Or <\/strong>something that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">wakes you up at night<\/a>? You need to learn about &#8216;death anxiety&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2>Is a fear of death normal?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s normal to fear the unknown. And, while other cultures celebrate<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-losing-loved-ones.htm\"> death<\/a>, such as Mexico\u2019s famous \u2018Day of the Dead\u2019, most of Western society doesn&#8217;t discuss death much.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong> This is changing with the popularity of \u2018death cafes\u2019 and \u2018death doulas\u2019. But<\/strong> in general, most people are uneducated about what death entails, and feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">mild anxiety<\/a> thinking about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>In some ways this mild anxiety about our mortality, triggered by things like<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">losing a loved one<\/a>, reading about a tragedy, or a health scare, is useful.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">It reminds us to make the most of our lives. To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">take care of our health<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">seek purpose<\/a>, and to make time for those we love.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>When is it &#8216;death anxiety&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<p><em>Are thoughts of death and dying are often nagging at you? Is your lifestyle increasingly dictated by this fear?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fear of death and dying is at the point you need support if you:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>think about death <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">in a negative way<\/a> daily<\/li>\n<li>allow<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overanalyse-choice-paralysis.htm\"> life choices<\/a> to be dictated by your fear of death<\/li>\n<li>have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a> because you wake up thinking about death<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">distance yourself from others<\/a> when you have death anxiety<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/involuntary-childlessness-depression.htm\">avoid having the children<\/a> you want in case you die in birth<\/li>\n<li>don\u2019t do necessary health procedures because of fear of dying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is thanatophobia?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Thanatophobia is not an official psychological diagnosis. It is instead a popular term <\/strong>used to refer to a general fear of death and death anxiety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If thinking of death is causing you serious symptoms, you might instead receive a diagnosis of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).<\/a> This would mean your thoughts of death and dying are increasingly illogic and give you symptoms like heart palpitations, sweating, dizziness, stomach pain, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic attacks<\/a>. You might also feel agitated, moody, and withdraw from usual social activity.<\/p>\n<h2>Other mental health issues connected to a fear of dying<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_117356\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3936948523_0f98848468.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117356\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3936948523_0f98848468-400x288.jpg\" alt=\"fear of death and dying\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3936948523_0f98848468-400x288.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3936948523_0f98848468.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/si_b\/3936948523\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Si B<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>If you already suffer from<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>, you are more likely to have death anxiety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thoughts of death and dying could also be connected to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\">obsessive compulsive disorder<\/a>. In this case, obsessive thinking about death then causes an ordered, repeated reaction, such as a series of tasks you do to \u2018save\u2019 yourself or those you love from death. This could be physical, like hand washing or ordering, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/pure-o-pure-ocd.htm\">mental compulsions<\/a>, like a checklist you go through repeatedly.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it really death you are afraid of?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sometimes it\u2019s not actually <em>all<\/em> things related to dying that is causing you upset.<\/strong> By identifying the actual trigger for your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-an-anxiety-attack.htm\"> anxiety<\/a>, you can shrink the cloud you sense hovering behind you, and deal with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fears-and-phobias.htm\">phobia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What part of death is scary for you? Is it one of the below<\/strong>, or a combination? Are you afraid of;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-pain-chronic.htm\">pain<\/a> and suffering?<\/li>\n<li>what lies beyond death?<\/li>\n<li>worries there is a hell?<\/li>\n<li>dying young?<\/li>\n<li>causing people upset and responsibility?<\/li>\n<li>not having done enough with your life?<\/li>\n<li>being forgotten?<\/li>\n<li>your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talking-to-children-about-death-and-dying.htm\">children <\/a>being without you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to feel less afraid of death and dying<\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5812065\/#ref2\">2018 review of research on fear of death and dying<\/a> led by King\u2019s College in London <strong>identified the following as traits found in people who do not suffer a fear of death. They are all things you can work to have in your life:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">self-esteem<\/a><\/li>\n<li>religious beliefs<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">good health<\/a><\/li>\n<li>a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\"> sense of fulfilment<\/a> in life<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/get-closer-intimacy-issues.htm\">intimacy<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/family-estrangement.htm\">family<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friendship-and-love.htm\"> friends<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">a fighting spirit<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_117357\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8208020302_f43156dfa4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117357\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8208020302_f43156dfa4-400x286.jpg\" alt=\"death anxiety\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8208020302_f43156dfa4-400x286.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/8208020302_f43156dfa4.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rundwolf\/8208020302\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">aka Tman<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Or try giving yourself credit for what you have<\/strong> been and done.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Erikson%27s_stages_of_psychosocial_development\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">famous psychological model by psychologist Erik Erickson<\/span> <\/a>dictates eight stages of personal growth in a lifetime. It has, as a final stage, \u2018ego integrity versus despair\u2019. The idea is that if we\u00a0 reflect on our life\u2019s ups and downs, what we did and didn\u2019t achieve, and find acceptance, we gain integrity, and can avoid the despair that death can otherwise bring.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Educate yourself about death and dying<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If it\u2019s fear of the unknown that gives you death anxiety, there is nothing negative or morbid about educating yourself about death.<\/strong> Approach it as practical research.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Find a local \u2018death cafe\u2019 where<\/strong> people in the community talk frankly about death together.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speak with a \u2018death doula\u2019, a person certified to<\/strong> help families and individuals navigate the death process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Look at the ways different cultures and religions<\/strong> approach death.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read about near death experiences.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Or even try a \u2018virtual\u2019 out of body experience (OBE). In an interesting if<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #666699; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0169343\">limited small study<\/a><\/span>, a group that was given the sensation of an out of body experience using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/virtual-reality-therapy.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">virtual reality<\/span><\/a> had a lowered fear of death, as opposed to the control group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Seek support for death anxiety<\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a> will be more than happy to discuss your fear of death and dying.
