What is the<\/strong> meaning of boredom for you personally? Is it as bad as you think, or could it be useful?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What is boredom, anyway?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We like to think it\u2019s that we have nothing interesting to do.<\/strong> And in some situations &#8211; trapped in a delayed train, stuck with a few more hours before the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\"> end of an office day<\/a> without any work left to do \u2014 this can be true. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Yet often, particularly in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">today\u2019s wired world<\/span><\/a>, we are bored for quite the opposite reason. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">We are overstimulated<\/span><\/a> and oversaturated. After an <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\">onslaught of choice<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #800080;\">information<\/span>, we suddenly feel uninterested in anything at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Are some people naturally more prone to boredom?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yes, it seems so. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1053810013001402\">Research<\/a> at York University, Canada identified two types of personality that have a tendency toward boredom.<\/strong> The first is the sort who continually seek new experiences. The second is the type who feels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">the world is dangerous<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-confidence-how-much-of-a-problem-is-it-really.htm\">stick to their comfort zone<\/a>, even when it\u2019s too comfortable and bores them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are an adolescent, you might feel bored because<\/strong> your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\"> teenage brain<\/a> is still developing.\u00a0 Your frontal cortex, which aids with self regulation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">self-control<\/a>, is not quite fully formed. You can&#8217;t see a way to move yourself out of uncomfortable situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And if you\u2019ve had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">traumatic head injury<\/a> or are suffering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">psychiatric illness<\/a><\/strong>, these too have been connected to higher levels of boredom. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When the meaning of boredom is an important message<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><em>But have you been bored more than usual lately? Have a sneaky feeling your boredom might be about something else entirely? See if any of the following could be the culprit.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1.You aren\u2019t listening to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">your values<\/a>. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you haven\u2019t clarified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">what things truly, deeply matter to you<\/a>? And you aren\u2019t aligning your choices and life with them? <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">You will end up in situations where you feel like you are constantly pushing against yourself. Because you are. In an effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">be like others<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-get-along-with-your-family.htm\">please family<\/a>, you are going against your own values, and it\u2019s exhausting. And yes, boring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. And by doing nothing, we end up feeling bored.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This can be the case if you are in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\">codependent relationship<\/a> or a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-trauma-bonding.htm\"> controlling relationship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. You need to set a goal and take action. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes a feeling of boredom is a clear sign that we are treading water instead of being proactive. The meaning of boredom here is that it is time to look at options,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\"> choose a clear direction<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\">make it a SMART goal<\/a>, and make it happen. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. You are avoiding something. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not wanting to make a decision? Avoiding a difficult situation or conversation?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">Avoiding things can also cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a>, which leaves us too caught up in <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">fearful thoughts<\/a><\/span> to do things that interest us or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-happy-why-is-it-so-hard.htm\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">bring us joy<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The best way forward is to<\/strong> face what we are avoiding. If it\u2019s too overwhelming, seek support. Either a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">good friend<\/a>, family member, or, if you feel there is no one to talk to, <a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">consider counselling<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Or that we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/saying-no.htm\">always doing what others want,<\/a> and inside a part of us senses it\u2019s not our own desire and feels bored. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. You are actually mildly depressed. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When you say you are bored, is it that you can\u2019t think of anything to do? Or is it actually that<\/strong> all the things you usually like seem strangely far away, like something other people do? And takes energy you don\u2019t feel you have anymore?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000080;\">Boredom is because we perceive we lack external stimuli that interests us. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Depression<\/span><\/a> comes from within. We can\u2019t find the incentive to be interested in anything, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">feel numb and disconnected<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[Not sure if you are depressed or just stressed? You have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\">adult ADHD<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/228063466_Exploring_the_relationship_between_boredom_and_sustained_attention\">study at Canada&#8217;s University of Waterloo<\/a>, led by boredom expert James Danckert, showed a direct link between being &#8216;high boredom-prone&#8217; and having symptoms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-adhd-in-adults.htm\">attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)<\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>So if you are often bored, get frustrated, and struggle with focus, you might want to try our free quiz<\/strong>, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">Do You Have Adult ADHD<\/a>?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When boredom is a good thing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Are you the type who never slows down? Who fills any spare time with <\/strong>endless little errands and tasks? And do you claim it\u2019s because you \u2018don\u2019t like to be bored\u2019? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In this case, boredom can be a good thing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is a space to be with yourself and face up to the<\/strong> thoughts and emotions that all your \u2018busy\u2019 has been about hiding from. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Often these thoughts and feelings are not the giant monsters we are worried they are, and processing them can be a<\/strong> surprising relief.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a> can be a great practise here.
