Writer <span style=\"color: #333399;\">Anna Frier<\/span> explores. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How serious is stress in pregnancy?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In severe cases where<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\"> stress leads to anxiety<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">depression<\/a> there can be adverse outcomes such as premature birth or low birth weights.(1)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Longer-term, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety<\/a> or other extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/parental-stress.htm\">stress<\/a> during pregnancy, <strong>can have a lasting impact on <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\">children\u2019s neural development<\/a> (2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Even lower levels of stress exposure during pregnancy can have negative effects.<\/strong> Pregnancy usually suppresses the natural immune response in the body and the brain. But when pregnant rats in a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.osu.edu\/study-suggests-a-new-way-to-think-about-the-brains-link-to-postpartum-depression\/\">recent study by Ohio State University<\/a> were put under stress, it triggered an immune response that led to changes in brain function known to be connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depression<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">More research is needed to figure out how these biochemical processes work in humans, but the consensus is that chronic mental stress raises the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/postnatal-depression-symptoms-treatments.htm\">post natal depression (PND)<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Four steps to dealing\u00a0 with stress in pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Fortunately, there are several methods and tools you can use to reduce your stress levels during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4><b><\/b><span class=\"s3\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Understand what your stress factors are<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Take time to map out your stress factors on paper<\/strong>. This means all the things that lately have triggered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">overwhelming emotions<\/a> or set off obsessive<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\"> negative thinking<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Try to be as specific as possible. Don\u2019t<\/strong> write &#8220;my job&#8221;, but note the precise things that cause you stress, whether it\u2019s a certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">annoying colleague<\/a>, a tedious job procedure, or concerns about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\"> an overdue promotion<\/a>, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Depending on how far you are into your pregnancy, <strong>think about what things stress you that didn\u2019t before you were pregnant<\/strong>. Women during pregnancy are more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-be-less-sensitive.htm\">emotionally sensitive<\/a>, which means the threshold for triggering stress will be somewhat lower. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Don&#8217;t forget to <strong>honestly examine all major<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">relationships with family<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\"> friends<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Once your list is done, <strong>try ranking the stress factors by the intensity of their effect<\/strong> on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-wellbeing-initiatives.htm\">emotional wellbeing<\/a>. It\u2019s not always easy to quantitatively compare causes of stress but follow your intuition here. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Next, review the ranked list and <strong>for each stress item take a note of whether it can be avoided or resolved<\/strong> somehow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><span class=\"s3\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Avoid stress where you can.<\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_117779\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/752988424_2bbbbc755f.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117779\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117779\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/752988424_2bbbbc755f-400x302.jpg\" alt=\"stress in pregnancy\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/752988424_2bbbbc755f-400x302.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/752988424_2bbbbc755f.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/64019131@N00\/752988424\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Corina Sanchez<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/declutter-your-life-tidying.htm\">Getting a bunch of small stress factors out of your life <\/a>will add up to a positive cumulative effect, giving you more time to enjoy your pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>While avoidance isn&#8217;t always a healthy tactic in life, <\/strong>pregnancy is not the time to try to sort out long-held issues, but to take a needed pause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things to consider &#8216;putting on pause&#8217; can include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">unhealthy friendships<\/a> that take more from you than they give<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">unnecessary gossip or political discussions at work<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\"> social events<\/a> you don\u2019t want to participate in<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">anything you are doing because of politeness or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">peer pressure<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Again, you can change your mind after you\u2019ve had your baby. But for now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">say no when you want to say no<\/a>. Being pregnant, you deserve a little dose of positive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/can-you-be-selfish-and-still-be-a-good-person.htm\">selfishness<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><b><\/b><span class=\"s3\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Try to resolve stress through openness.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes resolving stress comes down to opening up to others and asking for their help.<\/strong> Have a frank talk with your partner, family, friends, and colleagues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are often uncomfortable with asking for help, remember that<\/strong> others will generally understand that this is a time in your life you need understanding and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">compassion<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Even if the issue will not be resolved or only partially so, the very fact that you took initiative and got it off your chest \u2014 rather than letting your worries consume you internally \u2014 will benefit your mental health and reduce stress levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. This means devoting yourself to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">good self-care<\/a>, such as\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-food.htm\">healthy diet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">proper sleep<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise<\/a> choices that work for your trimester.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Other tools now known to improve stress levels include<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">meditation<\/a>, breathing exercises, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/yoga-for-depression.htm\">yoga<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindfulness<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Try mindfulness to improve mental health.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The NHS carried out a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29843001\/\">a 4-week pilot program<\/a> in 2014 for 86 women (and 69 male partners), <em>showing that even such a shorter program of mindfulness can yield beneficial results in reducing stress, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety, and depression<\/a> in pregnant women<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Practising mindfulness during pregnancy may also positively affect the neural development of the child.<\/strong> This is still a relatively young area of research, but there are some promising signs. One <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/scan\/article\/10\/3\/453\/1656499\">joint 2015 study by European and U.S. <\/a>\u00a0tested the neuro cognitive abilities of 79 babies aged 9 months. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">It looked at their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">ability to focus<\/a> on and tell apart different sounds played to them, and compared them to the mindfulness level the mothers reported during the second trimester.
