When all your compulsions play out in your head?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><em>Writer <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Jenni Brooks<\/span> shares her personal journey of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/pure-o-pure-ocd.htm\">primarily obsessional OCD<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">How it all began<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>&#8220;When I was seven, I got scarlet fever<\/strong>. I was put on antibiotics and had two weeks off school. After that period was up, I seemed fine. Physically, at least. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>After my first day back at school I watched the Guinness World Records on TV. There was a section in<\/strong> which a woman swallowed a sword and then pulled it up again without damaging her organs. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">After the episode finished, I wondered what would happen if I went into the kitchen, picked up a knife, and swallowed it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong> I remember thinking that thought was strange. <\/strong>I knew I didn\u2019t want to ram a knife down my throat. But the more I thought about it the harder it was to stop thinking about it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>After that, I started getting many other disturbing thoughts.<\/strong> What if I stabbed my sister to death while she was sleeping? What if I gorged my own eyes out? Or if I shaved my head?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">And then came my breaking point<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong> I finally reached breaking point while on a family holiday to Greece<\/strong> a few months later. In a public bathroom I saw a bottle of bleach and wondered what would happen if I drank it. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">This triggered a three hour <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-nervous-breakdown.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">meltdown<\/span><\/a>. And afterwards I couldn\u2019t even relax in our hotel room, because I knew there was a bottle of bleach next to the toilet. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Struggling to get therapy\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_117553\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117553\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3422027845_b49721d196-1-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"overcoming ocd\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3422027845_b49721d196-1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3422027845_b49721d196-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-117553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ashl33\/3422027845\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Ashlee Martin<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">After coming back from Greece, my parents took me to see my GP.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I was referred to my local<\/strong> <strong>children\u2019s hospital, because<\/strong> my GP thought I may have a rare condition called PANDAS Syndrome. This is where a strep infection triggers an autoimmune response that attacks part of the brain. It can cause a range of rapid onset neuropsychiatric conditions, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-counselling-london-ocd.htm\">obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong> After one appointment at the hospital, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling-psychologist-london.htm\">psychologist <\/a>decided not to proceed with any treatment.<\/strong> My symptoms were too puzzling. I wasn\u2019t displaying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\">typical OCD symptoms<\/a>, like excessive hand-washing. Instead, my main symptoms were excruciating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-intrusive-thoughts.htm\">intrusive thoughts<\/a> with no overt compulsions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I guess there just wasn&#8217;t as much talk then, even with<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/therapists.htm\">mental health practitioners<\/a>, about &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/pure-o-pure-ocd.htm\">pure O<\/a>&#8216;, primarily obsessional OCD. Where your compulsions take place in your mind. Which is why I&#8217;m writing this case study about overcoming OCD. So fewer kids like me get overlooked.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">My OCD symptoms just got worse<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000080;\"> After being discharged from hospital my symptoms didn\u2019t get better, they got worse. And I also had the added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilt<\/a> of believing that I made up my symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>No one told me why I got discharged. <\/strong>I was left to assume that I had put it on for attention<strong>.<\/strong> After that I no longer felt able to tell anyone what I was going through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">I kept this up for six years. She asked my mum to leave the room so I could talk to her on my own.<\/strong> She told me that I wouldn\u2019t tell her anything that would shock her, because she\u2019d heard it all before.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><strong>At first, I refused to tell her my thoughts because I was so ashamed of them. But after a while, she passed me a notebook<\/strong> and told me to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">write them down<\/a>. This helped greatly because this way I didn\u2019t have to say them out loud.<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">This appointment in particular helped me a great deal, because it was the first time I ever really <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-ignored-how-to-get-people-to-listen.htm\">felt listened to<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><strong>She told me that I definitely had a form of OCD. Just having a diagnosis made me feel just a little less <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed<\/a>. It meant that I wasn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">alone<\/a> and that there were countless other people going through the same thing as I was, fighting against and overcoming OCD.<\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">The wait for an NHS therapist<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><strong>At the end of my appointment my GP said that she would <\/strong>refer me to child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><strong>Unfortunately there was a<\/strong> <strong>6-month waiting list<\/strong> for an NHS therapist. And I was constantly worried I was going to act on my intrusions. And that was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed.htm\"> making me depressed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-happy-why-is-it-so-hard.htm\">unhappy<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>My school work suffered because I <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">couldn\u2019t concentrate.<\/a> I even found it hard to eat at times, because my<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"> anxiety<\/a> made me feel so nauseous.<\/span><\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Trying therapy with the NHS<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\">\n<p><strong>In the end I had a six-month course of <\/strong>cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) on the NHS. I liked the therapist, but this sort of therapy focuses on looking at your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">unbalanced thoughts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_117551\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117551\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4517636491_8296ffb993-1-266x400.jpg\" alt=\"overcoming ocd\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4517636491_8296ffb993-1-266x400.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4517636491_8296ffb993-1.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-117551\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/joehoughton\/4517636491\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Joe Houghton<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Because I was so ashamed of my thoughts<\/strong>, I didn\u2019t feel comfortable enough to discuss them in much detail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><strong>This was especially the case with my thoughts about sex, <\/strong>because they were so painful and embarrassing to talk about. My therapist didn\u2019t push me to talk about them because they could see how uncomfortable they made me.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Maybe this is why I didn\u2019t get much out of my therapy, because I didn\u2019t open up as much as I could have done.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><strong>I tried another three months of CBT when I was seventeen,<\/strong> but it still wasn&#8217;t working for me.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"ydpacaa53cbyahoo-style-wrap\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\" data-setdir=\"false\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><strong>Then when I was 19, I also had a course of exposure therapy for 6 weeks. <\/strong>Exposure therapy aims to expose sufferers to triggers, so that they feel more comfortable being around them. For instance, if a sufferer is fearful of germs, they may be made to not wash their hands after blowing their nose, just so that they can see that they wouldn\u2019t catch a serious disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><strong>I didn\u2019t have any overt triggers that exacerbated my symptoms because<\/strong> my OCD was purely focused on intrusive thoughts. So I didn\u2019t find this type of therapy very helpful. I think you&#8217;d need to work with an exposure therapist who was a specialist is purely obsessional OCD to have results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"ydpacaa53cbyahoo-style-wrap\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\" data-setdir=\"false\">\n<h3 class=\"ydpe51232a8MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">What therapy works for overcoming OCD?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>In the end I decided to save up so I could get private therapy instead. Then I could see someone straight away<\/strong>, instead of going back to my GP to be put on yet another waiting list. I could also pick and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-a-good-therapist.htm\">choose which therapy was right for me<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong> In the past few months I have been seeing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/integrative-therapy-london.htm\">integrative therapist<\/a>. And I finally have a feeling I am moving forward.<\/strong> My therapist combines elements of different therapies, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/dialectical-behaviour-therapy-london.htm\">dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>and mixes them together to make it more individualised for each client.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><strong>What is different this time is that my sessions are<\/strong> less focused on my symptoms themselves, and more focused on how they came about in the first place. I<span class=\"s1\">nstead of addressing my thoughts head on, we are instead going through the reasons as to why I\u2019m having the thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><strong>At first, I was quite guarded with this new therapist, but this was probably because<\/strong> I had been disappointed so much in the past and I was doubtful that this type of therapy would work and see me overcoming OCD. But now I&#8217;m feeling hopeful.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Me, beneath the OCD<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I have noticed that a lot of my thoughts seem to be orientated as to whether what I\u2019m experiencing is true or false. Am I making up my symptoms?<\/strong> Am I actually good at my job? Did I accidentally kill someone 3 years ago?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Now I know that the pattern of these thoughts stem from when I was little, and I was convinced I had made my symptoms up. This is why they have taken on that theme. I still subconsciously don\u2019t know if my symptoms are real or fake.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Although my intrusive thoughts may never go away completely, knowing why these<\/strong> patterns re-occur has made my life a lot easier. I can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">rationalise my thoughts<\/a> in a way I couldn\u2019t before because I know why they are happening. I no longer feel defined by them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">You are not alone<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you have OCD, remember that your thoughts don\u2019t define you, and<\/strong> having distressing thoughts doesn\u2019t mean that you\u2019re going to act on them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Even though the thoughts you are having are horrifying and<\/strong> alienating, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">there are countless others who are going through the same struggle as you are.
