Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Feeling stuck in life?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/new-year-goals.htm\">Set resolutions that never work<\/a> each year? Never in a career or relationship you like, and just can&#8217;t get ahead no matter how hard you try?<\/p>\n<h2>5 Reasons why being stuck happens<\/h2>\n<p><em>Why does it seem like everyone else can change and move forward but us? There can be several factors at play here.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">1. We were taught to settle for less.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sometimes a life we feel stuck in<\/strong> comes from learning growing up we must do and be certain things and not others. We&#8217;ve mistakenly created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">a life that doesn&#8217;t even match who we are.<\/a> That instead matches other people&#8217;s ideas of what we should be.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2. We are always feeling\u00a0 stuck in life because we are highly self-critical.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sometimes it&#8217;s not even true that we are that stuck. We just have such a<\/strong> harsh criteria for ourselves, we refuse to see the progress we<em>\u00a0<\/em>make. Or have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/impostor-syndrome.htm\"> impostor syndrome <\/a>and don&#8217;t believe we&#8217;ve done anything of value. Then some of us\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/perfectionism-helping-or-harming.htm\">are perfectionist,<\/a> endlessly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">comparing ourselves<\/a> to those with far more life experience or opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We only want to look at a big picture<\/strong> where we are hugely successful, instead of making time to see we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exam-stress.htm\">graduated from a course<\/a>, have found our own apartment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">a new job<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">3. We have mental health issues holding us back.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s hard to get ahead if we are so<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mild-depression.htm\"> depressed<\/a> we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-and-depression.htm\">constant fatigue<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">brain fog<\/a>. Or if we have such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exposure-therapy-for-anxiety.htm\">bad anxiety<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rumination-anxiety.htm\">our mind is constantly troubleshooting everything<\/a>, and we are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleeplessness.htm\"> sleeping badly<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">ADHD<\/a> can mean we never finish things and spread ourselves too thin.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/loss-of-a-pet.htm\"> Grief<\/a>, too, can leave us struggling to cope.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2019.00419\/full\">research study looking at the connection between depression and life satisfaction<\/a> found that men in particular find it hard to feel good about their life when depressed. [1]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">4. We don&#8217;t have resources or a support system.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Much as we might be independent and courageous, it&#8217;s hard to do life<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ask-for-help.htm\">entirely alone<\/a>. We are quite simply afraid of change.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-change.htm\">Fear of change<\/a> can be debilitating. It tends to come for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">difficult childhood<\/a> where change meant bad things, so that now your brain resists change in a misguided effort to keep you safe.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Or sometimes we are afraid to get unstuck and move forward as we aren&#8217;t sure others will love us if we are successful or different. Perhaps at some point in life we were <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-handle-rejection.htm\">rejected<\/a> for <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/iq-tests-helpful-or-dangerous.htm\">being too smart<\/a> or doing well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>10 Ways to stop feeling stuck and make progress at last<\/h2>\n<p><strong>So what to do when you feel stuck in life? How can you finally<\/strong> stop treading water and actually move forward? Sometimes it&#8217;s about getting practical. If we are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\"> in debt<\/a>, we might need to seek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/debt-depression.htm\">debt counselling<\/a>, and swallow our pride and go on benefits, for example.<\/p>\n<p><em>But often getting unstuck in life involves some psychological work.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Dig out limiting beliefs.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Think that you decide your life with your<\/strong> <em>conscious<\/em> thoughts? Think again. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Our conscious thoughts are driven by hidden<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">unconscious beliefs<\/a>. These are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\"> assumptions<\/a> we make as children and decide are \u2018facts\u2019. They can sound like, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">the world is a dangerous place<\/a>\u2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">\u2018you can\u2019t trust anyone<\/a>\u2019, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">I am not worthy of good things<\/a>\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">For example, if you deep down believe you are not worthy of good things how are you going to then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">choose a partner who is good to you<\/a>? Or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0job<\/span> you are not bored in?<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">To get unstuck in life we need to roll up our sleeves, dig deep, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">ask some helpful questions<\/a>, and get honest about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">negative limiting beliefs<\/a> running the show. Then change them to ones that serve us instead of act as constant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\">self-sabotage<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Accept responsibility for the problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The one thing that keeps us well and truly stuck in life?<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/victim-mentality.htm\">victim mentality<\/a>. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">When we think that all the problems in our life are because of other people and situations, we then put all the power <em>outward<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">How can we change anything if we are constantly claiming we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/powerlessness-when-world-events-overwhelm.htm\">powerless<\/a>? <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_136531\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136531\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-136531\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-andrea-piacquadio-3760811-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"breakthrough being stuck\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-andrea-piacquadio-3760811-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-andrea-piacquadio-3760811-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-andrea-piacquadio-3760811-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-andrea-piacquadio-3760811.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-136531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Andrea Piacquadio for Pexels<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When we take responsibility for what we can \u2014 <\/strong>when we accept that we, as adults, chose those experiences, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-healthy-destructive-relationship\">relationships<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\">jobs<\/a>, situations? <\/span><span class=\"s1\">We untie our own hands and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-power-how-to.htm\">claim back power<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>What about in the case of something like<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">childhood trauma?<\/a> This\u00a0 of course wasn\u2019t a choice, and is a terrible thing to live through. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">But it becomes about taking responsibility if we did not choose to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\"> seek help<\/a> as an adult or didn&#8217;t stick out the healing journey. Or if we continue to abuse ourselves through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">bad habits<\/a> and by choosing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexually-abusive-relationship.htm\">abusive relationships<\/a>.\u00a0 These are all things we DO have power over.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Identify values. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Have a life that is fine, but you always feel stuck in?<\/strong>\u00a0 You might<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0be living out the values of others instead of our own. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The classic example here would be a child who learned from their parents<\/strong> they must want stability and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-problems.htm\">wealth<\/a>. Deep down they value <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creativity<\/a> and adventure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But it might equally be you trying to live up to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friendship-and-love.htm\">friend<\/a> or partner&#8217;s values <\/strong>of a \u2018cool, free\u2019 life, when deep down you value stability and calm.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When we<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> identify our personal values<\/span><\/a>, we naturally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">find purpose<\/span><\/a> and passion. And when we then follow our values, we meet people we have things in common with and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">can connect with<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 We are inspired and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/go-with-the-flow.htm\">in &#8216;flow&#8217;<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Lower expectations. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When we have very<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\"> high expectations<\/a> we can end up never happy with what <\/strong>is. We miss the opportunity right in front of us. We don&#8217;t try new things if they don&#8217;t match our expectations, or turn away relationships with people who might have been great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friendship-and-love.htm\">friends or partners.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">No wonder you feel exhausted and like you are treading water. You are in a state of constant resistance instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/accepting-what-is.htm\">acceptance<\/a>. And as famous psychoanalyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/jungian-analyst-london.htm\">Carl Jung<\/a> once said, &#8220;What you resist, persists&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>And maybe, deep down, you are using high expectations to put your life on hold.<\/strong> To <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">keep intimacy at bay<\/span><\/a>. To keep up the idea that <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-fear-of-failure.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you are a failure<\/span><\/a> and to stay feeling stuck in your comfort zone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Create space. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>No, we are not talking about<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/declutter-your-life-tidying.htm\">decluttering your home<\/a> (although that can\u2019t do any harm). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We are talking about decluttering the things in your life that are no <\/strong>longer serving you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is there a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">relationship in your life that has long felt a one-way street<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Things <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">you have said yes to you don\u2019t actually want to do<\/a>? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/hobbies-and-mental-health.htm\">hobby<\/a> or commitment have you actually long been bored of? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Could you declutter things from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">your work life<\/a>? That drink at the pub after work you actually hate, the lunchtime gossip that makes you feel bad?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Are you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">holding onto someone<\/a> who has long let you go? Or who has passed on? Is it time to seek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/grief-counselling.htm\">grief counselling<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">You can&#8217;t step forward if there is no space to step into. Remind yourself you are making room for what you DO want. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Get angry. Or sad. Or angry and sad. Identify the patterns you are stuck in. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Life patterns are very powerful forces.<\/strong>They are what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-schema-therapy.htm\">schema therapy<\/a>, which specialises in pattern breaking, calls &#8216;themes&#8217;. Just like in a film, with a message that all scenes build to, we live our life playing out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">same conflicts<\/a> and behaviours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>To get out of the pattern, you have to admit you are in it.<\/strong> It can feel embarrassing to admit that yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">all your relationships have the same problem.<\/a> That yes, you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">fall into debt<\/a> every time. But it helps.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">9. Do things badly.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Often in life we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/reach-your-full-potential.htm\">stay stuck in our comfort zone<\/a> because we are sure<\/strong> we&#8217;ll be bad at things&#8230; the belief being we have to be good at things to try. Or that we aren&#8217;t allowed to fail. No wonder we are so stuck!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">We need to free ourselves to realise that the point of life is to enjoy things and grow as a person. And that being messy is part of the process, and making mistakes better than not doing anything at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>So pick something you don&#8217;t care too much about and give it a good, messy go.<\/strong> If you have never painted in your life, get some art supplies and do a terrible painting on purpose. If you don&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dance-movement-psychotherapy.htm\">dance<\/a>, find some Youtube tutorials and do an awful job of the steps. Experience<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-a-perfectionist.htm\"> the freedom of imperfection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">10. Get help changing those patterns. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When we are stuck in patterns, we can&#8217;t \u2018see the wood for the trees\u2019. We can trick ourselves each time that<\/strong> \u2018this time is different\u2019.
