They are affected by<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/parental-stress.htm\">stress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">life change<\/a>, as well as by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/menopause-anxiety.htm\">hormones<\/a> and bodily changes. And they are trying to understand themselves and the world. So they will<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\"> test limits<\/a>, have tantrums, or even be destructive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But if your child is consistently, over time, acting out in ways that disregard and disrespect others?<\/strong> If it\u2019s not just naughtiness, but if they are breaking rules other children don\u2019t? Then it can be time to consider conduct disorder. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">What is conduct disorder? It means your child or adolescent has ongoing and persistent tendencies towards antisocial, defiant, or even aggressive behaviours. Refusing to behave as expected for their age, they are disruptive and low on remorse. <\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">Normal life and development becomes very challenging for your child and your family.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Conduct disorder symptoms <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Symptoms of conduct disorder become more sophisticated with age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Symptoms in young children can include:\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">don&#8217;t seem<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\"> to be afraid<\/a> of anything <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">don\u2019t obey rules or go along with things<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">hurting other kids &#8211; unsafe sex, overuse of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/club-drugs-and-therapy.htm\">drugs<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\"> alcohol <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">no respect for teachers and other authorities <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">doing poorly at school even if bright<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">few to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">no real friends <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexual-assault-long-term-psychological-effects-survivors-need-know.htm\">sexual agression<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do symptoms differ between boys and girls?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Yes, they can, which some believe has led to more boys being diagnosed with conduct disorder than girls.\u00a0<\/strong>The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/cg158\/chapter\/Introduction\">guidelines for conduct disorder recognition and management<\/a> states that &#8220;7% of boys and 3% of girls aged 5 to 10 years have conduct disorders; in children aged 11 to 16 years the proportion rises to 8% of boys and 5% of girls.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Boys tend to be more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jung-personality-types.htm\">extroverted<\/a> with conduct disorder, with more apparent violence and rage. Girls can resort to more hidden symptoms, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-honest-does-it-matter.htm\">lying<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manipulative-behaviour-are-you-guilty.htm\">manipulation<\/a>, risky sex, shoplifting, and running away.<\/p>\n<h2>Other connected issues and disorders<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)<\/a> is often a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-comorbidity.htm\">comorbid diagnosis<\/a> with conduct disorder. Although of course many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adhd-in-children-should-you-be-concerned.htm\">children with ADHD <\/a>do not have conduct issues.<\/p>\n<p>Children and adolescents with conduct disorder are also more likely to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-learning-difficulties.htm\">learning difficulties<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">suffer depression<\/a> or have signs of PTSD.<\/p>\n<h2>Environmental factors and conduct disorder<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">Difficult environments<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> make your child more likely to have conduct disorder. This can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-think-i-was-abused-as-a-child.htm\">abuse<\/a> and\/or neglect as a child<\/li>\n<li>a parent with mental health issues<\/li>\n<li>family adversity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcpsych.ac.uk\/mental-health\/parents-and-young-people\/information-for-parents-and-carers\/behavioural-problems-and-conduct-disorder-for-parents-carers-and-anyone-who-works-with-young-people\">The Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP)<\/a> here in the UK points out that parenting factors can also add to a diagnosis of conduct disorder. &#8220;Parents can sometimes make things worse by giving too little attention to good behaviour,&#8221; they point out, &#8220;always being too quick to criticise, or by being too flexible about the rules and not supervising their children.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_114711\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114711\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-114711\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mehrdad-haghighi-sRW6SD27LXc-unsplash-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"conduct disorder\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mehrdad-haghighi-sRW6SD27LXc-unsplash-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mehrdad-haghighi-sRW6SD27LXc-unsplash-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mehrdad-haghighi-sRW6SD27LXc-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-114711\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Mehrdad Haghighi<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Oppositional defiant disorder vs conduct disorder vs antisocial personality disorder<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Heard all these terms and not sure of the difference?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) <\/strong>involves similar levels of defiance and antisocial behaviour. The difference is the extent and severity of the behaviour. With ODD a child might act out consistently at home, but might manage to get by at school. More common in children under ten,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2FBF01261600\">research<\/a> shows that around a quarter of children with ODD go on to have CD.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Keep in mind that all these terms are not exact illnesses. They are terms created by mental health professionals to describe groups of children with similar symptoms.\u00a0The terms change, and not all diagnostic manuals agree.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For example, the World Health Organisation, in their manual the ICD-10, prefer to divide conduct disorders into socialised conduct disorder, unsocialised conduct disorder, conduct disorders confined to the family context, and oppositional defiant disorder.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-antisocial-personality-disorder.htm\">Antisocial personality disorder<\/a>, like all personality disorders, is a diagnosis only for those aged<\/strong> 18 and above. Having conduct disorder in childhood does make someone more likely to receive a diagnosis of this personality disorder once they reach adulthood.<\/p>\n<h2>Is a diagnosis of conduct disorder always a good thing?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\">A diagnosis<\/a> can serve to get your child the help he or she needs<\/strong> in order to learn more appropriate social behaviours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if things like<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learning-disabilities-vs-learning-difficulties.htm\"> learning differences<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/childhood-effects-of-trauma.htm\"> previous traumas<\/a> are increasing your child&#8217;s negative behaviours, then getting help can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">*But where a diagnosis goes wrong is it if leads to your child feeling labelled and given up on.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Again, mental health diagnoses are not medical illnesses you see under a microscope. <\/strong>They are simply terms created by mental health professionals to more easily describe groups of people with similar symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nor is diagnosis a perfect art. Criteria change with <\/strong>new editions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-dsm.htm\">diagnostic manuals<\/a>. And some mental health professionals question if it is appropriate to diagnose young children, when some children experience extreme behaviours as a part of their normal development but grow out of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perhaps the best approach is to always remember, regardless of labels, your child is an individual.<\/strong> And what matters is getting support to alleviate symptoms and to help your family function.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Want a professional opinion of your child&#8217;s behavioural issues?
