The &#8216;freelance economy&#8217; has seen many of us wave goodbye to steady jobs to achieve what we thought a dream lifestyle of freedom.<\/p>\n<p><em>But turns out that being your own boss doesn&#8217;t come without a price. <strong>Andrea M. Darcy<\/strong> explores.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The psychological costs of working for yourself<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leapers.co\/research\/2021\/report\/\">2021 survey by freelancer mental health association Leapers<\/a>\u00a0found that <span class=\"stat\">79 per cent of those who become self-employed didn&#8217;t even consider how it might impact their mental health. 35 per cent end up reporting that the reality of working for themselves was not what they expected.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If any of the following sound familiar, know you are not alone. Many who attempt to be a freelancer or entrepreneur go through a similar journey.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Anxiety.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_11490\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5770530596_12a39e4769.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11490\" class=\"wp-image-11490 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5770530596_12a39e4769-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"self employed\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5770530596_12a39e4769-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5770530596_12a39e4769.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pat00139\/5770530596\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Pat Pilon<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"western\">Work has always been the cause of anxiety for some, but there are new reasons workers are anxious.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Freelancers live with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">constant worry<\/a> over whether new contracts will come in, and can feel like they no longer have life security.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>And then there is the lack of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/giving-constructive-feedback.htm\">feedback<\/a> the regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-in-the-workplace.htm\">workplace<\/a> provides. This can lead to anxiety about <span style=\"color: #333333;\">whether or not clients are happy with the work being done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>(Not sure you are suffering anxiety or just stressed? Money-related depression. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It can be hard to predict a regular income if working for yourself, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">money stress<\/a>. Freelancing can also lead to being seen differently by banks, and we might have not realised we&#8217;d, say, now struggle to get a mortgage like our friends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And many new businesses take out start-up loans,<\/strong> which can seem a good idea at first.\u00a0 But it cause stress later on when the interest-free period expires or the generous relative demands payback. We end up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">depression over debt<\/a>, which can be even more problematic if we are too embarrassed to let family or friends know for fear they see us as a failure.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Lowered self-esteem. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">Traditional workplaces<\/a> provide feedback and ongoing training that works to keep employees feeling on track. Without this structure, and without constructive criticism, freelance workers can worry about their performance or talent. This can exacerbate any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">self-esteem issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And while a project gone wrong can seem acceptable and a part of any job when it&#8217;s for a company, if it&#8217;s your own company, it can seem a personal setback.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">4. But then we find ourselves a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/working-from-home-mental-health.htm\">freelancer working at home<\/a>, and discover we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">prone to distraction<\/span><\/a> without supervision, in ways we didn&#8217;t expect. It can feel harder and harder to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-get-things-done.htm\">get things done<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-meaning-of-boredom.htm\">Boredom<\/a> can also trigger<\/strong> all of the above, when the thrill of working from home in your pyjamas or being your own boss wears off.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">5. Loneliness. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">Many workers gone freelance underestimate how much they relied on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">social contact<\/a> the workplace provided, or on afterwork drinks. Burnout is specifically about <em>experiencing feelings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/powerlessness-when-world-events-overwhelm.htm\">powerlessness<\/a> and loss of control.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms to look out for include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">exhaustion even after sleep<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>lowered productivity levels<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/no-motivation.htm\">lack of motivation<\/a> and enthusiasm<\/li>\n<li>increased cynicism and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-distortions-cbt.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> negative thinking<\/span><\/a> including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-useless.htm\">feeling useless<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unexplained physical ailments<\/span><\/a> or endless colds and flu<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/irritability-factor.htm\">irritability<\/a> or impatience with people you used to get along with<\/li>\n<li>a drop in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">self-care<\/a>, which can include a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">change to eating patterns<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">fuzzy thinking<\/a> and a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\"> lowered capacity to make decisions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How stay sane when working for yourself<\/h2>\n<p>How can you take care of your psychological health if you are part of the new, more flexible work force? Try these tips.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Set goals and create accountability.<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">goal-setting<\/a> can seem basic and boring. But with nobody else monitoring you it helps to have a way to monitor yourself so you don&#8217;t free float and get way off track. Make goals for each hour and use a timer. Then make daily, weekly, and monthly targets as well. Consider using apps to keep you focussed (read our piece on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-move-forward-this-year.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> &#8216;Apps that Move You Forward&#8217;<\/span><\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Or connect with other freelancers and set weekly goals you then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-accountability.htm\">hold each other accountable<\/a> for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>2. Learn to balance optimism and pessimism.<\/h3>\n<p>Trying to be cheerful and upbeat when you feel terrible is a waste of energy. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with down days when you are an entrepreneur and working for yourself. Find tools to help you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/power-of-negativity.htm\">use your negativity<\/a> to drive you forward and give you insight, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">journalling<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindfulness<\/a>, or channeling that negativity into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">exercise that boosts your wellbeing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>3.\u00a0Get serious about self-care and have boundaries.<\/h3>\n<p>Working for yourself can mean your entire life becomes about work. You are always thinking about ideas and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\"> don&#8217;t have such clear boundaries<\/a> between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-balance-tips-have-you-tried-this.htm\">work and home<\/a>. Self-care can be one of the first things to go, but it&#8217;s connected to our mental health.<\/p>\n<p><em>Try to do three things a week for yourself, even if its just small things like a hot bath or gym trip. Don&#8217;t just think about it, put it in your diary.
