There\u2019s no escaping the fact that our kids are going to hear a lot about Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p><em>How can you talk about corona virus with your children? And manage\u00a0any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">fears<\/a> and misconceptions they might have?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Coronavirus and children &#8211; having the chat<\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1.Work out what they already know.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>You might wish you could shelter your child from the worries of the world, but that\u2019s really not possible past the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-in-pregnancy-care-info.htm\">baby<\/a>\u00a0and toddler stage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can switch off the news when they\u2019re around at home, but<\/strong> they\u2019ll hear about this at nursery or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/student-stress-what-is-it.htm\">school<\/a> \u2013 it\u2019s such a big story and talking point that it is inevitable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even if your child hasn\u2019t mentioned Coronavirus yet, you\u2019re still better off raising the subject<\/strong> with them, pro-actively managing what they know and supporting them in how they feel about it.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Check for misinformation.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Primary school playgrounds have long been a breeding ground for alarming scare stories.<\/strong> Sometimes these are truly believed by the narrator, others are purposefully made up to terrify other children.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Talk together about what your son or daughter has heard about the virus and its impact and gently correct any misinformation.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Older children and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teen-mental-health-get-help.htm\">teens<\/a> will be seeing Covid-19 stories on <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">social media<\/a> and online news, not all of which will be accurate. This is a good opportunity to teach or remind them about sticking to reputable news media or sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/coronavirus-covid-19\/\">the NHS coronavirus pages<\/a>, and not necessarily believing everything they see online.<\/p>\n<p><em>First News and BBC Newsround are reliable news sources when it comes to coronavirus and children. They present stories in a way that\u2019s both accessible and balanced for kids and preteens.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Identify specific worries.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-118342\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/cdc-20YP7NENJzk-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"coronavirus and children\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/cdc-20YP7NENJzk-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/cdc-20YP7NENJzk-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/cdc-20YP7NENJzk-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/cdc-20YP7NENJzk-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Ask your child what they are worried about and <\/strong>help them to articulate it if they don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Although do be led by them, so that you are not suggesting problems that they might not have considered.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Children don\u2019t always have concerns about the same things we adults do.<\/strong> Keep their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\"> trust<\/a> by taking their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worries<\/a> seriously and addressing them, whatever they are, and no matter how trivial or even silly they might seem to grown-up ears.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It could be they are more worried about missing out on things<\/strong> they were looking forward to than the illness, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/birthday-blues-milestones-affect-mental-health.htm\">birthday<\/a> party or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-get-along-with-your-family.htm\">holiday<\/a> being cancelled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To address your child&#8217;s worries about<\/strong> Coronavirus and children in schools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19\/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19\">read the government&#8217;s advice here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Provide realistic reassurance.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>When it comes to the disease itself, it seems that children are the least affected.<\/strong> Some children who have been infected appear to not even get any symptoms. Reassure them that you have medicines in the house that they could take and that they will be well looked after, even if they do get Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Should your child suffer from a health condition that might make them more at risk, talk them through whatever<\/strong> advice and action plan you have in mind, such as starting to limit social contact if there are lots of cases in your community. Remember though that so far not a single child under 10 has died of Covid-19, and the number of fatalities for 10 to 19 year-olds is minuscule.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your child might however still worry about the potential impact for older relatives or someone they know with <\/strong>an underlying health issue. Be honest about that \u2013 perhaps explain what steps the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friend<\/a> or relative concerned might take to help protect themselves, if needed, such as staying at home more.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Tempting though it is, don\u2019t lie and promise that people will definitely be okay. Reassure them that whatever does happen, you\u2019ll help them through and tackle it together.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>When it comes to potential disruption to daily life, such as school closures, highlight what will<\/strong> stay the same and any upsides you can think of. Create an action plan.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Including your child in a plan of action can<\/strong> help them feel less <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learned-helplessness.htm\">helpless<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s best to focus your child\u2019s attention on things they can control rather than those they cannot, such as<\/strong> effective hand washing. You could have a trial run of more thorough hand washing techniques together and perhaps invent your own fun song of around 20 seconds as an alternative to the prevailing \u2018sing happy birthday twice through\u2019 advice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depending on their age, provide them wit<\/strong>h a hand sanitiser for their school bag and advise them to try to avoid touching their mouth, nose or eyes when possible if they haven\u2019t cleaned their hands first.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond this, you could involve your child in planning a list of foods you could get in in case you<\/strong> need to isolate at home, or fun ideas for activities you could do, from board games or a family book club, to a film and popcorn afternoon.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Keep talking.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>This is an evolving situation and your child\u2019s questions and concerns might change in the coming days or weeks.<\/strong> Check in now and again about their worries and views, but try not to let it take over conversations too much. A sense of normalcy is necessary in challenging times.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Be a united front.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>If you are calm and explaining things in one way and your spouse or partner in another,<\/strong> it can create more confusion for your children, not less.
