The children and technology relationship is one both<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-educational-psychologist.htm\"> psychologists<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-parents-are-you-one.htm\">parents<\/a> are concerned by.<\/p>\n<p><em>Author and parent<span style=\"color: #333399;\"> <strong>Liat Hughes Joshi<\/strong><\/span> explores.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>The modern parenting challenge?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/too-much-screen-time-depression.htm\">Screen overload<\/a> is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges modern mums and dads face with their families.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s a toddler who throws tantrums when you take your iPhone back, a primary schooler who is glued to Fortnite, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\">teen<\/a> obsessed with Instagramming their every move? When it comes to children and technology it&#8217;s easy to declare, \u2018they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/addiction-help-guide.htm\">addicted<\/a>\u2019. But are they?<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s true that the World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/13-09-2018-public-health-implications-of-excessive-use-of-the-internet-and-other-communication-and-gaming-platforms\"> declared <span class=\"s1\">\u2018gaming disorder\u2019 a recognised condition in 2018<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But reality is that most children are not addicted, just more enthusiastic than we\u2019d like. <\/strong>If your child maintains other hobbies like sports, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">has a social life<\/a>, is in good health, and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/student-stress-what-is-it.htm\">doing well at school<\/a>, then they are unlikely to be addicted.<\/p>\n<h3>How can I tell if my child has an actual screen addiction?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/screen-time-recommendations.htm\">Screen addiction<\/a> is like any<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-dual-diagnosis.htm\"> addiction<\/a>.\u00a0 The hallmark sign is that it impacts all areas of life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is made clear in the WHO description of gaming disorder, which they explain is<\/strong> &#8220;<span class=\"s1\">characterised by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming\u2026to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Observe your child or teen&#8217;s behaviour and look out for the following signs:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1.Preferring screens to people or activities they previously enjoyed.<\/span><\/strong> This would of course be beyond the normal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-for-teens.htm\">teen temperamental behaviour<\/a>, or the flightiness of some younger children.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Responding disproportionately when you ask them to switch off their tech activity. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This could mean meltdowns, sullenness, or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-in-children-how-can-you-help.htm\"> aggressive comments<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Exhibiting classic withdrawal symptoms.<\/span> <\/strong>Notice your child&#8217;s behaviour when they using technology. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> is a key withdrawal symptom. Also look for mood swings,\u00a0 snappiness, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\"> listlessness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. A significant decline in school performance. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">They might be less interested in school, or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adhd-in-children-should-you-be-concerned.htm\"> unable to pay attention<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\"> Sleep problems<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong> This could be having<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\"> trouble sleeping<\/a>, or staying up very late or even all night to use their gadget.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Increasing secrecy.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong> Talking less with you, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-honest-does-it-matter.htm\">being dishonest<\/a> and hiding things.\u00a0 This is of course also part of adolescence, but in this case the secrecy would be around tech use, such as buying a game you&#8217;d banned, or saying they were doing homework when they were on their devices.<\/p>\n<h3>How to manage children and technology<\/h3>\n<p>Child not addicted, but veering in that direction? It&#8217;s still worth taking seriously. As the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcpch.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/build-screen-time-around-family-activities-not-other-way-round-parents-told\"> Royal College of Psychiatrists states<\/a>\u00a0about children and technology,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;<span class=\"s1\">when screen time displaces\u2026activities [such as eating, sleeping, socialising], the evidence suggests there is a risk to child wellbeing.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Take steps now to manage your child&#8217;s technology habit.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Determine your family screen rules.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_114873\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114873\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-114873\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3925526766_8410bf2195-400x282.jpg\" alt=\"children and technology\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3925526766_8410bf2195-400x282.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3925526766_8410bf2195.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-114873\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/if\/3925526766\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">raYmon<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Every family\u2019s rules will be different, but having set time limits appeals to a lot of parents.<\/strong> For younger children you could stick with an hour a day \u2013 this is plenty when they don\u2019t need to be online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For older children who need tech for homework tasks, it can work better to<\/strong> split screen activities and have separate time limits for recreation (e.g. gaming\/ social media) versus functional purposes, such as reading on a Kindle or (genuine) homework research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Think too about whether there are there are times of day or situations when you\u2019d like to ban screen use altogether. <\/strong>Perhaps during meals, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/family-gathering-tips.htm\">when relatives visit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another option is to only allow gadgets after certain other requirements are met, <\/strong>such as homework, or certain chores.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A ban on phone and tablets in bedrooms at night is certainly wise for most children.<\/strong> By insisting they are left downstairs, you remove the option to log in after lights out.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Once you\u2019ve got an initial idea of the rules you\u2019d like to introduce, sit down as a family and discuss them. Are there any reasonable ones that you or the kids might want to suggest for the grown-ups? Print or write out your new family rules and stick them up on the fridge or similar.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2. Have clear consequences for breaking the rules.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Most effective is simply reducing their<\/strong> screen access further if they can\u2019t stick with what\u2019s been agreed. You\u2019ll need to be prepared to follow through with this though, even if it means much whining and being told \u2018I hate you\u2019 by your child.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember that parenting is about doing the right thing for<\/strong> your kids, not being popular.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>3. Use tech to manage tech.<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>New \u2018parental control\u2019 services and apps are launching all the time, designed to<\/strong> help manage family screen usage and enhance online safety. Go in for a digital detox.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>A digital detox can make a significant difference to your child\u2019s experience of tech, reminding them of<\/strong> what they could be doing instead of staring at a screen, and helping wean them off that feeling of wanting to go online all the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It doesn&#8217;t have to be for a long time. Your detox could be on a<\/strong> particular day\/ afternoon every week, with only occasional longer periods, such as a holiday somewhere with no wifi and poor mobile coverage that forces a detox.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If your children need phones to contact you when going out independently,<\/strong> \u2018dumb phones\u2019 can be purchased for as little as \u00a315 online and used for calls only.<\/p>\n<h3>Suspect your child has an actual screen addiction?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Addiction is not a cut and dry situation, and would be more involved than just tech itself.<\/strong> It is very helpful to offer your child the chance to talk to someone unbiased and outside the family, such as a counsellor or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/child-psychologist-london.htm\"> child psychologist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addiction is connected to family dynamics, so another option is to consider<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/family-therapist-london.htm\">family counselling<\/a>, where you can together look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">communication patterns<\/a> and unresolved past issues that might be causing your child or teen to act out.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Harley Therapy connects you with highly experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/child-psychologist-london.htm\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">child psychologists<\/span> <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/family-therapist-london.htm\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\">family therapists<\/span><\/a> in central London.
