Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is feeling overwhelmed with life something you deal with often? In ways others don\u2019t seem to understand?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The definition of overwhelm <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Overwhelm means everything suddenly seems too much, and we don&#8217;t believe we can manage.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">While some types of overwhelm are quite typical and with obvious triggers, there are other types of overwhelm that are harder to explain, and can actually be a sign of mental health issues at play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Typical reasons for feeling overwhelmed with life<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There are some things that overwhelm anyone, because they are outside the<\/strong> range of normal human experience and considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">traumas<\/a>. This could be an accident, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-as-a-result-of-natural-disasters.htm\">natural disaster<\/a>, or witnessing a crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Other common reasons for overwhelm are<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">life changes<\/a> that take time to process, such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/university-and-depression-survival-guide-students.htm\"> going away to school<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">breakups<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-tell-your-child-you-are-getting-a-divorce.htm\">divorce<\/a>, a new and challenging position at work, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And of course we all have our limits over <\/strong>what we can and can\u2019t manage, time and energy wise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">We can all feel overwhelmed if, for example, we:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">are given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">too much to do at work<\/a> or are under tight deadline<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">slept poorly<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">are ill<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/menopause-anxiety.htm\">hormonal<\/a> and have to navigate a full day<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">are put in charge of others who challenge us in ways we aren\u2019t prepared for<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/performance-anxiety-help-guide.htm\">have to do a presentation<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In these cases overwhelm is a feeling that signifies we are<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">experiencing stress<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Stress is a response to a trigger we can pinpoint. Left unchecked, stress can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/burnout-symptoms-treatment-tips.htm\">burnout<\/a>. But with the right support,\u00a0 we can troubleshoot the situation and take steps to get through to the other side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why do I feel overwhelmed when others don\u2019t? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But what if you are feeling overwhelmed with life and you <i>can\u2019t <\/i>pinpoint a logic reason why?<\/strong> Leaving you embarrassed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed<\/a>? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes it\u2019s that \u2018straw that broke the camel\u2019s back\u2019 feeling. But for some of us it\u2019s like<\/strong> a storm descends and we feel<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\"> lost in our reactions<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\"> big emotions<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The dishwasher doesn\u2019t work and you are suddenly sitting on the floo<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\">r crying<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Someone gives typical feedback on a presentation but you are overwhelmed with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-issues-signs.htm\"> inappropriate rage<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A partner says they are going out with friends and you are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\"> lost to a strange panic<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A passing vehicle toots its horn at someone and you are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\"> overwhelmed by fear<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Going to the doctor gives you a strange fatigue and a foggy mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_115110\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8458284970_53e716b5cd.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115110\" class=\"wp-image-115110 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8458284970_53e716b5cd-400x299.jpg\" alt=\"feeling overwhelmed with life\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8458284970_53e716b5cd-400x299.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8458284970_53e716b5cd.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-115110\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/fotologic\/8458284970\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">fotologic<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>These kinds of overwhelm seem illogic because the response doesn\u2019t <\/strong>match <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">the present moment<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This happens when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-memories-are-they-real.htm\">unresolved past issues<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconsciously<\/a> driving our responses. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Psychological issues that cause overwhelm <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So what sorts of past-related mental health issues might be driving your issue with overwhelm? <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">Anxiety<\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Is your overwhelm physical, and triggered by a panicked thought? Your heart pounds, you feel sweaty, your stomach clenches? Are you always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">mentally considering potential dangers<\/a>? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress, anxiety<\/a> does not tend to have a logical cause. Or we troubleshoot one thing that is causing us to feel anxious, only to feel anxious about something else entirely. It is a fear-based way of thinking that triggers the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\"> fight, flight, or freeze mode<\/a>, meaning we are both mentally and physically overwhelmed. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">2. <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">Depression<\/a>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Are you overwhelmed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">unexplainable sadness<\/a>? And feelings that you have no future, or that things are irreparably wrong with you? Do you even feel so overwhelmed you don\u2019t want to see friends or leave the house? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">Depression<\/a> means we<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\"> feel hopeless<\/a> and without a future, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">mired in shame<\/a> about our past. It too can be quite physical, with our limbs feeling made of lead and our head full of sand. Do environments and experiences trigger your fight, flight or freeze response? A knock on the door, a certain smell, a certain type of person? And did you live through a trauma? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/a> can leave you feeling overwhelmed several times a day. Your mind and body are stuck on high response mode. You might struggle with things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">sleep issues,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-and-personality-disorders.htm\">anger problems<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-dual-diagnosis.htm\">addictions<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Complex PTSD.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Does the above sound familiar, but there was not one exact \u2018big trauma\u2019? But rather you lived through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">difficult childhood experiences<\/a>? Or repeat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-think-i-was-abused-as-a-child.htm\">sexual abuse?<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">Complex PTSD<\/a> is a long-term and ongoing trauma response that sees you easily overwhelmed. You can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\">more emotional that others<\/a>, and also jumpy, tense, with physical symptoms like constant colds and flu and stomach upset.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\">Adult ADHD<\/a>.leaves you feeling overwhelmed with life.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Does overwhelm happen for you because you often just feel like there is so much to be done that you can\u2019t keep up? Or because others can\u2019t keep with you or keep misunderstanding you? And you either feel enraged or like crying? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\">Adult attention deficit disorder<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> (ADHD) <\/span><\/a>can cause a lot of frustration and overwhelm. It means your brain is constantly whirring, causing your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-case-study.htm\">problems with focus<\/a>, attention, organisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/need-more-time.htm\">time management<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/always-moving-too-fast-in-a-relationship.htm\">relationships<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Autism.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Do you feel overwhelmed by environments? Too many sounds, colours, lights, too much talking? Do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-alexithymia.htm\">other people\u2019s emotions feel too much for you<\/a> to handle? And does too much change to your schedule make you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic<\/a>?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-autism-spectrum-disorder.htm\">Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)<\/a>\u00a0 refers to a range of symptoms that see you more reactive to sensory experiences and less emotional than others. You can also struggle with changes to routine.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Anxious attachment.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Do you only feel overwhelmed when you are in a relationship? Right when you should feel happy and in love, do you secretly feel panicky, uncertain, and even struggle to relax and sleep?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\">Anxious attachment<\/a> happens when we did not have a parent or caregiver we could rely on for unconditional love and attention as a young child. Either our parent was unreliable, leaving us uncertain we were safe, or we were only given love if we appeased them. The end result is that we connect love with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\"> anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">Borderline personality disorder<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Do you have emotional \u2018storms\u2019? Feel calm one minute, then an emotional wreck the next? Fly into a rage, or end up in a puddle of tears? Do others call you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-oversensitive.htm\">oversensitive<\/a>, and do you punish people if you think they might abandon you? Do you tend to have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\"> fiery but short-lived relationships<\/a>? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-relationships.htm\">Borderline personality disorder (BPD)<\/a> usually stems for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/were-you-sexually-abused-as-a-child.htm\">sexual abuse<\/a> that has affected your emotional \u2018thermostat\u2019 and ability to self regulate. A main symptom is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-private-hell-of-rejection-why-does-it-keep-happening-to-you.htm\">fear of rejection<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-abandonment.htm\">abandonment<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">9. Primarily obsessional OCD.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Do you have strange thoughts you are ashamed of that totally overwhelm you? That might be sexual or violent in nature? And do you then have patterns of thinking or behaviour to deal with these thoughts, like mental checklists, praying or repeating things in your head, or excessively researching to &#8216;prove&#8217; you are okay?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Primarily obsessional OCD, or what sufferers call &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/pure-o-pure-ocd.htm\">Pure OCD<\/a>&#8220;, is a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\">obsessive compulsive disorder<\/a> that means your head is a constant storm of extreme thoughts that are like mental torture.
