But it\u2019s only one use of the word dysphoria. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>What is dysphoria, how do you know it\u2019s your issue, and what can help if so? <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is dysphoria? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>To find the meaning of dysphoria, think about euphoria<\/strong> and feeling on top of the world. Dysphoria is its opposite. You feel despondent and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\"> life seems difficult<\/a>. Or look to the Greek root of the word, which means &#8216;hard to bear&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dysphoria\">Wikipedia gives a definition of dysphoria<\/a> as, \u201ca profound state of unease or dissatisfaction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>So dysphoria on its own is a word used in psychology to describe a state<\/strong> <strong>of being<\/strong> that can descend after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\"> a difficult experience.<\/a> This could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">breakup<\/a>, or even something like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\"> drinking<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-use.htm\">drug use<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This state of being, if it continues, can then become a symptom of mental health issues<\/strong> like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\"> depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, dysphoria can form part of a diagnosis<\/strong> or disorder, such as, again, &#8216;gender dysphoria&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What does dysphoria feel like? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Uncomfortable. Dysphoria involves<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> emotional distress<\/a>, which can in turn mean you have physical symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Signs of dysphoria can include:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\">crying<\/a> and low mood <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\">hopelessness <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhaustion<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">poor sleep<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">unable to relax and feel at ease <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-happy-why-is-it-so-hard.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">dissatisfaction <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">upset stomach, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">tension<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Depression, or dysphoria?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">Depression<\/a> is a mental health diagnosis that means you have consistently had low moods for several weeks or months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Dysphoria on its own <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\">can be more short-lived t<\/span><span class=\"s1\">han <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>. And it can have a cause you can pinpoint, like a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\"> loss or bereavement<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed.htm\">Depression<\/a>, on the other hand, can seem to descend out of the blue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118059\" style=\"width: 371px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118059\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118059\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/48684128217_39b5536bd8-361x400.jpg\" alt=\"what is dysphoria\" width=\"361\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/48684128217_39b5536bd8-361x400.jpg 361w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/48684128217_39b5536bd8.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-118059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/66944824@N05\/48684128217\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Ithmus<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Dysphoria and depression could, though, be seen as siblings<\/strong>, with the low moods of dysphoria having the possibility to become depression if they continue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mental health issues and disorders connected to dysphoria <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">What is dysphoria connected to besides depression? <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">Many other issues and disorders have it as symptom, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">anxiety and anxiety disorder<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-dissociative-disorder.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">dissociative disorder <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">borderline personality disorder<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">personality disorders <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">schizophrenia<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">sleep problems<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Types of dysphoria disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Gender dysphoria <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This means you feel uncomfortable and unhappy about your gender or sex. It could be you have a conflict between your physical gender and the gender you identify with. You can feel trapped in the wrong body, or you might just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">feel very anxious<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Postcoital dysphoria<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depressed-after-sex.htm\">feel low and sad after sex<\/a>. This might be because of biological wiring, or it could be caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">child sexual abuse<\/a> . Otherwise it arises from having unwanted or consistently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sex-life-dead.htm\">unsatisfying sex<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Premenstrual dysphoric disorder \u00a0(PMDD)<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-pmdd.htm\">Premenstrual dysphoric disorder<\/a> means that in the lead up to your period you don\u2019t just feel a bit low, you have severe and uncontrollable mood swings that affect your daily coping and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-intensity-relationships.htm\">relationships.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>PMDD was not previously a clinical diagnosis in the UK. but it has recently been<\/strong> included in the World Health Organisation&#8217;s (WHO) diagnostic manual, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-icd-10.htm\"> ICD-11<\/a>. It is also recognised by America&#8217;s diagnostic manual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-dsm.htm\">the DSM-5<\/a> (you can read the DSM-5 criteria for PMDD diagnosis<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279045\/table\/premenstrual-syndrom.table1diag\/\"> here<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Situational dysphoria <\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) talks about situational dysphoria in their &#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/ng134\/chapter\/Recommendations\">Guide to Dealing with Depression in Children and Young People.&#8221;<\/a> They describe it as &#8220;acute sadness and distress that may be encountered in children and young people following recent undesirable events&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The social and environmental factors that cause situational dysphoria include<\/strong> things like homelessness, living in an institutional setting, and refugee status.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Body integrity dysphoria<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/icd.who.int\/browse11\/l-m\/en#\/http:\/\/id.who.int\/icd\/entity\/256572629\">WHO&#8217;s manual the ICD-11 refers to body integrity<\/a> dysphoria as, <span class=\"s1\">&#8220;an intense and persistent desire to become physically disabled in a significant way (e.g., major limb amputee, paraplegic, blind). Or intense feelings of inappropriateness concerning current non-disabled body configuration.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dysphoria vs dysmorphia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If there are two words that are easy to confuse, these two would be it. <\/strong>And gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia might be labels that could both be given to one person, in a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-comorbidity.htm\">comorbid diagnosis<\/a>&#8216;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Gender dysphoria again means you are not comfortable <\/strong>because the sex of your body doesn\u2019t match the gender you feel you are. It\u2019s not seen as a mental disorder, as it doesn&#8217;t cloud your ability to see clearly, but it can contribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118060\" style=\"width: 328px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3150081764_4209d782bc-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118060\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118060\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3150081764_4209d782bc-2-318x400.jpg\" alt=\"what is dysphoria\" width=\"318\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3150081764_4209d782bc-2-318x400.jpg 318w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3150081764_4209d782bc-2.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118060\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/10050473@N08\/3150081764\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Nicki Dobrin<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Body dysmorphia, on the other hand, means you have an unhealthy obsession with the idea that<\/strong> something about your body is flawed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shameful<\/a>. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">It is a mental disorder in that it affects your perception of reality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You might, for example, see a<\/strong> \u2018funhouse mirror\u2019 version of yourself, compared to what you body is really like. A common example here is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-help-someone-with-an-eating-disorder.htm\">anorexic<\/a> person who looks in the mirror and sees someone overweight. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why is dysphoria a big deal? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Again, we can all experience a bit of dysphoria at some point in our lives<\/strong> after a difficult experience like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">breakup<\/a>, long-term <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-illness-and-children.htm\">illness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">accident<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\">bereavement<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s important because it is a red flag we are struggling<\/strong> emotionally and mentally. And it can be a precursor to more difficult to treat issues and disorders. At its most serious, it can mean we are more vulnerable to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\"> suicidal thinking<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What do I do if I think I have dysphoria? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Consider a physical check up first , to rule out any medical issue.<\/strong> Dysphoria can be triggered by things like hypoglycaemia or medications. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Then it\u2019s important to find some support. Do you have a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">trusted friend<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">family member<\/a> to turn to? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If your low mood and feeling of hopelessness continues for more than six weeks<\/strong>, consider seeing your GP or booking with a private counsellor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Suspect your dysphoria is part of a larger issue, such as<\/strong> gender dysphoria?
