Are you worried about losing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-parents-are-you-one.htm\">parent<\/a>, or a a partner dying?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is a fear of losing loved ones normal?<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Yes, it\u2019s normal to not want the people we love to die. <\/strong>We enjoy their company, and know life would be very different without them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We also don\u2019t talk enough about death in modern culture. So there can be<\/strong> a <strong>certain amount of fear simply because<\/strong> we don\u2019t fully know what we would be dealing with. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freuds-main-theories-psychoanalysis.htm\">Freud<\/a> coined a fear of death and dying &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Death_anxiety_(psychology)\">thanatophobia<\/a>&#8216;, and felt we all suffer from it because we refuse to accept our mortality. Modern psychologists call this common fear plain old &#8216;death anxiety&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A healthy or unhealthy fear? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A normal fear of loss involves<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\"> worry<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness<\/a> when we think about our loved ones moving on, followed by an understanding it\u2019s an unavoidable fact of life. It can mean a moment spent considering our own mortality. But in general, we realise we would cope.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">An unhealthy fear of losing loved ones is more like a rising anxiety, and comes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">extreme thinking<\/span><\/a>. We feel our life would be over without the other person. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">The more we think about losing the loved person in question, <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">the worse we feel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">Anxiety symptoms<\/a> kick in, which can include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">increasingly illogical thoughts <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a growing and pervasive<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\"> feeling of fear <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">physical symptoms like sweatiness, beating heart, stomach upset, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">muscle tension<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">changes to sleep<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">eating patterns<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic attacks<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is the fear beneath the fear? <\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_114839\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4926107257_bc3f6ce8d9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114839\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-114839\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4926107257_bc3f6ce8d9-400x307.jpg\" alt=\"fear of losing loved ones\" width=\"400\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4926107257_bc3f6ce8d9-400x307.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4926107257_bc3f6ce8d9.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-114839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blue_diamond\/4926107257\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Blue Diamond Photography<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Loss of a loved one an easy thing to place all our worries on because it is an acceptable anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">So sometimes we use a fear of losing loved ones to hide other fears we are more <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed of<\/a><\/span><strong><span class=\"s1\">,<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"> like fear of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">being alone <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">having to do everything by yourself<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">not knowing how to cope <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">having no identity<\/a> of your own.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why is it so important to admit to these &#8216;fears beneath the fear&#8217;? They are actually easier to deal with.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><span class=\"s1\">We can\u2019t stop other people around us from one day dying. But we<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> can find support to learn new ways of being, and take steps forward so that we no longer feel overwhelmed at the idea of being responsible for navigating our own life.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\">Fear of losing loved ones and codependency <\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Are you a teenager who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-mother-wound-under-mothered.htm\">afraid of your mother dying<\/a>? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Or who is too paranoid to move out or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/university-and-depression-survival-guide-students.htm\"> go to university<\/a> in case your single parent &#8216;dies&#8217; without you? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-want-to-fall-in-love-how-to.htm\">romantic relationship<\/a> and experiencing panic attacks at the thought of your partner not being around? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Fear of losing loved ones can hide a problem with codependency.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\">Codependency<\/a> involves taking your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-sense-of-self-who-am-i.htm\">sense of self<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">worth<\/a> from another person, instead of developing it within. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">If you are in a codependent relationship you will feel it is your responsibility to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>constantly make the other person happy, and that you don\u2019t know who you are without them. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Despite telling yourself that you just \u2018really love\u2019 the other person, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/codependency-symptoms-modern-times.htm\">codependency<\/a> is not a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\">healthy way of relating<\/a>. It leaves you unable to see all your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/find-your-inner-resources.htm\">inner resources<\/a> and personal power. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Allowing yourself to move out and become independent can make a real difference. Accept that you are<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">experiencing anxiety<\/a> around losing a loved one. Then try the following: <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Make a list of all your concerns. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Anxiety is powerful because it feels out of control, sending our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">thoughts on endless spirals<\/a>. But if we take the time to sit and write out on paper what is behind the anxiety? Our life can be less out of control than we think. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">What are the very worse things that would happen if you lost your loved one? That you wouldn\u2019t have a place to live, or anyone to talk to? What are possible solutions to each problem? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Identify what you\u2019ve already lost. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You might be more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">resilient<\/a> than you realise. Loss is a part of life and you&#8217;ve likely already successfully navigated some, and come through the other side. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Write out things you really valued that you lost, whether that was a childhood<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\"> friend<\/a> moving away, or having to graduate from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/surviving-the-school-holidays.htm\">school<\/a> you liked being at. See if you can remember what you did to navigate that loss and bounce back.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Practise mindfulness. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a> is a technique to help you stay in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">the present moment<\/a>, instead of being lost to worries about a future you can control and a past you can\u2019t change. We can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\">become more grateful<\/a> for what is right in front of us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Read our easy how-to &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">Guide to Mindfulness<\/a>&#8216; and start practising as soon as today.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Learn about death and dying. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Major cities now have what are known as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/uk-england-hereford-worcester-37318101\">death cafes<\/a>\u2019. These are gatherings for people to come and discuss their fears of death and dying with a \u2018death doula\u2019, someone who understands the process. Even simple things like learning how a funeral is arranged and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\">how the grieving process works<\/a> can demystify the process we all at some point face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Visit a &#8216;death cafe&#8217;, read about other people&#8217;s experiences, or ask people you know who have gone through a bereavement to share their story.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Talk about your fear with supportive others. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You might want to share you anxiety with your loved one themselves. If this seems a bad idea, try a trusted friend or family member. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Feel nobody would understand your anxiety about losing a loved one? Then speak to a counsellor.<\/strong> Your school might have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-cost-therapy-free-counselling-services.htm\">free or low cost counselling<\/a> if you are a student, or your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">workplace<\/a> might provide several free sessions.
