This was echoed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulsus.com\/scholarly-articles\/erectile-dysfunction-the-perspectives-of-patients-and-partners-on-counselling.html\">2014 study in Canada<\/a> that concluded 24% of men aged 16 to 21 had ED difficulties.<\/span> (2,3)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Isn&#8217;t erectile dysfunction a physical issue?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It can be related to medication<\/strong>, which adds to the reason it is more common in older men who are more likely to be taking medication. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And there is an age component.<\/strong> Older men do need more stimulation to have an erection and need more time between erections. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In younger men with erectile dysfunction<\/strong>, it can be caused by narcotics abuse, alcoholism and certain rare diseases. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">Erectile dysfunction and psychology<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_117951\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14084495579_d71266aeca.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117951\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117951\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14084495579_d71266aeca-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"erectile dysfunction\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14084495579_d71266aeca-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14084495579_d71266aeca-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14084495579_d71266aeca.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/91262622@N02\/14084495579\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">jseliger2<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Performance anxiety is<\/strong> definitely a contributing factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Once men have first noticed erection problems<\/strong>, they often obsess about it during sex, and their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worrying-to-much.htm\">worries<\/a> affect future erections. In young men, it can be worries about being new to sex, or to a partner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Does performance anxiety play a part even if ED is a result of natural ageing? <\/strong>Typically the result of long-term damage to blood vessels, erectile dysfunction makes slow, gradual progress. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">The associated mental distress it brings, on the other hand, can take effect much faster. It can effectively shorten the time from first noticing an erectile problem to complete flaccidness. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>On the upside, this<\/strong> psychologically reinforced side to ED can be helped. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The truth about growing numbers of young men with ED? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The rise of readily accessible internet porn<\/strong> in the past two decades is driving ED problems in younger generations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There\u2019s now a vast amount of literature on the subject. This includes<\/strong>\u00a0Gary Wilson\u2019s insightful book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Your-Brain-Porn-Pornography-Addiction-ebook\/dp\/B00N2AH8NW\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Your Brain on Porn: Internet Pornography and the Emerging Science of Addiction<\/em><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The bottom line is that the brain is overstimulated by excessive porn use<\/strong> (greater than one hour daily) and requires ever greater stimuli to release dopamine and trigger sexual arousal. &#8216;Vanilla&#8217; sex with a partner then no longer does it for the brain, and the penis stays soft. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The good news is that several months of porn abstinence can<\/strong> restore a man\u2019s libido. Of course porn, like any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-myths-about-sex-addiction.htm\">addiction<\/a>, is difficult to just &#8216;cold turkey&#8217;. Support, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\">counselling<\/a>, is suggested.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">What can help if you are struggling with erectile dysfunction? <\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1.Communicate with your partner.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Sit down with your partner and talk frankly about your ED issue, and the associated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/stress-management-counselling-london.htm\">mental stress<\/a> and feelings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shame<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilt<\/a> you may have. Also seek to better understand what your partner considers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sex-life-dead.htm\">fulfilled sex life<\/a>. Most likely, you\u2019ll discover that you have to throw out some of your earlier<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/assumptions-in-relationships.htm\"> assumptions<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. For both partners there are many roads to a fantastic orgasm (even older men with complete erectile dysfunction can still enjoy orgasms). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Broadening your understanding and<\/strong> scope of sex will take away the focus from intercourse, making it more of an optional side show rather than the obligatory end of all sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Apply mindfulness.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Aspect of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindfulness<\/a> have been successfully applied to sexual problems for a long time<\/strong>, well before \u201cmindfulness\u201d was coined as a term. William Masters and Virginia Johnson developed a sex therapy in the 1970s called \u201csensate focus\u201d, where partners are asked to focus on their senses and sensations during sex, rather than thinking about the goal of having an orgasm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Recent research on mindfulness therapy for ED includes a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30297094\/\">2018 pilot study<\/a> at the University of British Columbia, led by Lori Brotto, author of <em>Better Sex Through Mindfulness. <\/em>The study found that mindfulness therapy can help men with situational, psychologically-induced ED. (4) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Mindfulness applied to ED means that calm awareness of the present moment helps\u00a0 block<\/strong> performance anxiety or other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a> creeping in. You\u2019ll learn better accept your sexual state and note details you bypassed before, like how nice your partner smells, the feel of skin, or sensation of touch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><strong>Not sure you want to learn mindfulness alone? Consider CBT therapy<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy<\/a> means cognition (your way of thinking) is used to identify and change negative thoughts, attitudes and behaviours. And there are CBT therapists who specialise in erectile dysfunction.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>CBT can also help you overcome porn addiction<\/strong> (and thereby resolve the accompanying ED issues).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Go to couples counselling together.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Many health professionals helping patients with restoring penile erection favour a holistic approach<\/strong> with patient and partner involved, over just focusing on erectile dysfunction as an isolated issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That said, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulsus.com\/scholarly-articles\/erectile-dysfunction-the-perspectives-of-patients-and-partners-on-counselling.html\">study at Queen&#8217;s university<\/a> in Canada found that less than<\/strong> 10 per cent of clients offered counselling took the opportunity. To their detriment. As the study explains, even if\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"> the ED got better, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/relationship-counselling-london.htm\">serious relationship problems<\/a> remained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;Once the recovery of erectile function takes place, major changes may occur in relationship dynamics. The present study showed that a large percentage of partners were either indifferent or unhappy about future sexual activity. These attitudes of the partners will undoubtedly present new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">conflicts in relationships<\/a> with pre-existing problems.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0A few sessions of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/couples-counselling-london.htm\">couples counselling<\/a> can greatly improve communication skills between partners, teaching them how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\">better listen<\/a> and express themselves.
