And it&#8217;s increasingly popular here in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><em>But what is it actually like to try? Are the rumours about flashing lights true? Writer <strong>Jo Love<\/strong> shares her personal experience of rapid eye movement therapy.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;My experience of rapid eye movement therapy&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>EMDR essentially helps decrease the intensity, or what I like to think of as the \u2018emotional heat\u2019 of, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-repressed-emotions.htm\">anxiety-triggering memory<\/a> or thought process. But how does it do that?<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">How I learned about EMDR therapy<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>EMDR first came to my attention through my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/integrative-therapy-london.htm\">integrative counsellor<\/a> who I was seeing for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/postnatal-depression-symptoms-treatments.htm\">postnatal depression<\/a> after having my first and only child. Basically I was finding it incredibly difficult to be alone with my little girl and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">riddled with anxiety<\/a> . But inside I was<\/strong> numb and lonely, full of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feel-like-a-failure.htm\">feelings of failure<\/a>. The tiniest of decisions would throw me into a panic. I started having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-intrusive-thoughts.htm\">intrusive thoughts<\/a> that my husband and child would be better off without me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I tried to tell myself it was a normal part of<\/strong> motherhood.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">It was only when I took a cold look at the stockpile of painkillers I\u2019d been collecting in a drawer \u2018just in case\u2019 I needed to disappear that I realised the enormity of what was going on. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>I went to my GP for help and was<\/strong> referred to a counsellor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After working together for almost a year she told me that she felt I was actually experiencing<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">complex post-traumatic stress disorder (c-PTSD)<\/a> triggered by my post-natal depression, and she\u2019d like to try EMDR.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">What I thought at first about EMDR therapy<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>I was shocked that I had a form of PTSD, which I thought was just for people who went through<\/strong> life threatening experiences like soldiers.\u00a0 So to be honest I didn\u2019t overthink the type of therapy the counsellor wanted to try with me.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I admit I thought her explanation of watching a light seemed odd though &#8211; how would that help?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But I trusted her completely by then. Trust is such an important part of therapy, I feel very lucky that I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-the-right-therapist.htm\">found a counsellor<\/a> quickly I got along with. So even though it sounded like some weird hypnosis to me,\u00a0 it was fine. She reassured me that we could take things at my pace. Her confidence that it would help was comforting.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">What is an EMDR session actually like?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>From what I understand, there are various methods EMDR practitioners use. I\u2019ve heard some, for example,<\/strong> ask you to follow a waving pencil with your eyes. Unless the sun was coming in too strongly and making it hard for me to see the light. Then my therapist would draw her blinds.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It was a\u00a0 narrow light strip mounted on a tripod a couple of feet away from me, about 50 cm long and maybe an inch wide. Little rectangles of blue light appeared and pulsed back and forth in a line, which I followed with my eyes.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Bring on the traumatic memories&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The sessions themselves revolve around you<\/strong> focusing on a specific traumatic memory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At the beginning of a session we\u2019d together find a memory that I could feel myself reacting to.<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d rank the emotional &#8216;heat\u2019 that memory held, and what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">negative belief<\/a> about myself I associated with it (for example \u201cI\u2019m flawed\u201d, \u201cI don\u2019t deserve what I want\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m not important\u201d etc.).<\/p>\n<p><strong>And then I made a \u2018still\u2019 of it in my mind \u2013 a bit like pausing a movie and<\/strong> looking at the image. Then the light is turned on. So you\u2019d be thinking of the memory and then staring at the light. Your mind kind of wanders and you then talk about whatever is going on in your body or mind.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">My therapist would say it\u2019s like looking out of the window of a train just noticing the things that come by. It\u2019s weird! So you might suddenly get a really hot ear for example, then the next round you might <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">have anxiety<\/a><\/span> knots, or you might have a <span style=\"color: #000080;\">feeling of shame<\/span>, or think of a word or a person, or another memory.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_114480\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114480\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-114480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5502373705_7c9a3c1913-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"eye movement therapy\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5502373705_7c9a3c1913-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5502373705_7c9a3c1913.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-114480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bruceberrien\/5502373705\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Bruce Berrien<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>My Dad passed away so he\u2019d often pop up in some way, or a detail you hadn\u2019t noticed at the time, a smell,\u00a0 or something unrelated. I often \u2018felt\u2019 my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-does-a-traumatic-experience-do-to-your-body-and-brain.htm\">brain<\/a> inside my head, however odd that sounds! It didn\u2019t hurt, but I would just be able to \u2018feel&#8217; it.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">How did I feel during my EMDR sessions?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t feel that strange looking at the light. You\u2019re not<\/strong> asleep, nor do you feel in anyway absent or strange. I just felt a pressure at first to keep up with the machine and make sure I was getting it right, but then I got used to it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But the sensations that happen with the emotional processing is the strange bit. It\u2019s a little bit like a kind of controlled time travel. You\u2019re completely aware that you\u2019re here and now, but you also feel like you\u2019re in your body from back then, and re-experiencing aspects of it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The whole thing was often really visceral nature. I would often<\/strong> feel this pressure across the front of my body, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">anxiety<\/a> knots in my stomach that would begin almost as soon as the light went on, and disappear as the light turned off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019d work in intervals of me staring at the light, often about a minute at a time. Between each interval<\/strong> my therapist would stop the light and ask what was coming up, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">what am I feeling<\/a>, what am I noticing. If it\u2019s physical, and if so where in my body, what\u2019s the intensity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>She didn\u2019t spend long dwelling on my responses, she\u2019d say<\/strong> \u201cgo with that\u201d and then off we go again, more and more \u2018rounds\u2019 of intervals until the emotions and physical sensations neutralised.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">How often did I do EMDR sessions?<\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_114483\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7649817202_fbc720b428.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114483\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-114483\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7649817202_fbc720b428-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"eye movement therapy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7649817202_fbc720b428-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/7649817202_fbc720b428.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-114483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/42042512@N00\/7649817202\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Carlos Ebert<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">I ended up having EMDR on and off for 8 months or so, in weekly one-hour sessions.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But occasionally we would take a break for a few weeks and have some normal talk therapy.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">How easy would I say EMDR is as an experience?<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">I have spent most of my life <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-repressed-signs.htm\">keeping a lid on my emotions<\/a> and very effectively boxing things up, and EMDR unleashed it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>One day it could be relatively easy, other times intensely raw and emotional, even<\/strong> disconcerting. There were times it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">physically<\/a> and emotionally knocked me for six, and I would have to go to bed for the entire rest of the day.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d definitely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\">cry<\/a> a lot. My therapist was also really reassuring. \u201cYou\u2019re doing really well,\u201d she\u2019s tell me. \u201cIt\u2019s all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trauma-therapy-what-works.htm\">old trauma<\/a> coming out.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">The funny thing that happened\u2026.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I started to realise I had anxiety about EMDR itself \u2013 so guess what we did \u2013 we did EMDR on that too! What I found enormously comforting was my therapist took everything at my pace, always making sure I was the one in control.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Did EMDR work for me?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I still have a long way to go as far as tackling my painful memories and negative beliefs go.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But I have definitely seen more improvements and progress than ever before. Not just when reflecting on the specific memories we worked on, but also in other areas too.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And overall the longer-lasting effect of EMDR has been that I feel the emotions, but they do not control me.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Would I recommend EMDR to friends?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Yes, I would highly recommend giving EMDR a go if you\u2019ve struggled to get results from traditional therapy, or want to try a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trauma-therapy-what-works.htm\">different approach to resolving trauma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Ready to work through trauma and move on?
