Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Tend to feel overwhelmed easily by life? <\/strong>Like things are just beyond you? &#8216;Learned helplessness\u2019 is a behavioural pattern that can be changed. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is learned helplessness? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0Somewhere along the line in childhood, you learned you <\/strong>couldn&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">control<\/a> things around you, and decided to stop trying to help yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The term comes from a series of rather horrible<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ppc.sas.upenn.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/learnedhelplessness.pdf\"> psychological tests led by American psychologist Martin Seligman<\/a> [1] in the 1960s, using electric shocks on dogs. The end conclusion being that if a dog suffered repeatedly, in a way that was beyond it\u2019s control, it would then not take an opportunity to escape suffering if one was presented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Neuroscience later proved it\u2019s not that we<\/strong> \u2018accept\u2019 that we are helpless. Rather it&#8217;s that we actually learn the behaviour of helplessness as an appropriate reaction to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">So learned helplessness means that when we face a stressful situation we can\u2019t control, we have no motivation to change it or take action to deal with it, even when there are things that we could do to help ourselves. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What does learned helplessness look like? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">If you suffer from learned helplessness, difficult situations will see you:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feel overwhelmed<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">struggle to make decisions<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">become totally passive<\/span><\/li>\n<li>or, alternately, lash out with undue aggression<\/li>\n<li>give up easily<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">not ask for help <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">expect the worst<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a> such as thinking you don\u2019t deserve better<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">attribute things on \u2018bad luck\u2019 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\">blame others<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What does helplessness feel like?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Helplessness actually has several possible physical symptoms<\/strong>, as it tends to be related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/trauma-counselling-london.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> and adverse childhood experiences. You might feel:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhausted<\/a> and sleepy <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">foggy headed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">disconnected<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">heavy-limbed<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">unexplained aches and pains<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">like you are catching the flu or a cold.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why is helplessness a real problem? <\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_118216\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6863968882_4122b00a61.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118216\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6863968882_4122b00a61-265x400.jpg\" alt=\"learned helplessness\" width=\"265\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6863968882_4122b00a61-265x400.jpg 265w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6863968882_4122b00a61.jpg 331w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/omgitszo\/6863968882\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Zorah Olivia<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">If we always respond to life challenges with helplessness, it\u2019s going to negatively impact important areas of our lives. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It will make it hard to have<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">healthy relationships<\/a>. You might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dependent-personality-disorder.htm\">overly dependent on others<\/a>, or accept staying in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\">abusive relationship<\/a> because you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leave-unhappy-relationship.htm\">feel helpless to leave<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You will struggle to achieve your potential. Helplessness means we don\u2019t go up for <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">job promotions<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>as it feels \u2018too stressful\u2019. Or we don\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">set big goals<\/a> as we are sure we\u2019d just never achieve them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>All this adds up to constant<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/low-self-esteem-counselling-london.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> and possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health issues<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Helplessness and mental health issues<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Depression is heavily linked to learned helplessness. Seligman felt that this happens when we attribute our problems to ourselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead of realising that some of our problems are down to exterior issues<\/strong> &#8212; the environments we are in, for example, or the choices of others? We decide that we ourselves are incapable, what he called &#8216;personal helplessness&#8217;. Our self-esteem evidently plummets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Learned helplessness is also connected to:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social anxiety<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">stress<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a> (PTSD).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why do I feel helpless all the time?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s the old &#8216;environment and genetics&#8217; mix at play.<\/strong> It comes from experiences that we took negative learnings from, and then to the way our brains work.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Learned helplessness is often connected to <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> and <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)<\/a>. Both decimate a child\u2019s sense of relevance and create feelings of total powerlessness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This does not mean that everyone with a difficult past experiences has <\/strong>learned helplessness. Some of us are naturally more prone to a pessimistic outlook, for example, which makes us more likely to feel helpless. So two siblings who lived through the same difficult domestic situation might grow up with one experiencing helplessness and the other, with an optimistic &#8216;explanatory style&#8217; about life, not as much.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can I ever change?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Learned helplessness doesn\u2019t have to be forever.<\/strong> Both changing your lifestyle habits and seeking support can mean improvements and change for you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18300002\/\">study on animals<\/a> found that the brain changes made by<\/strong> exercise had an affect on feelings of helplessness.[2]<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #808080;\">Rats who ran on wheels were less likely to exhibit learned helplessness, and it wasn&#8217;t related to the amount of exercise but to the very act of exercising at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>No, humans are not rats. But it can&#8217;t hurt <\/strong>to\u00a0integrate physical activity into your weekly routine, particularly with other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">recent research showing that exercise helps depression<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And any kind of positive self-care can increase your sense of being in charge of<\/strong> yourself and your life. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8455871\/\">study published to help nurses<\/a> deal with patients does show that the more we feel helpless, the less likely we are to take care of ourselves. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\">goal-setting system like SMART,<\/a>\u00a0 for example, can help you learn to break down goals into simple steps you can actually achieve.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Learned-Helplessness%3A-The-Effect-of-Failure-on-Test-Firmin-Hwang\/6fdf19f2b84b3a8b3524902cada968596e53aaf6?p2df\">2004 study on American students<\/a> and test-taking found that those who started with easy questions first did better. If students were presented with difficult questions off the bat, they were more likely to experience helplessness and then not even get easy questions right later. [3]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can therapy change my pattern of helplessness?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Finally, do consider seeking support.<\/strong> Remember, asking for help is harder for those with the trait of helplessness.
