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">Relax as deeply as possible<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">meditating<\/a> first can help, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-an-anxiety-attack.htm\">stops anxiety<\/a> from running the show). Conjure an image of yourself about to choose a certain option, then let images come at random, without judging the process. Think of it like watching a movie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Go under. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Find visualisation too hard? Consider trying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-hypnotherapy.htm\">hypnotherapy<\/a>, which also accesses the unconscious mind. It&#8217;s very good for helping you break through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">beliefs that are holding you back<\/a>, such as the belief that you aren&#8217;t good at decisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note that you don&#8217;t actually &#8216;go under&#8217; with hypnotherapy, this is a myth. You are always aware of<\/strong> what is going on, and can choose to stop the process at any time. Put it on the chair.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The renowned chair technique comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-gestalt-therapy.htm\">Gestalt therapy<\/a>. You sit across from an empty chair and dialogue with something you \u2018place&#8217; on the chair. Often in Gestalt therapy that is a person or situation. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">But in this case it could be one of the options you are facing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Say you are looking at two new jobs. Put one of the jobs on the chair an<\/strong>d \u2018talk\u2019 to it (the empty chair). \u201cIf I take you, then what will the benefits be?&#8221; Now get up and sit in the other chair and answer back to your chair as the job. \u201cIf you take me you\u2019ll be secure, calm, but bored\u201d. Switch back and forth, &#8216;acting out&#8217; the two roles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sound wacky? Maybe. But it can be very effective.<\/strong> It can feel as if making thoughts &#8216;physical&#8217; opens up things you didn&#8217;t expect. Worth a try.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Get unbiased support.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>The thing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friends<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\"> family<\/a> is that they mean well, but they are invested in your choice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-the-right-therapist.htm\"> therapist<\/a>, on the other hand, isn&#8217;t. They are only invested in<\/strong> you finding the outcome that leaves you the most mentally healthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And there is something about the safety of the therapy room that acts as a truth serum.<\/strong> Finally,\u00a0 a therapist is trained at advanced<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\"> listening<\/a> and reflecting back.
