Darcy <\/span><\/a>explores what an addictive personality is or isn&#8217;t, and what you can do next if there is a problem.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is addictive personality disorder?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Addictive personality disorder is <\/strong>a theory about why we might have several bad habits we can&#8217;t resist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">But addictive personality disorder isn\u2019t a clinical diagnosis, n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">or is an \u2018addictive personality\u2019. <\/span>There is actually no research proving<\/strong>\u00a0that addiction is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personality-disorder-vs-personality-trait.htm\">personality trait<\/a> or set of exact personality traits.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">Alan R. Lang was the psychologist <\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1983\/01\/18\/science\/the-addictive-personality-common-traits-are-found.html\">whose 1983 study<\/a><\/span> <\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">was seized by the media and triggered the idea of an &#8216;addictive personality&#8217;, when it suggested contributing personality &#8216;factors&#8217; (not traits) for addiction. But he himself concluded that,&#8221;there is no single, unique personality entity that is a necessary and sufficient condition for substance use.&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">And there<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0is also the small issue that the definition of \u2018addiction\u2019 itself<\/strong> is still debated.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">All this aside, it is true that there is a list of several personality traits that, in combination, can mean you are <em>more likely<\/em> to develop addictions, or lead to a <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">personality disorder<\/a> that makes you more susceptible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And these personality traits or disorders, combined with things like genetics, meet with<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">difficult environments<\/a> that then become a recipe for addiction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The dangers of the &#8216;addictive personality&#8217; myth<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Clinical professor of social work Maryann Amadeo points out in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.3109\/10826084.2015.1007646?scroll=top&amp;needAccess=true\">her paper &#8216;the Addictive Personality&#8217;<\/a> that the idea of an &#8216;addictive personality&#8217; reinforces &#8220;the pathologising, stigmatising, marginalisation, and homogenising of individuals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_117038\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/33094429474_38c2fd7954.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117038\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117038\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/33094429474_38c2fd7954-400x265.jpg\" alt=\"addictive personality disorder\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/33094429474_38c2fd7954-400x265.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/33094429474_38c2fd7954.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/33094429474_38c2fd7954-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/amira_a\/33094429474\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">amir appel<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>And you can be using the concept against yourself, if you are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling beyond help &#8216;because you have an addictive personality&#8217;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">or using it as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/popular-excuses-to-not-seek-professional-help.htm\"> an excuse to not even try to seek support<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">letting an \u2018addictive personality\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-sense-of-self-who-am-i.htm\">define and limit who you are<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>denying or refusing to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">difficult past experiences<\/a> and triggers as it&#8217;s &#8216;just your personality&#8217;<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">or, in some cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">assuming you aren\u2019t an addict (when you are)<\/a> as you aren\u2019t the \u2018type\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Addictive personality traits and disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So what are those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personality-disorder-vs-personality-trait.htm\">personality traits<\/a> that<em> could<\/em> make you more likely to become addict? Again, there is no exact formula here. But the list includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">impulsivity<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>difficulty delaying gratification<\/li>\n<li>easily<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> stressed or depressed\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">risk taking behaviour and a desire for new experiences <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">neuroticism (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\"> easily negative<\/a>)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">prone to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-antisocial-personality-disorder.htm\"> social isolation<\/a> over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">connection<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>attracted to non-conformity<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">carelessness\/ not prone to taking responsibility.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As for personality disorders, there are some that involve quite a few of the above traits <\/strong>and are connected to a higher risk for addiction. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-antisocial-personality-disorder.htm\">antisocial personality disorde<\/a>r.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Genetics and addiction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><b>Genetics also can mean you are more vulnerable.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><strong>You might genetically<\/strong> struggle to metabolise alcohol, or have a genetic disposition to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\">anxious and sad<\/a> and therefore be more likely to seek solace in substances.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Of course a genetic dispositions need environments that trigger and feed them to become a problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This is illustrated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3195419\/\">a study<\/a> led by Italian researcher Francesca Ducci looking into<\/strong> the MAOA gene (also called &#8216;the warrior gene&#8217; as it makes us assertive and aggressive) and it&#8217;s relation to alcoholism and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-think-i-was-abused-as-a-child.htm\">abuse<\/a>. In the women she studied, those with low MAOA activity who<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/were-you-sexually-abused-as-a-child.htm\"> were abused<\/a> were very likely to become alcoholics, whereas those with high MAOA activity who suffered abuse weren&#8217;t. It took both the gene and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\"> the trauma<\/a> for the pattern to exist.<\/p>\n<h3>Environmental influences that lead to addiction<\/h3>\n<p><em>So what sorts of &#8216;environments&#8217; could leave you vulnerable to addiction? The ones that leave you vulnerable in general.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The biggest is<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trauma-therapy-what-works.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>. This could be physical or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">sexual abuse<\/a>. Or you might have lived through a terrifying experience, such as an accident, or watching someone get attacked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your life might have been filled with difficulties that were too much for any child, called<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">&#8216;adverse childhood experiences&#8217; (ACEs)<\/a>. These include a parent being mentally ill or an addict,\u00a0 emotional or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/honesty-criticism-or-verbal-abuse.htm\">verbal abuse<\/a>, neglect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-effects-of-divorce-on-children.htm\">parents divorcing<\/a>, or a parent going to jail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not feeling loved is its own kind of trauma, resulting in<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-styles.htm\"> attachment issues<\/a> as an adult. If your parent was emotionally unavailable, or you couldn&#8217;t trust them, or they made you &#8216;earn&#8217; love by being what they wanted, you can end up anxious or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">unable to connect<\/a> and with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\"> low self-esteem<\/a>, and things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">drugs<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">alcohol<\/a> can become a respite.<\/p>\n<p>And<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-parents-are-you-one.htm\"> bad parenting<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK64258\/\">has been linked to addiction.<\/a> This includes constantly negative communication, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/conflicting-parenting-styles.htm\">parental inconsistency<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\">unrealistic expectations<\/a>, and parental denial.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But I really do have an addictive personality <\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_117039\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1246825519_dbb931e05d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117039\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117039\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1246825519_dbb931e05d-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"addictive personality traits\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1246825519_dbb931e05d-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1246825519_dbb931e05d.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117039\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spine\/1246825519\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">rick<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It can certainly feel that way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you have one addiction, you are more likely to then develop another.<\/strong> You might be an alcoholic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-myths-about-sex-addiction.htm\">sex addict<\/a>, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workaholic-symptoms.htm\">workaholic<\/a> with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">overeating problem<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And often, if we try to give up an addiction, we end up replacing it with another.<\/strong> Alcoholics often start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-new-eating-disorders.htm\">bingeing on sugary foods<\/a> when trying to quit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But again, these come down to a combination of other reasons and ways of coping that depend on many factors, not on your personality.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What to do if you feel you have an addiction problem<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Addiction is an \u2018umbrella\u2019 word. It covers many different<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compulsive-gambling-personality-disorder.htm\">difficult habits<\/a>, an immense amount of research, and also a lot of controversy over what it is and isn\u2019t. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">But if you have a habit that:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> you can\u2019t seem to control or stop<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">and you are preoccupied with\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">it\u2019s negatively affecting your life<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">and you seem to need more of it, the longer time goes on? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Then instead of wondering why you are struggling, or if it is or isn\u2019t addiction, and is or isn&#8217;t down to your personality traits, why not just seek some support?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Time to face your addictive habits head on and claim back your life and peace of mind?
