It\u2019s there twenty-four seven, be it on a TV in a caf\u00e9 or waiting room, or a phone or tablet\u2019s home screen. This makes it much trickier to shield your child from. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Even if they don\u2019t view news media directly, you child might suffer &#8216;headline anxiety&#8217; if they <\/strong>overhear someone talking about a situation or event, or hear about it from their peers. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Unfortunately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/child-being-bullied.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">some kids love to scare others<\/span><\/a>, usually exaggerating the facts into \u2018playground fake news\u2019, making it even more frightening. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Everyday worries or child anxiety? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A little bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/parental-stress.htm\">stress<\/a> and worry is a very normal part of a child&#8217;s life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Child anxiety is different. It overwhelms your child on a daily basis. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">The <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/children-and-young-adults\/advice-for-parents\/anxiety-disorders-in-children\/\">NHS website<\/a> suggests that worry becomes anxiety if it, &#8220;affects their behaviour and thoughts every day, interfering with their school, home and social life.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Symptoms of anxiety in kids<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Anxiety in children can include such signs as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">difficulty sleeping<\/a> or eating<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li>full of worry and having<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-intrusive-thoughts.htm\"> irrational thoughts<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">can&#8217;t concentrate<\/a>, fidgety<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\">tearfulness<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-issues-signs.htm\">anger<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> episodes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic<\/a> or breathlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li>feeling unwell, having an upset stomach<\/li>\n<li>in younger children, separation anxiety<\/li>\n<li>in older children, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social anxiety<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">using toilet often, bedwetting.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_118014\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5712128487_7e6db436ee-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118014\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5712128487_7e6db436ee-1-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"child anxiety\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5712128487_7e6db436ee-1-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5712128487_7e6db436ee-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dumbledad\/5712128487\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Tim Regan<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If something is going on that you think is \u2018out of character\u2019 for your child\u2019s normal patterns of behaviour,<\/strong> it\u2019s sensible to delve into whether they\u2019re anxious about something, even if they haven\u2019t mentioned it to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to help your anxious child navigate the news<\/h2>\n<p>So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/kids-and-emotions.htm\">how to deal with kids and emotions<\/a> related to the news?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Check what they\u2019ve already seen or heard.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By addressing the news story or event your child might be worried about in an age-appropriate way<\/strong>, you can better manage what they know and deal with any fears and questions. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">The risk otherwise is that your child sits worrying alone, or they go around fearing something that\u2019s based on a misunderstanding from playground fake news.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Keep the chat warm and informal and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-judging-others.htm\">don\u2019t judge<\/a> what they tell you they think of the news story, even if it is wildly incorrect. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Take your child\u2019s fears seriously.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s important not to dismiss or laugh at your child\u2019s concerns and questions.<\/strong> They might seem silly or based on misunderstandings but they probably feel very real to your child.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\"> Listen properly<\/a> and answer carefully.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Provide reassurance and perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For the youngest children, reassurance could be as simple as saying that<\/strong> you\u2019re not worried about the events and will do your best to keep them safe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118012\" style=\"width: 332px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118012\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2929167014_ebc2933cc2-322x400.jpg\" alt=\"anxiety in kids\" width=\"322\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2929167014_ebc2933cc2-322x400.jpg 322w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2929167014_ebc2933cc2.jpg 394w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 322px) 100vw, 322px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-118012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/aeneastudio\/2929167014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">aeneastudio<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For older kids, if the new story is very rare, it can help to explain that this is exactly why it\u2019s made it<\/strong> onto the news. If it happened everywhere and all the time, it wouldn\u2019t be covered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Anxiety in kids because they fear their own safety<\/strong> requires finding an explanation that they can relate to. Explain the measures that are in place to keep them safe. So, if there\u2019s been a story about a major fire, what fire safety equipment have you got at home? If there\u2019s war going on far away, point to where it is on a map to show the distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Play down but don\u2019t completely hide your own anxiety.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/powerlessness-when-world-events-overwhelm.htm\">feeling anxious about the news<\/a> too, remember that your child will probably be looking at your reaction to take cues on how they should feel. Ideally try to keep a lid on your fears for your child\u2019s sake. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">There\u2019s a balance to be had here though, and it&#8217;s around how you handle it.\u00a0 It\u2019s healthy for them to see that you are upset, angry or even a little afraid, followed by how you navigate it in a healthy way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Avoid actively letting younger children watch grown-up news media.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>While your child might well be aware of a news story from outside sources, there\u2019s still<\/strong> no need to let them sit watching the grown-up news if something particularly frightening is going on. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Some news imagery can be just as harmful as violent gaming or films, and most of us wouldn\u2019t let our young children view those. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s best to tune or log in for an update when your child isn\u2019t around. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Children\u2019s news sources, such as First News and Newsround, present stories in an age-appropriate way<\/strong> for primary schoolers, and are ideal for looking at together. Use them as a way to discuss what\u2019s going on afterwards, alleviate any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fears-and-phobias.htm\">fears<\/a> and correct any misunderstandings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Limit how much they\u2019re online as well as what they are seeing.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><span class=\"s2\">An <a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/328371592_Associations_between_screen_time_and_lower_psychological_well-being_among_children_and_adolescents_Evidence_from_a_population-based_study\">American study<\/a> following over forty thousand children aged two to seven concluded that<a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/screen-time-recommendations.htm\"> excessive screen time can add to depression and anxiety in kids<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> in and of itself. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">In 14 to 17 year olds it more than doubled the chance of depression.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So if your child is strugglingwith their mental health at the moment, keep a <\/strong>lid on their logging on. Encourage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing-boosting activities<\/a> together as a family, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-ecopsychology.htm\">walk in nature<\/a>, board games or a bike ride. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And internet security software can help limit what younger children see online.<\/strong> If there are some particularly alarmist news websites you\u2019d rather they didn\u2019t view, you should be able to specifically block access to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Help your child learn to identify reliable news sources.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">As your child gets older, discuss different types of online news sources with them so that they can learn to identify what they can and cannot rely on for reliable, balanced information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Does your child need support to manage their anxiety?
