But at the same time I<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\"> found myself grieving<\/a> the child I thought I was having, while also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/loss-of-a-loved-one.htm\">anticipating the loss<\/a> of this child that I loved so much.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Life <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-illness-and-children.htm\">caring for a disabled child<\/a> was hard. But it was about to become even harder.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In November 2014 my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Chemotherapy gave us some time but he died a year later.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I did not have time to grieve as<\/strong> I needed to be strong for my other children.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>My youngest daughter\u2019s health was deteriorating and sadly she also died<\/strong>, a year after her daddy.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">I was devastated and numb. Our family had gone from six to four in just over a year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I needed to hold my other children together and be strong, but I was struggling, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong><span class=\"s2\">I contacted the hospice that had supported m<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>y husband and arranged to<\/strong> see<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>one of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/bereavement-counselling-london.htm\">grief counsellors<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>My first session of grief counselling<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I went along to the first session and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\">cried<\/a> my eyes out. The counsellor was<\/strong> lovely.\u00a0 He asked me to bring along some pictures of Andy to the next session, for me to talk about our life before his cancer diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I enjoyed the sessions, but they were really just skimming the surface when I was struggling to cope.<\/strong> I felt that I had only just begun to process what had happened when the sessions ended (the hospice only offered six sessions as the free service was over-subscribed). So that was that, I thought&#8230;..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">[Need more info on grief? I was filling my car with<\/strong> petrol when a van drove into it and I found myself on the ground with a head injury. I was taken to hospital for checks, but there was no lasting damage, apart from a pounding headache from a concussion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYou do realise you have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\"> PTSD<\/a>,\u201d said my GP, as he wrote out a sick certificate for me. It had taken the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-warning-signs-acute-stress-reaction-emotional-shock.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shock<\/span><\/a> of the accident to make me realise that I was just masking everything by being busy. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">I was running on empty and not dealing with my grief, and all of the feelings were like a pressure cooker bubbling away.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If I wanted to build a new life, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindful-parenting.htm\">be a good role model for my children<\/a>?<\/strong> I needed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-a-therapist.htm\">fully engage in therapy<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Grief counselling, round two<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I started seeing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/bereavement-counselling-london.htm\">psychotherapist who specialised in grief,<\/a> and began to unpick all the complex feelings<\/strong> I had around the loss of my husband and daughter.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>We also looked at the anticipatory grief I had felt with my <\/strong>daughter\u2019s birth, and the stresses of trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talking-to-children-about-death-and-dying.htm\">support my own children through their grief<\/a> while trying to heal myself.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s4\" style=\"color: #333399;\">I was surprised at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-anger.htm\">feelings of anger<\/a> that surfaced. Anger with my husband for dying and leaving me alone to cope with everything. It was a comfort to be told the anger was okay, even normal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I found seeing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">psychotherapist<\/a> very different to seeing the counsellor. <\/strong>\u00a0We covered many things and went way deeper, going back to my childhood and behaviours, and patterns that had been set that were shaping my response to my grief now.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Was grief therapy affordable?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The sessions were admittedly not cheap, and initially I worried about how I would pay for them.<\/strong> But I took it week by week, and somehow managed to fund it. As the work progressed I realised that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/therapist-costs-makes-you-money.htm\">therapy was not a cost but an investment<\/a>. If it helped me cope better, it would help my productivity with work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes I even needed to go to sessions twice a week when I was facing difficult<\/strong> anniversaries. I wanted them to know that it was okay to talk about feelings and look for support.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It did not feel like something to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">be ashamed of<\/a>, but something I\u2019m very proud of doing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What results did I see from therapy for grief and bereavement?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s honestly the best thing I\u2019ve done.<\/strong> I don\u2019t believe I would be in this place I am in without my therapist. <\/span><span class=\"s4\"> I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">sleep better<\/a>, I have less nightmares and flashbacks, and I can process and rationalise what has happened to me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s4\"><strong>Most importantly, I can start to look forward and feel excited about life again. <\/strong>I&#8217;m sad at the loss of my old life, sure.\u00a0 But also excited at the potential of what I can still do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My tips for deciding on grief counselling?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. You need to be ready to really engage with grief counselling.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I found that going so soon after my bereavements I was still quite numb and not ready.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. It\u2019s a rollercoaster, and don&#8217;t expect it not to be. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I don\u2019t believe there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/deaing-with-grief.htm\">five stages of grief<\/a>, it\u2019s not linear.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Grief can hit when you least expect it, and it can encompass all sorts of emotions. I was surprised to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anger-management-help-guide.htm\">feel anger<\/a> towards my late husband for dying.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Be prepared to work at it. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It&#8217;s not easy. A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-a-good-therapist.htm\"> good therapist<\/a> will not let you get off lightly, but the rewards are huge. It\u2019s put me in a much better place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Don&#8217;t look for a friend, look for a good therapist.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yes, you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-the-right-therapist.htm\">feel happy and comfortable with the therapist you choose<\/a>, and you shouldn&#8217;t be afraid to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quitting-therapy.htm\">change your therapist<\/a> if it&#8217;s really not a click.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But also you need to know they will challenge you,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-therapeutic-alliance.htm\">that it&#8217;s a relationship<\/a>.\u00a0 And it can take time to be at ease and have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-dont-trust-my-therapist.htm\"> trust between you and your therapist<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Invest as much as you can afford.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">I went to the therapist that I felt was the best fit with my needs. She wasn\u2019t the most expensive, but she certainly wasn&#8217;t the cheapest. I&#8217;m glad I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/therapist-costs-makes-you-money.htm\">stretched my therapy budget<\/a> a bit as once I started and realised the benefits it was about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">self-care<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s6\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Ready to try grief counselling?
