How to get through it without saying or doing things you&#8217;ll regret? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why is Christmas stressful for families?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>First of all, know you are not alone in finding any kind of family Xmas dinner a bit of a nightmare.<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dysfunctional-family-help.htm\"> Family dynamics<\/a> tend to quickly surface with a bit of Christmas cheer, aka<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\"> alcohol<\/a>. And our family can struggle to see us as the adult we have become and not the child they knew, ditto for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-sibling-rivalry-stop.htm\">siblings who can ignite old rivalries<\/a>. Also, if you are visiting a partner&#8217;s family, they might be very protective despite themselves.<\/p>\n<h2>How to survive Christmas dinner with family<\/h2>\n<p>Use tricks and recommendations that therapists and coaches do to survive Xmas dinner with your sanity intact.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Reflect like a star. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Listening is a kind of magic. It puts others at ease<\/strong>, and the more they talk about themselves, the more they like you (yes, even your future mother-in-law). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>True, counsellors spend years learning <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\">how to be a highly attuned listener<\/a>. But you can learn key tips. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>First, don\u2019t be planning what to say next in your head, <\/strong>which means you come across as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">distracted<\/a>.\u00a0Just fully focus on what the person is saying, repeating it in your head if it helps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Then do what is called \u2018reflecting back\u2019. This means you take what they said and<\/strong> repeat it back, with slight variation. \u201cI ran the marathon ten times and hurt my back.\u201d\/ \u201cYou ran the marathon ten times but and ended up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">an injury<\/a>?\u201d. The other person rarely realises you are repeating what they say, but will continue on, feeling good they are being listened to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This is also a great technique to use if you are stuck talking with a family member who tends to be nosy or to upset you.<\/strong> It stops you from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">reacting<\/a>. And if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/understanding-people.htm\">misunderstood<\/a> their seemingly rude comment, it gives them a chance to clear up the mistake and explain what they really meant. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. It then also sends the person down a \u2018rabbit hole\u2019 of analysis. Why<em> did<\/em> they do that, after all?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are often accused of being too &#8216;intense&#8217;, you are<\/strong> probably asking too many &#8216;why&#8217; questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8216;What&#8217; and &#8216;How&#8217; questions, on the other hand, are more forward looking, or more factual. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For example, imagine someone tells you,<\/strong> &#8220;This is the first year I am away from my kids&#8221;. If you ask, \u201cWhy is that?\u201d is very wide and can seem<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/judging-people-why-we-do-it.htm\"> judgemental<\/a>. But, \u201cHow is that going for you?\u201d, or &#8220;What are you going to do instead?\u201d are more manageable and useful questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Set clear boundaries.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>How are your boundaries with family? Do you feel like each get together you end up<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/people-pleaser-meaning.htm\">agreeing to things you don\u2019t want to do<\/a>? Or end up humiliated by the retelling of the same horrible childhood stories? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">our article on saying no<\/a> before you go to Christmas dinner and be ready to say it loud and clear. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And take aside that family member who loves to tell stories. Keep it calm and<\/strong> friendly, and between you and them. Start with a positive then set the boundary. You appreciate they love making people laugh , but this year you don\u2019t want the stories told, end of (if you are worried about how to word things, read our article, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">How to Communicate Under Stress<\/a>&#8220;).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Show &#8220;unconditional positive regard&#8221;. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unconditional-positive-regard-what-it-is-and-why-you-need-it.htm\">Unconditional positive regard<\/a>, or \u201cUPR\u201d, was created by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/benefits-of-therapy-carl-rogers.htm\">Carl Rogers<\/a>, the father of person-centred counselling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>UPR isn\u2019t about pretending to like others, or overlooking their bad behaviour.<\/strong> And it certainly isn\u2019t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sympathy-and-empathy.htm\"> sympathy<\/a>, feeling sorry for someone, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\">codependency<\/a>, agreeing or helping even if you don\u2019t want to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>UPR simply means you see others as resourceful humans doing their best.<\/strong> No matter how grating your uncle\u2019s new girlfriend is, just accept she has resources and is doing her best, and notice how the annoyance fades away. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">And when you find yourself dying to <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/giving-advice-in-relationships.htm\">give advice<\/a> ?Note that unwanted advice is a fast route to upsetting others. Just remind yourself, that person has their own resources. You can trust them to find their own way forward. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. You might snap at her. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\">mindful<\/a>, fully in the present?<\/strong> You might notice she is in a good mood and smiling, and truly likes your sweater. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A short<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-psychotherapy.htm\">mindfulness meditation<\/a> before Christmas dinner can make all the difference. (If you want to learn how now, go read our easy &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">Guide to Mindfulness<\/a>&#8220;).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Or use a mindfulness \u2018trick\u2019 whenever you notice you are caught up in<\/strong> your head or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> feeling stressed<\/a> and edgy: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Put your attention on your feet, noticing the ground beneath you. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Or focus on your breath coming in and out and breathe deeply, and on dropping and relaxing your arms and shoulders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Find one thing around you for each of your senses, a colour, a smell, a taste, a sound, a feeling like your shirt on your arm.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>And the best tip for next year&#8217;s Christmas dinner with family?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Is your family always driving you nuts?
