And why?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>The pandemic of loneliness<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One major reason is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-overcome-loneliness.htm\">loneliness<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/wellbeing\/articles\/lonelinesswhatcharacteristicsandcircumstancesareassociatedwithfeelinglonely\/2018-04-10\">Research by the UK\u2019s Office for National Statistics<\/a> found that, &#8220;16 to 24 year-olds felt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\">lonely<\/a> more often than any other age group, with 10% saying that they felt lonely \u2018always or often&#8217;.\u2019\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This feeling of isolation can be caused by moving school,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/university-and-depression-survival-guide-students.htm\"> starting university<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">disconnected family life<\/a>, and generally being further away from a strong support network of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">people you trust<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Left untreated, loneliness can have serious consequences. Those affected by things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-love-addiction.htm\">addictions<\/a> often experience loneliness as a result of their condition. They tend to isolate themselves due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a>, difficulty interacting, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/handling-depression-stigma.htm\">social stigma<\/a> attached to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health issues<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How does community building help?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are a few reasons why community \u2014 both online and offline \u2014 can help alleviate loneliness and lead to a marked improvement in mental health. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Shared understanding.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Whether you\u2019re a freelance writer having a rant about unpaid invoices or a social media executive learning about the latest Instagram update, talking to others who understand your day-to-day life is comforting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For others this might mean talking to people who have had a similar childhood, opening up in a support group about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\">grief<\/a> or just finding virtual buddies to play video games with.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Sense of purpose.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">Facebook<\/a> groups for just about everything these days from crafting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/weddings-and-depression-pnd.htm\">wedding planning<\/a> to sustainable living. Having the odd piece of knowledge to share with your people is satisfying and fills the lonely days with moments of meaningful contribution. For you this might be teaching an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">art class<\/a>, coaching the local netball team or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\"> going to the gym<\/a> and spotting someone when they lift heavy weights.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">3. How often have you had a great idea and then talked yourself out of going through with it? <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Being part of a community of like-minded people gives you a safe space to explore creative thoughts<\/strong> in conversation, lets you bounce ideas off people and even collaborate to bring them to fruition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800080;\">4. Resilience.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>If we have others to run things by, even if it&#8217;s just over a Facebook group page, we can feel stronger about a challenge we are facing and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\"> bounce back<\/a> more easily if we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">feel overwhelmed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800080;\">5. Belonging.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s described best by psychologists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Sense-of-Community-%3A-A-Definition-and-Theory-W.-M.\/e5fb8ece108aec36714ee413876e61b0510e7c80?p2df\">McMillan &amp; Chavis<\/a>, who wrote that, &#8220;A sense of community is \u2018a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members\u2019 needs will be met through their commitment to be together.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Community building ideas<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">start with your passions \u2014 whether it\u2019s painting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dance-movement-psychotherapy.htm\">dancing<\/a> or watching movies \u2014 and seek out clubs in your area<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">search <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Eventbrite<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\" rel=\"nofollow\">Meetup<\/a> for interesting events. Many of them are free and will be filled with people who have similar interests to you<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">if you\u2019re an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jung-personality-types.htm\">introvert<\/a>, try online communities first to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\"> build your confidence <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">listen to podcasts on topics that you love. You\u2019ll find that many of them have associated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">Facebook<\/a> groups where listeners gather to talk about each episode. This is also true for TV shows, movies, bands, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">take part in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tweetreports.com\/twitter-chat-schedule\/\">Twitter chats\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">join learning communities or take an online course, many of them have forums where you can talk to fellow students<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boosting-your-mood-volunteer.htm\">volunteering<\/a>.
